While Matthew McConaughey talked about his recent work – including turns in Dallas Buyers Club, HBO’s True Detective, and Mud among others – he briefly commented on a highly anticipated upcoming film: Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar.  Not only did he call the sci-fi film “the most ambitious thing he’s ever done”, McConaughey also talked about meeting Nolan at his house for what turned out to be his role in Interstellar.  Hit the jump to see what he had to say.

matthew-mcconaughey-interstellarBe sure to check out Variety’s full interview with McConaughey, who is currently experiencing an incredible run of performances.  Here’s what he had to say about Nolan’s Interstellar:

“Here’s what I can tell you, It’s the most ambitious thing he’s ever done. And he’s done some ambitious stuff. … There’s no fucking around on set. He’s a great problem solver. In that way, he’s very indie. Here’s a guy who could have whatever budget he wants — and we finished shooting early.”

The audition process was not exactly by-the-book, but it ended with McConaughey being offered the role:

“He came up to me and said, ‘“Mud.” I love that movie.’ I sat down with him for about 2½ hours at his house. Not one word came up about “Interstellar.” I walked out not sure what to think. I mean, he’s not a guy who takes general meetings.”

Nolan himself also commented on McConaughey’s work ethic:

“Matthew works from the inside out. He approaches a character from a deep human understanding, refusing to take shortcuts to an emotional connection with the audience — all while never losing sight of the demands of the overall narrative.”

Interstellar also stars Anne HathawayJessica ChastainCasey AffleckMichael Caine, David OyelowoWes BentleyJohn LithgowEllen BurstynTopher GraceDavid GyasiMackenzie FoyBill IrwinTimothée Chalamet, and Matt Damon and opens November 7, 2014.

  • Chris Nolan is a Money Whore

Chris Nolan: “McConaughy is a gentlman, he is. I only had to give him a rim job thrice to get him to say that, I did. I know my last movie was utter shit, squires, but trust me when I say bob’s your uncle this one will be an even bigger pile of horse shit, it will.”

    • Guest

shut the hell up. DKR was not shit. flawed, yes. not shit. Nolan arguably has the best track record of any director of the last decade and i’m sure Interstellar will just be another masterpiece to be added to that list.

      • dawko

We can very easily compare him to David Fincher…most of his movies are phenomenal, his Aliens is something like Nolan’s TDKR, a good movie with flaws. Other than that, brilliant director.

      • Mixed Race rich kid NYC

        Hey dumbass
David fincher didn’t direct “aliens” he directed alien3
But hey you’re a Nolan groupie so what do you know about movies

God this is cute; Fincher and Nolan fans bickering? Pull up your big boy pants and watch some Steve McQueen or the Coens. Fucking plebs…

Considering you are dropping names like a first year film student, I’m not so sure you’re numbers are any better.

      • nintendo zapper

hahaha “you’re”. “Your”. Kieślowski. Jodorowski There. That helps.

Style over substance. David Fincher and Chris Nolan are two of the most overrated directors in the history of film.

        Fight Club was great…
And Fight Club was really, really great. And… Ummm… Well… Gotta love Fight Club. Classic flick! As as far as 3-hour plotless/heartless FX test reels go, you can’t beat Benjamin Button. And Zodiac is wonderfully acted/edited/shot.

And just like Nolan, he can cast a flick and hire a mean director of cinematography.

I’ll be first in line for anything from Morten Tyldum, I’ll take Wes Anderson’s scraps off the cutting room floor and am much more excited about the future of directors like Gareth Evans, Denis Villeneuve or Cary Fukunaga than the predictable and pretentious products pumped out from Nolan/Fincher.

Can’t say there are many more directors that make me sad about film than those two.

Maybe when it’s all said and done, Chris Nolan will admit he’s been making parodies of big budget yet “arty” pop films. On that day I will forgive him for his ridiculous crimes and buy him a more comfortable, less pretentious wardrobe.

      • Kori

Wow. You really have no idea what a director does, let alone Fincher, if you think he simply casts his movies and hires a good DP.

        Wow.

      • BigJimSlade

“Nolan arguably has the best track record of any director of the last decade”

Can’t say I can think of a more overrated director over the last decade. The exposition heavy dream movie with a bunch of explosions and anonymous dream soldiers may have been one of the most ridiculously pointless mess of a movie I’ve ever seen. And it’s a masterpiece compared to that abortion of a Batman parody (the one with Batman hanging out with a chiropractor in a ditch. Riveting stuff!)

Is there a difference between Michael Bay and Chris Nolan? Well, Bay has some heart and can tell actually tell a story.

      • The Flobbit

If you thought Inception was a ridiculously pointless mess, I urge you to watch the Pirates of the Carribbean sequels. Or the Transformer sequels. Or Grown Ups 2. Or—

      • Nintendo Zapper

Just name one Bay movie with heart.

  • axalon

Man, I wonder what it’d be like to shoot the shit with someone like Nolan.

So glad to see what McConaughey’s done with his career lately.

  • Sawyer

    Stellar cast!

    • Jamesy

Some might say it’s an Inter…stella cast (puts on shades) sorry had to be done.

