Mary J. Blige in Talks to Star in ROCK OF AGES

     November 29, 2010

R&B singer Mary J. Blige is in talks to star in the screen adaptation of the hit Broadway musical Rock of Ages.  Adam Shankman (Hairspray) will direct and choreograph the film, which takes place in 1987 on the Sunset Strip: “a small town girl met a big city rocker and in LA’s most famous rock club, they fell in love to the greatest songs of the 80s.”  In case you were wondering, the greatest songs of the 1980s were recorded by the likes of Journey, Night Ranger, Styx, and Poison.

Talks with Tom Cruise to join the cast are ongoing.  Hit the jump for the official synopsis of the musical, and a bit of info on which roles Blige and Cruise will play.

In 1987 on the Sunset Strip, a small town girl met a big city rocker and in LA’s most famous rock club, they fell in love to the greatest songs of the 80s. It’s ROCK OF AGES, an arena-rock love story told through the mind-blowing, face-melting hits of JOURNEY, NIGHT RANGER, STYX, REO SPEEDWAGON, PAT BENATAR, TWISTED SISTER, POISON, ASIA, WHITESNAKE and many more.

According to Vulture, Blige is in line to play Justice Charlier, “the owner of the Sunset Strip’s exotic dance venue the Venus Club.”  Cruise was initially in talks for the role of Bourbon Room owner Dennis Dupree, but is reportedly now drawn to the villainy of rock singer Stacee Jaxx.  Pictured, right, with MiG Ayesa’s face.  (Pictured, in my head, with Tom Cruise’s face.  Glorious.)

Following a handful of TV guest spots, Blige featured in the 2009 Tyler Perry film I Can Do Bad All by Myself.  The Grammy winner was recently tapped to headline the Nina Simone biopic Nina.

You must be joking, right? Now way would Cruise make a great Stacee Jaxx, no matter how popular he is. I have seen the tour several times, and no one could ever be a better Stacee Jaxx than MiG Ayesa, who can act “way better” than Cruise could ever sing and dance! Please stop casting movies solely on previous “box office draw” and start casting on the talent needed to make the movie the best it can be. I do agree that Mary J. would make a great Justice, as would Queen Latifah! Those gals can sing a song an cop an attitude!

Toni I couldn’t agree with you more!

As much as I LOVE Cruise as an ACTOR he will not pull off Stacee Jaxx! Please – please do the role justice and check out the ROA road tour cast – Ayesa is the perfect performer for the role – he belts out a song like no one I know, is a consumate actor and can dance up a storm! He’s got the look and the attitude this role requires!

Taking on Jaxx and doing half a job could certainly backfire on Cruise’s career and negatively affect the success of this movie! Cruise would NOT be a box office draw for me on this one – Brosnan was a train wreck in Mama Mia – I’d expect the same for Cruise here. I’ll bet it would cost tons less to get these really talented folks who already do the show every night on board and you’d have a better finished product.
