A new Doctor is coming.  The BBC announced today that Matt Smith is poised to vacate his role as the Doctor on the wildly popular TV series Doctor Who later this year.  The actor will appear in the 50th Anniversary special in November, and his final appearance as the Doctor will come with the show’s Christmas special, in which the Doctor will regenerate.  Smith was the 11th actor to inhabit the role on the long-running show, making his first appearance as the Doctor in the 2010 New Year’s Day special.  No specific reason is given for Smith’s departure, but all appears to be amicable.  The actor recently started branching out a bit with his acting career, as he’ll be seen on the big screen in Ryan Gosling’s directorial debut How to Catch a Monster.

Hit the jump to read a lengthy statement from Smith as well as a statement from Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat.  The search for the 12th Doctor will begin imminently, so brace yourselves Who fans.

“Doctor Who has been the most brilliant experience for me as an actor and a bloke, and that largely is down to the cast, crew and fans of the show. I’m incredibly grateful to all the cast and crew who work tirelessly every day, to realise all the elements of the show and deliver Doctor Who to the audience. Many of them have become good friends and I’m incredibly proud of what we have achieved over the last four years.

Having Steven Moffat as show runner write such varied, funny, mind bending and brilliant scripts has been one of the greatest and most rewarding challenges of my career. It’s been a privilege and a treat to work with Steven, he’s a good friend and will continue to shape a brilliant world for the Doctor.

The fans of Doctor Who around the world are unlike any other; they dress up, shout louder, know more about the history of the show (and speculate more about the future of the show) in a way that I’ve never seen before, your dedication is truly remarkable. Thank you so very much for supporting my incarnation of the Time Lord, number Eleven, who I might add is not done yet, I’m back for the 50th anniversary and the Christmas special!

It’s been an honour to play this part, to follow the legacy of brilliant actors, and helm the TARDIS for a spell with ‘the ginger, the nose and the impossible one’. But when ya gotta go, ya gotta go and Trenzalore calls. Thank you guys. Matt.”

“Every day, on every episode, in every set of rushes, Matt Smith surprised me: the way he’d turn a line, or spin on his heels, or make something funny, or out of nowhere make me cry, I just never knew what was coming next. The Doctor can be clown and hero, often at the same time, and Matt rose to both challenges magnificently. And even better than that, given the pressures of this extraordinary show, he is one of the nicest and hardest-working people I have ever had the privilege of knowing. Whatever we threw at him – sometimes literally – his behaviour was always worthy of the Doctor.

But great actors always know when it’s time for the curtain call, so this Christmas prepare for your hearts to break, as we say goodbye to number Eleven. Thank you Matt – bow ties were never cooler.

Of course, this isn’t the end of the story, because now the search begins. Somewhere out there right now – all unknowing, just going about their business – is someone who’s about to become the Doctor. A life is going to change, and Doctor Who will be born all over again! After 50 years, that’s still so exciting!”

Such a brilliant, brilliant Doctor, but sadly so few good stories due to the frequently ineffective writing that the series seems to hold in such high regard.

Totally agree, such a shame that the horribly messed around with 7th series will be his last. Wish he was sticking around for another. Gutted to hear that he’s going, I loved the enthusiastic way he threw himself into the role. Really liked him in this season’s finale, especially in the scene where he went from playing hide and seek to tearing up at the news from Clara. But yeah except for a few bright spots he really hasn’t been served well in the script department this season. Even the Gaiman ep was ropey, which was gutting after The Doctors Wife.

Matt also strikes me as the most “alen” of the doctors since Tom Baker. He was a real find for the role, hope they can do the same with 12.

Disappointed to see him go, but when Karen was rumoured to be off to Hollywood you had to fancy he wouldnt be far behind. Fancy he might make a rather excellent Mr Fantastic. Moffett was gushing about him and quite rightly so, he’s kept him in a job.

Benedict Cumberbatch as the next Doctor

    • james

star wars remakes by jj, star trek remakes, doctor who remakes, all pathetic, star wars will be bad.

      • james

doctor who? pathetic fans of the remake can not see that the actual official doctor who from 1963-1996 is so much better than the remake shit.

      • Jason

It’s not a remake. It’s a continuation. The theatrical movies with Peter Cushing were remakes. There haven’t been Star Wars remakes; there have been sequels and prequels and television shows. And Star Trek (XI) & Star Trek Into Darkness (XII), while set in an alternate timeline are in continuity with all previous Treks in that the new universe’s elderly Spock is from the original universe.
