Eddie Redmayne just scored his first Academy Award nod and win, but his The Danish Girl co-star Matthias Schoenaerts predicts that he’s already got another one on the way. While talking to Schoenaerts for his upcoming release, Far from the Madding Crowd, he took a moment to talk about The Danish Girl, which stars Redmayne as Lili Elbe, one of the first people to undergo sex reassignment surgery. Here’s what Schoenaerts had to say when asked about the Oscar buzz that was recently amplified when the film scored a November 27th limited release date:
“We just wrapped it exactly a week ago. Yeah, we were in Norway in a beautiful place on top of a mountain with a crazy panoramic view. I don’t want to jinx it, but I can honestly say I’m pretty sure that Eddie Redmayne is gonna get his second Oscar nom, if not just the second Oscar period.”
The Tom Hooper-directed film is based on the David Ebershoff novel of the same name. It’ll focus on Elbe’s relationship with her wife, Greta (Alicia Vikander), covering how Greta became well known for her paintings of her husband dressed as a woman and how the transformation effected their relationship.
Obviously it’s tough to judge a film’s Oscar potential when you haven’t seen a single frame of footage, but, as Adam recently pointed out in Oscar Beat, The Danish Girl checks off quite a few boxes - an Oscar winning director, an Oscar winning lead actor, a timely premise and a true story. We'll see if that formula pays off in the fall.
