Alchemy has released the first trailer for Madame Bovary, Sophie Barthes (Cold Souls) adaptation of Gustave Flaubert's revered 19th Century classic of the same name.  The story follows Emma Bovary, a country girl who dreams of romance and excitement only to find herself stifled by her patriarchal era.  When Emma finally marries into the fine life she's always dreamed of  she finds herself feeling trapped and takes solace in other men.  Mia Wasikowska leads yet another literary classic as Emma, following her work in adaptations of Jane Eyre, The Double, and Alice in Wonderland.

Director Sophie Barthes co-wrote the screenplay with Rose Barreneche.  Madame Bovary also stars Paul Giamatti, Ezra Miller, Rhys Ifans, Henry Lloyd-Hughes, Logan Marshall-Green and Laura Carmichael, and hits theaters sometime this year.

The trailer looks well-acted and the costumes are absolutely stunning, but to be honest, this is so far out of my wheelhouse.  I get myopic when it comes to period pieces - they all look the same to me.  So, you guys sound off in the comments.  Does this look like the 19th century tragic-romance-bummer-time you've always wanted to see?
