A big chunk of the future of home entertainment seems to involve video-on-demand. More and more releases are branching out to the VOD market, offering new movies in the comfort of one’s own home months ahead of their theatrical release. It’s not a terrible model, and given the text-heavy state of theatrical moviegoing across the country, it’s hard to blame people for wanting to watch a film in peace and quiet. Mel Gibson’s Icon Productions is making a ballsy move with the actor’s next feature, Get the Gringo (previously titled How I Spent My Summer Vacation), as the film is set to be released directly to the VOD format. The actioner is skipping the theatrical release altogether, and a Blu-ray/DVD release will follow the VOD window. Hit the jump for more details. [Update: We've updated the article with the first trailer for the film]
Video On Demand (VOD) is a recent (just a few years) topic in the movie industry so everybody has their own opinion on how the system should work from now on but the only thing we ask is that no matter the release of a film (Theatrical, VOD, DVD/Bluray, Web) they must deliver quality projects.
Definitely reminds me of Payback – the inflection of his voice is just like when he was doing Porter. One of my favorites that I can watch over and over. Looking forward to seeing this.
No ranting from me. I like Gibson and I like his work. Who knows, it could turn out to be a shrewd move on his part. He does have a way of thinking outside the box.
And let the inevitable mel ranting why its going to video on demand begin.
looks like Raystream is partnering with the big boys

This looks so much better then Edge of Darkness, he was great in The Beaver and This just looks fun.
It kind of has the vibe of Payback….One of my all time favorite movie.

FREEEEDDDDOOOOMMMMMMM!!!
Mel Gibson is a very talented Director/Actor. I love his work. He shares a lot with Clint Eastwood, another amazing Director/actor.
Looks great, I’m in
This is not fair to Gibson, whether he made a mistake or not, his art deserves to be seen by more people. Bring his work back to theaters!
Damn, this deserves at least a limited theatrical release, this is not your typical Dolph Lundgren, Steven Seagal Direct to DVD shite.
RAYSTREAM IS GOING BIG!
