Disney and Lucasfilm have just confirmed reports that screenwriter Michael Arndt (Toy Story 3) will write the screenplay for Star Wars: Episode VII.  We previously reported that Arndt was said to have already prepared a 40-50 page draft of at least the first new Star Wars installment and perhaps the entire sequel trilogy.  This was well in advance of the announcement of Disney’s purchase of Lucasfilm and the rights to Star Wars for more than $4 billion.  To see what Disney/Lucasfilm had to say, hit the jump.

  1. I just hope if the director wants to film outside – like really outside – George doesn’t roll by and say, “No need buddy, here’s a green screen – don’t worry, it will look just like the real thing!” Fuck that shit!

    • Yeah I agree. Way too much green screen in the prequels. It just looks off. Too clean and artificial. They need to Lord of the Rings it. Arndt doesn’t have a huge resume but he has a couple of solid hits. Now for the director.

      • Yeah I was watching Ep. 3 a while back and I noticed that there was not one real life location in that movie. All green screen. The greatest thing about watching Star Wars as a little kid was that everything in it was real and it was like really seeing crazy alien planets and beings. The prequels was like watching a video game. Even at the time it came out, I remember thinking those monster fish looked so fake. Whereas the Rancor in Jedi was so scary and awesome.

    • Yeah, they should adopt the style that Abrams used for Star Trek, where the space battles and action sequences have CGI, but the ships and other environments are actually filmed on constructed sets or location. Lucas took it too far in the wrong direction in the prequels. Odds are the new director won’t want to do that.

      • Wow, I’m so glad others realize that! Real locations and sets is the thing that made Star Wars feel so real and compelling. All those cgi environments sucked the life out of the prequels.

    • I also agree

Ive always thought that those prequels, bad script, bad acting and All would have been completely accepted if they had shot them in practical locations with a lot of practical effects, robot, makeup and puppet work .

I just think George shot them in the laziest possible way, The exact opposite of the way they shot the original trilogy

  2. We’re gold now as long as that talentless bitch Chris Nolan doesn’t get his hands on it. Hipsters: “Chris Nolan did Batman films with no style or imagination which means they were ‘realistic ‘. It don’t matter that it sucked hairy ball satchel because it was different than the stuff that came before, which means it good.”

Also Chris Nolan got a bunch of kids murdered at the Rises premiere because he put out a bunch of senseless violence in his pictures. I want Aronofsky to direct this bitch.

  3. Michael Arndt was an interesting choice…looking at his resume and accolades his writing quality is top-notch but he has no experience writing sci-fi, especially one of such high-profile pedigree…i still have faith, though…and Lucas is not the best director around so this can be either good or bad….
