A new, official trailer for Mary Magdalene has landed online as the long-delayed film is finally poised to hit U.S. theaters next month. Directed by Lion helmer Garth Davis, the film stars Rooney Mara as the titular Biblical figure opposite Joaquin Phoenix’s Jesus, as it aims to take a closer look at Mary’s involvement with and inclusion in Jesus’ group of followers.

The movie was shot back in 2016 and was initially poised to be released last March, but the downfall of The Weinstein Company put its future in jeopardy. The film still opened in some international territories, but it lay dormant until IFC Films recently picked up domestic rights and agreed to release it in U.S. theaters at long last.

This is a really powerful trailer, and I love the idea of taking a closer look at who Mary Magdalene was and how she fit into Jesus’ story. On a pure craft level, the film is noteworthy too. Rogue One and Vice cinematographer Greig Fraser—who’s currently lensing Dune—shot the film, and its score marks the final completed piece by the late, great composer Johann Johannsson.

Check out the new Mary Magdalene trailer below, followed by a poster. The film also stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Tahar Rahim, and Ryan Corr. Mary Magdalene opens in U.S. theaters on April 12th.
