Well, this is your “holy shit” news item for the week. Mel “Sugar Tits” Gibson is teaming up with Showgirls scribe Joe Eszterhas on an untitled drama that will tell the story of Jewish warrior Judah Maccabee. Yes, really. Deadline reports that Warner Bros. has set Eszterhas to write the script, and Gibson will be collaborating with him. The Passion of the Christ director will definitely be producing the film, and has the first option to direct if he so chooses.

Maccabee is one of the greatest Jewish warriors in history, as he led a revolt against the Seleucid Empire around 167 BCE in Judea. Gibson recently starred in Jodie Foster’s well-received The Beaver, but the film was still overshadowed by the actor’s personal woes. After being absent from Hollywood for a number of years, Eszterhas is set to return with the sexual thriller Lust. The screenwriter of Basic Instinct and Flashdance wouldn’t be my first choice for a Jewish epic, but this just became the most interesting project currently being developed.

  1. Well, surprised by this in a way, but I suppose this may count as an apology to Jews. Never met a Jew so dunno wether theyld dig it.

Anyways, I will watch anything Mel Gibson makes, he sure is one hell of a director! And when Mel does historical Epic he does not dissapoint!

Hopefully after he has done this, and is accepted again in Hollywood he will return to his shelved VIKING movie. I was sooo looking forward to that till he got drunk and Di Caprio walked away from it.

Bring back Mel Gibson and the historical epic!!!!

  2. ALRIGHT! I’ve been waiting seven years for this news, when Mel was promoting ‘The Passion…’ in 2004, he mentioned the Maccabees story and that he’d love to do it someday- “it’s like a Western” I believe was his exact quote- and it would be simply awesome if he finally did it… but he’s got to direct it too, Mel is genuinely one of the finest directors in the industry, and this would be a truly inspiring piece of work… GO MEL GO!!!

  3. YES!! Mel, on track!! Making films like only he knows… Joe Eszterhas seems like an odd choice, but then again, Basic Instinct was mad fun (minus the last bit of the film). Good news indeed…
