Just a few minutes ago I attended a press conference for Warner Bros. “The Informant!” here in Toronto. After the press conference ended, I managed to ask Matt Damon some questions about the possibility of a 4th “Bourne” movie. Since he’s been giving the same answer for the last few weeks about needing to find the right story to justify making the film, I wanted to know if he’d actually read any of the drafts that the studio has been developing and what he thought. According to Matt, he hasn’t. But that’s not the big news, as Matt told me in a few weeks he’ll be meeting up with director Paul Greengrass in New York City to finally discuss making the 4th movie! More after the jump:
According to Matt, Paul has been working non-stop for 6 years and he’s currently taking a much needed vacation. But once the vacation ends, he’s meeting Matt in NYC to actually talk about making the film!
While I can’t confirm what I’m about to say, I’ve heard Matt has an opening in his schedule in 2010 to make the 4th “Bourne” movie if it comes together. With the amount of interest from the fans and the studio, I’d really be shocked if this doesn’t happen. But with a meeting in a few weeks, I’d imagine we’ll start to hear more about this very soon. Here’s what Matt said after the press conference ended:
Collider: Everyone always asks about the Bourne franchise and you’ve been giving the same answer that it’s all about the story – which by the way, all the fans of the franchise are loving that answer – but all of us are wondering how likely is it that you guys are going to do another film?
Matt: Look, it’s a question I get a lot from people on the street and I was talking to Paul (Greengrass) and he gets the question a lot too, and he said, “that’s the signal that we really should do another one. People want it.” Also, we love the character and we would love to do another one. For us, that means reuniting with all of our friends who made the other movies and going on another round the world adventure again. So, personally, selfishly, we’d all really like to do it, but we are really serious about trying to get the story and the script right because the only thing more disappointing than not having another one of these movies is, for us or for movie fans is would be to make one that isn’t good. Because everyone would say, “they should have quit after three”. And we’d feel that way too.
Collider: Well I know Universal has had people writing scripts. Have you actually read the drafts that have been coming in?
Matt: Not yet. Paul finished cutting “The Green Zone” except for some effects. It’s coming out in March. He hasn’t had a break literally since he did “The Bourne Supremacy” – which is six years ago now. So he was like I need to take a break…so he’s been on vacation for about three weeks and he’s going to take a few more and then he said he’d come to New York and we’d sit down and we’d talk seriously about it.

Damon is the shit. Smart guy, knows what he is doing – master of his domain. How confident do you have to be to drop out of Harvard to make a movie and win an Oscar? The fact that he never got the proper recognition he deserved for his work in The Departed is truly lame – his performance was better than DiCaprio’s. Bourne is one of the best franchises ever (without Bourne, Casino Royale would never have happened) and I’m really glad that it is in the hands of Greengrass and Damon. The chase scene where Bourne tracks down Desh across the rooftops will be studied and talked about and followed forever.

I love the Bourne franchise (best franchise of the decade, without a doubt), will watch anything Greengrass does, and Damon is one the best actors working today. That said, they really should leave the character where he is. Why is it that when a great movie comes out, people another one just like it? Making a second and third film made sense; there was clearly a story to tell. But that story’s been told now. Tell new stories.
Obviously there have been great sequels that were in no way necessary when viewed through the prism of the original film (The Godfather, Part II for example), but I guess I find it a little disconcerting that so much emphasis is placed on the next Bourne film, rather than simply being excited about the next Paul Greengrass movie (I, for one, am really looking forward to The Green Zone; as great as Supremacy and Ultimatum are, they don’t hold a candle to United 93).
But it’s a larger issue, too. People, even supposed film people, are way more excited about the next Batman film than Inception, Scorsese doing Sinatra than Scorsese doing Silence, Del Toro doing The Hobbit than…really, any of the thousands of original ideas he has. It’s all about latching onto something familiar than something new.

Matt said in an interview at Access Hollywood that they’re looking at “shooting in 18 months or so”. He’s not planning to make it in 2010.

I love the original movie, but I think the sequels are way overrated.(Oooh! shaky cam, so gritty!) If they don’t get a new director Bourne 4 is a rental at best for me.

I’m guessing Bourne 4 will be made. So often, scripts become lame after great success – not tight enough, not human enough. They become grandiose. The storytellers become preoccupied with huge action sequences. In Star Wars III, Darth Sidius’ face became too grotesque, losing the menace of the earlier films. For all Paul Greengrass’ talents, I preferred Doug Liman’s simpler method of telling a story. The tension was in the story, not the cinematography. That’s where it should be. The charm of Bourne is that he’s only just beyond human. Keep that gap small.

As long as good story is developed then I think Bourne 4 will be a success. I had the same concerns about Bourne 3 and was very excited by the result. Matt Damon has always said he would only continue with the series if the story worked was good and worked for him. I'm hoping they do come up with a great story because a good action movie is hard to find.

i like the Bourne movies but what would the fourth be about. The story kind of ended when he found out about every thing. I hope they do come out with another but i also hope its not another cheesy action movie That would ruin The Bourne
I LOVE those movies, of them. I think I would have died if Jason (or david, whatever) actually died in Bourne Ultimatum. I want another one to come out. And it can be all car chases and fights cuz i literlly don’t care. Most action movies are cheesy but those ones were outstanding. When we first rented them in the two days we had them i had watched Bourne Identity 3 times Bourne Supremity 4 and Bourne Ultimatum 3 times also. I kept talking about it in school and everyone thought i was wierd because apparently no girl would ever watch those movies, but guess what, I did and I loved them. So make another one, please!!!!

There has to be a 4th movie, Niki Parsons and Pam Landy will be a star in it and I am sure it will be action packed, I heard South America was one stopping point for the movie–yes, get it right and by all means take what ever time needs to be taken, but you have to do a 4th movie–it will make 100′s of millions, in fact, it make break every record–so that is incentive, but I do know Damon would not want to make something and have it flop… and keep politics put completely. Just go for it and screw the political correctness crap..Too much of that in Hollywood and people really do not like it…
