Mel Gibson to Direct Leonardo DiCaprio in Untitled Viking Movie

BFDealmemo Reports that Leonardo DiCaprio has signed on to star in a Viking movie directed by Mel Gibson.  No, I did not just Mad Lib up this news.  Oscar-winning screenwriter William Monahan (The Departed) will handle the script but nothing much is known about the project other than it involves Vikings and according to the report, “will be as unsparing as Gibson’s other period directing efforts Braveheart, The Passion of the Christ, and Apocalypto.”  I like how Variety uses the word “unsparing” to mean “gruesome to the point of fetishistic.”   BFD concludes their report by saying that DiCaprio will probably do a movie before this Viking tale, and I think that’s great because it will give Gibson the opportunity to pre-viz all the rape and pillaging.

Wow, Matt Goldberg, you’re really filled with hate and bile against Mel Gibson… You’re know there are movies out there that are far more violent than Mel Gibson’s (the SAWs, the HOSTELs, the Tarantino’s…), but still you feel the childish need to call Gibson’s appraoch to violence “fetichistic”…

Mel Gibson kicks ass as a director. Apocalypto was brilliant.

Mel Gibson accurately portrayed violence in those films appropriate to the story and the culture they were set in. His violence services the story. He never makes violence cool or stylized. It’s brutal, ugly, and makes you sick to your stomach. Cuz that’s what violence is suppose to make the normal human being feel.

Wow. Steve should edit your story Matt. Way too much hate and bias seeping through your writing. Mel Giibson has proven himself to be a worthy director at the very least. Respect shall be paid.

Matt, I am grateful that Mel Gibson is making these films instead of you. His direction is impeccable, and the stories change the way people think and feel. There are too many films made today with the same bloated studio approach, and the same recycled “Stars”. Mel Gibson takes tremendous risks both financially and creatively. His vision is always vindicated, the casting is not a “Box Office Deal” put together by super agents, and the creative results stand on their own merit. This guy consistently makes powerful, memorable and moving films. A critic like you does not create, but finds it easier to tear down something they will never understand.

Your last sentence doesn’t really make sense. It’s like saying that a car mechanic doesn’t know anything about cars because he doesn’t race them. Film critics don’t create movies, because…that’s not what a film critic is. A film critic is trained in film history, in critical judgment, and how to voice those criticisms. Their job is, in fact, to critically approach movies. This means, yes, sometimes they criticize things. …which is what critics do. What with the word ‘critic’ in there somewhere.

Seriously Matt, ‘Goldberg’ it’s not like you’re transparent or anything. How the hell do you know what’s going to be in his film? You’re just angry that Mel has the clout to fund and create his masterpieces outside of your ‘hollywood’ system. Good for him and shame on you.

Maybe it will be just nice Vikings farming and weaving as opposed to raping and pillaging.

Hell what’s the point of a Viking movie if there is no gratutious axe fighting, quaffing of ale and beards?!

Stop being so coy just because it is hip to be down on Gibson right now. When it comes to Vikings be realistic.

Bring on the hawks ripping out the eyes of lowly viking slaves. Tony Curtis digs it :)

Perhaps Mel will stay true to the period and have them speaking in Old Norse, like he did with Apocalypto and The Passion of the Christ. I'm glad William Monahan is writing the script – he wrote Kingdom of Heaven, as well.

I hope Mel Gibson uses Sissel Kyrkjebø the Norwegian singer for his Viking Movie, She was the one in the Lillihammer handover at the 1992 Albertville Olympics riding on the giant Ice Bear singing the
enthralling melody,” Molde Canticle”, as the Vikings are presented with the Norwegian Children. She also sings the Hauntingly Beautiful Norwegian song about Vikings returning home called, “Lær Meg Å Kjenne”.
