Our very first look at Jason Reitman’s latest is here and based on the tone of the trailer, Men, Women & Children could be one of his darker, most somber films yet.  In fact, I don’t think there’s a single smile in this entire thing.  Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but when you fall for laugh-heavy films like Juno and Young Adult (and also manage to forget that Labor Day even exists), this feels like quite the switch.  This is only a teaser trailer so it’s impossible to pass much judgment, but Reitman could have the performances to support it, with The Fault in Our Star’s Ansel Elgort being a standout here.  The piece also doesn’t offer up any concrete story details, but from the official synopsis and Chad Kulten’s source material, we know that Men, Women & Children will focus on high school students and their parents, and how their relationships, self-image and quality of life are affected by the internet.

Here’s the official synopsis for Men, Women & Children:

“MEN, WOMEN & CHILDREN” follows the story of a group of high school teenagers and their parents as they attempt to navigate the many ways the internet has changed their relationships, their communication, their self-image, and their love lives. The film attempts to stare down social issues such as video game culture, anorexia, infidelity, fame hunting, and the proliferation of illicit material on the internet. As each character and each relationship is tested, we are shown the variety of roads people choose – some tragic, some hopeful – as it becomes clear that no one is immune to this enormous social change that has come through our phones, our tablets, and our computers.

Wikipedia says that this is a comedy. None of that looked comedic. It looks to be the most realistic film about the internet since the Social Network. So I’m interested in it, and I’m always interested when Adam Sandler does dramas and when Jason Reitman makes a film.

Agreed. I feel Sandler’s comedic days are long gone, and now I like to see him go further into a dramatic career.

    • the king of comedy

Totally agree, after the things Sandler has done lately he should retire from comedy and try to make a carreer in dramas, look how that workde for Mathew, of course he was always a more talented actor than Sandler, but still he already has money and fame he should be trying to make something for wich he`ll be remembered instead of that guy who made awful movies.

Impressed that the teaser was over 2mins long. It was a small glimpse at all the characters, though, so I’ll be looking forward to the full trailer.

Let’s not forget how well Reitman uses music in his films. The cover of “I Feel Love” used is quite sad, it definitely sets the tone.

I can’t wait to see Adam Sandler in a movie that doesn’t feature Kevin James/Rob Schneider/David Spade/Nick Swardson/10 random athlete cameos. That alone gives me reason to look forward to this movie.

Adam Sandler is the best reason for NOT seeing this movie…

I thought he was decent in Punch Drunk Love and even Funny People……Jason Reitman has nothing on P.T. Anderson, but it has to be marginally better than Jack and Jill.

        Wow so ignorant..

      • NICK НΛRT

you’ve clearly never watched punch drunk love

    • feabnix

I was just about to say that it was strange to not see an animal piss in Sandler’s face in the trailer, but then again this is just a teaser.

He was building a profile for an escort site. Who knows what he’ll put in his likes and dislikes section…

Last chance for Adam Sandler to make a mark in film history. He has made far too many barf inducing movies after punch drunk love to be taken seriously. This does look interesting.

he tried and all of you people didn’t care. Spanglish. reign over me. he did do serious films but they all tanked.

      • stephens

I actually really enjoyed Spanglish, I know it wasn’t a big hit with audiences. Reign over me was a bit over the top though

The trailer was pretty damn powerful. Also loved the Up In The Air teaser trailer (my favourite Jason Reitman film). I still don’t understand all the Labor Day hate, I actually liked it quite a bit.

    • Vulcan

I love Up in the Air. I watch the airport security scene every time before I fly. So hilarious and true.

I love the camera work. Everything looks good here.

I just hope it doesn’t get too finger-waggy about social media. As long as it avoids preachiness, this has some major potential. It’s certainly a good teaser.

  • DoremusJessup

Sheeesh…this movie looks looks deeply unsettling. Definitely a movie for when youre in the mood to get introspective and saddened.

Good to see Gardner’s ‘beard’ work has paid off in a plethora of films.