      • axalon

        “sorry had to be done.”

Why do you guys always apologize? You should own it, we were all thinking it.

      • Jamesy

A bad ass has to be charming, me lady.

      • axalon

But a lady always likes a confidant man

  • NICK НΛRT

cant wait for this. hope we get a new trailer sooner rather than later

  • Mixed Race rich kid NYC

This is the most ambitious film ever done according to Nolan
    This guy is an hack
Inception was one of the dumbest movie I’ve ever sat through
    A pretentious mess
I’m the idiot for still going to see the dark knight rises, one of the worst movie I’ve ever seen!!!!!
The only movies I like from him are the dark knight (somewhat) , batman begins and memento
Yes his magician movie was shit too

    • Greg Mauer

      And so are you LOSER!

    • Matt1

      TROOOOOOOOOLL!!!

    • rundmc1981

This is a good character. Keep it up. Love the air of pretentiousness though Colbert is already doing it. Nice touch with the NYU avatar. You’re going to need to cash in to pay back those student loans, so save the schtick for the comedy bars in the Village. You’ll need all the fresh material you can get for that $200K.

      • Mixed Race rich kid NYC

It’s all out of pocket expense
        No debt over here

      • rundmc1981

You disappoint me. Never break character.

    • http://nasirjones.com NaS

The Dark Knight Rises and Inception were awful, I agree wholeheartedly.

    • Mixed Race rich kid NYC’s Dr.

I’m sorry sir. The test results are back. You have Troll-Cancer.

      • Marissa Evans

Hey man, we all have our own opinions. I’ve hated Oscar Best Picture winners and enjoyed critical bombs, as I’m sure we all have. Granted to say the movie’s shit as opposed to just not liking it is silly, but still it’s their thoughts, not fact.
That said I do love ‘Inception’, pretentiousness and all. ;) ‘Dark Knight Rises’ I have no opinion on, it was fine but long – mostly zoned out and enjoyed the spectacle.

      • Nathan

Yeah, but its how we express those opinions that separates the Humans from the Trolls.

    • mixedkidmonkey

      OOOOO OOOOOOO AAAAAAHHHHHH AHHHHHHHH

shut your mouth you damn dirty ape.

    • Raptor Jesus

I’m sorry to say but you’re pretty much right across the board here.

    • pickledialects

      Awww, someone needs a hug.

    • doc

If Nolan is a hack, what directors are not hacks in your opinion?

      • The Flobbit

        Do NOT encourage him!

  • Redjester

This might just be my most anticipated movie of the year. Never has a teaser trailer so vague and sparse peaked my interest as much as this one has.

  • Marissa Evans

I was never a chick-flick girl, but admittedly McConaughey was one of those guys that just stuck with me. Good-looking man, above-average actor even in the shittiest of rom-coms, and seemed like a likeable guy whenever he came on talk shows.
So glad to see his career take a totally different direction than what I was used to. :)

  • The Flobbit

And this is from the guy who did Contact! If Interstellar is half the film that Contact was (and it looks like it could be a whole lot more), it will be nothing short of brilliant.

  • Bloost

If he saw Mud, did he cringe at Witherspoon’s acting?

    • rundmc1981

I’d like to think he knew that the only reason she was casted was for to help finance it to international markets. The extra millions she brought to the table in financing is worth the 15 minutes of screen time so I can go for a bathroom break. And yes, she is definitely cringeworthy. But still not as bad as the death scene from Oscar-award winner Marion Cotillard in Nolan’s own, Dark Knight Rises. That was a scene straight outta The Room.

      • Bloost

Her crying scene garnered laughter in the theater I was in! Why is she still getting roles? She’s not a good actress, despite that undeserved Oscar win.

      • The Flobbit

Marion Cotillard is an amazing, beautiful actress. Shall I refer you to some good roles?

      • Bloost

        I’m talking about Witherspoon.

      • The Flobbit

Oh, thank goodness. Yeah, Witherspoon is terrible.

      • rundmc1981

Absolutely loved her in “Rust & Bone”. Still one of my favorites.

      • rundmc1981

I gotta say, Witherspoon was June Carter. Sometimes actresses, even mediocre ones, have a role that was meant for them. I couldn’t see anyone else playing June Carter Cash in “Walk the Line”. That being said, everything else she does on a regular basis doesn’t hold a candle to that part.

    • GrimReaper07

What about Witherspoon in that movie? I didn’t feel she stood out in any wrong way or that overdid her part.

  • Jack le Critic

McConaughey is inevitably going to be cast in a superhero movie – he’d make a good Daredevil or Silver Surfer…any other’s come to mind?

    • GrimReaper07

I’d rather he worked on something more interesting. The superhero genre is getting too overcrowded and stale

NYU rich kid didn’t go to NYU. Don’t fool yourself. He’s a troll blow-hole with a strange obsession towards indie films and a crippling hate of all things Nolan. Nobody from NYU can be that pretentious, even a self-labeled “film critic.”

    • rundmc1981

Believe me, they can be. Remember, the school begot M. Night Shymalan from its loins.
