The Internet has been abuzz this past week about a possible Mel Gibson cameo (as a tattoo artist) in the now filming Hangover 2.  Now Warner Brothers and Legendary Pictures have issued a statement that the beleaguered actor “will not be making a cameo appearance in “The Hangover Part II.” Director Todd Philips chimed in with the following: “I thought Mel would have been great in the movie and I had the full backing of Jeff Robinov and his team. But I realize filmmaking is a collaborative effort, and this decision ultimately did not have the full support of my entire cast and crew.” For more on Mel Gibson’s departure from the Hangover sequel hit the jump.

mel_gibson_braveheart_makeup_suit_01It appears Mel Gibson’s removal from The Hangover 2 can perhaps be directly attributed to the leaked cameo news. According to THR, “news of the casting stunt triggered an internal backlash at the studio and on the film” forcing the filmmakers to withdraw their offer. This is a downright shame for fans of The Hangover and film fans in general. Say what you will of Mel Gibson as a person, but the man is a damn fine actor with an astute sense of comedic chops (watch any of the Lethal Weapon films for proof on said matter). For those who will cite Mel Gibson’s public indiscretions as reason enough to dismiss him, might I remind you of another notable film figure who, well, may not have been the nicest of people in real life: namely John Wayne.

Do I think John Wayne was a good person? I don’t know – never met the man. Do I approve of Mr. Wayne’s views on certain subject matters? Of course not. Will any of this personal related information hinder my enjoyment of Rio Bravo or Who Shot Liberty Valance or The Searchers? Do I really even need to answer this question? And the same precedent holds true of Mel Gibson – in front of or behind the camera.

The Hangover 2, a sequel to 2009’s hit The Hangover, reunites the entire cast as they travel out to Thailand. It’s unclear if there will be a replacement for Mel Gibson in the film or if the entire thing will just be scrapped. The film is currently scheduled for release Memorial Day, 2011.

Meanwhile the Jodie Foster directed Mel Gibson headlining The Beaver continues to sit on a shelf and Gibson’s Untitled Viking Movie lurks in development hell.

Mel Gibson is a great actor and I love him in a lot of movies, it could’ve been good to see him in The Hangover but I guess it wasn’t meant to be.

People need to stop taking actors beliefs and opinions too seriously. Ostracizing somebody for being outspoken about their beliefs is ridiculous, if they do their job well then who cares. Mel Gibson has made some embarrassing mistakes in recent years but I don’t think they are big enough to crush his career.

I would agree with you if it was his taste in wines or his fave color. But the fact is he’s a racist and a very angry, drunk one at that. He’s also abusive to people around him. You are kidding yourself if you think that doesn’t matter because he made a few good movies.

I absolutely think we should hold actors and others in the spot light accountable for their actions. Just because they happen to be famous doesn’t forgive them for being an asshole.

I absolutely agree with Liam. It’s pathetic and disgusting that people just want to forget he’s a racist just because he’s a celeb. If he was a normal man who did the same things, people wouldn’t forgive and forget. The same goes for the paedophile and rapist polanski. the world has become disturbing for its ignorance.

When Zach Galifinakis directs something as good as Apocalypto, maybe I’ll give him his clout. Anyways, nobody in Hollywood ever said anything when Roman Polanski kept making movies.

Was it Galifinakis that didn’t want it happening?

      • Anonymous @

That’s what’s been inferred, but I’m sure he wasn’t the only one. It’s ironic, since Galifinakis didn’t seem to have any moral qualms about appearing in the first Hangover (and at the awards shows) with Mike Tyson…since you know he’s been convicted of rape and all.

There isn’t one thing written up their that specifically infers anything about Galifinakis. You sir, have some kinda axe to grind.

I didnt hear about who it was specifically or if it was the whole cast that didnt want Mel. Todd Phillips all but says he wanted Mad Mel but the other actors didnt. I think that is funny because with the exception of Cooper the whole cast is made up of B actors who are otherwise unknown. Zach is making a name for himself but his schtick is getting old and should be somewhere with Dane Cook by the time Hangover 2 bombs from bad reviews.

This cameo, had it been kept secret, would have just exploded in the movie similar to the way Tom Cruise stole Tropic Thunder.

Bad Mistake by the cast and studio. Sometimes the best way to get the juice rolling for a movie is to add a little controvery. The Hangover has a naked Galifinakis and Ken Jeong and wast too high brow to go for the gutter laughs, yet are we to think THE HANGOVER 2 will have a hint of class. With rumors of a Ed Helms character hooking up with a boy/girl (?) I highly doubt that..
