Fresh off of winning the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar for The Descendants, writers Nat Faxon and Jim Rash (who plays the dean on NBC’s Community) have just begun production on their directorial debut.  Based off their original screenplay, The Way, Way Back centers on a teenage boy on summer vacation (Liam James) who strikes up an unlikely friendship with a local water-park manager (Sam Rockwell) while coming to grips with some family issues.  The impressive cast includes Steve Carell, Toni Collette, Allison Janney and Annasophia Robb, and now it appears that Maya Rudolph, Rob Corddry, and Amanda Peet are signing on as well.  Hit the jump for more.Deadline has the news of the addition of Rudolph, Corddry, and Peet, though their report doesn’t specify what roles they’ll be taking on.  No matter, the trio have proven comedic and dramatic chops and their involvement ensures that this will be  one hell of a directorial debut for Faxon and Rash.  The two are alums of the famed improv group The Groundlings and recently sold an action-comedy script starring Kristen Wiig.  They’re executive producing The Way, Way Back and they’re also working on a second feature for The Descendants team of Alexander Payne, Jim Burke, and Jim Taylor. All of this as Rash prepares to head back to the Community set.Though the duo are no slouches when it comes to comedy, The Way, Way Back seems more along the lines of a comedic drama a la The Descendants which is in no way a bad thing.  I’m eager to see the full film once its released, but this top notch cast is incredibly promising.
