GOTHAM Recap: “LoveCraft”

by     Posted 1 hour ago

gotham-recap

For Gotham’s mid-season finale, not a whole helluva lot happened.  Sure, Bruce learned a few new lessons about life, love, and balance.  Yes, Alfred finally got to show off just how badass he can be.  Everyone else, however, somehow managed to take a step backwards during what is meant to be an hour that drives full force into a cliffhanger ending.  Some shows know how to do this; Gotham is not one of them.  However, if there’s one saving grace for the series at this point, it’s that the writers have chosen a rather interesting twist to befall the lead character.

Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, Jason Sudeikis, and Jennifer Aniston Talk HORRIBLE BOSSES 2, Building Chemistry, Ad-Libbing, and More

If you thought the first film was crazy, Horrible Bosses 2 is wilder and crazier, upping the ante on every level.  After what happened with the bosses from hell, the first time around, Nick (Jason Bateman), Dale (Charlie Day) and Kurt (Jason Sudeikis) have decided to become their own bosses by launching their own business.  But when they’re outplayed by an investor (Christoph Waltz), the three best friends hatch another misguided plan, this time to kidnap the investor’s adult son (Chris Pine) and ransom him to get their company back.

During a conference at the film’s press day, co-stars Jason Bateman, Charlie Day and Jason Sudeikis were joined by Jennifer Aniston (who plays Dr. Julia Harris, the hot dentist with an overactive libido that she’s trying to get a handle on) to talk about building their chemistry, how much ad-libbing there was, saying such raunchy dialogue, upping the ante, getting Christoph Waltz to laugh, adding Chris Pine to the mix, making sure they got this film right, after the success of the first one, and whether they’d consider a third movie.  Check out what they had to say after the jump.

Kim Jong-Un and James Franco Are Katy Perry Fans in New THE INTERVIEW Trailer

by     Posted 2 hours ago

Sony has released a new The Interview trailer for This Is the End directors Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg‘s upcoming comedy.  James Franco and Rogen star as a talk show host and his producer, respectively, who travel to North Korea to interview dictator Kim Jong-un and legitimize themselves as real journalists.  Their plans are upended when the CIA recruits them to instead assassinate Kim Jong-un.  This new trailer introduces the film’s iteration of the North Korean dictator, played by Veep standout Randall Park.  We only get a brief glimpse of the character here, but it’s a promising introduction and I’m very eager to see how far Rogen and Goldberg take things as the full film progresses.

Watch the new (and apparently final) The Interview trailer after the jump, and if you missed any of Steve’s set visit coverage be sure to check out interviews with Rogen, Goldberg & Franco, Park, and his full set visit reportLizzy Caplan also stars.  The Interview opens in theaters on December 25th.

American Directing Duo Justin Benson & Aaron Moorhead Win Best Film at PIFFF 2014 for SPRING

The Paris International Fantastic Film Festival has come to an end, and the big winner of its Oeil d’Or (Golden Eye) for Best Film has been awarded to the American-Italian film Spring, directed by Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead.  Unlike most festivals, the audience is the jury in the feature films categories.  Benson later took to Twitter to thank the French audience for its support.

The closing ceremony ended with a screening of Kevin Smith’s rather disappointing Tusk, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last September. Justin Long stars as comedian-turned-podcaster targeted by a sadistic killer who wants to transform him into a walrus.  Not even Johnny Depp as the alcoholic ex-cop can save this horror of a film.

Michelle MacLaren Will Develop and Direct WONDER WOMAN; Zack Snyder to Produce

It appears that we now have a Wonder Woman director, and the choice gives fans of both the comics and filmmaking in general reason to rejoice.  When Warner Bros. first announced it was officially moving forward with a Wonder Woman movie, one of the first directors that immediately came to mind was Michelle MacLaren.  She’s been doing incredible work in television for years, helming notable episodes of Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, and The Walking Dead, and her move to feature filmmaking has been long overdue.  Some welcome news came a couple of weeks ago when it was reported that MacLaren was actually in talks to take the helm of WB’s Wonder Woman movie, and now word comes that MacLaren will indeed develop and direct the film.  More after the jump.

New BATMAN: ARKHAM KNIGHT Trailer Breaks out the Batmobile

It’s been too long since we saw a new Batman: Arkham Knight trailer, but Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has now given us a fresh look at the upcoming video game, which takes place one year after the events of Batman: Arkham City and finds the titular superhero squaring off against Scarecrow, who has united Batman’s enemies in a plot to finally kill The Bat.  To make matters more complicated, the mysterious “Arkham Knight” is in the mix.

In this trailer, we get a good look at some of the gameplay.  Specifically, we see how developer Rocksteady has attempted to seamlessly integrate the Batmobile into the combat by having Batman leap out of the vehicle to fight his enemies.  If you’re asking why Batman doesn’t just run everyone over, remember that Batman doesn’t kill people.  Hitting a person with a fast-moving assault vehicle tends to result in vehicular homicide.  But the gameplay does look cool, although I’m always wary of vehicles in video games because so many have awful controls.  Hit the jump to check out the new Batman: Arkham Knight trailer.  The game hits PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on June 2, 2015.

NBC Halts CONSTANTINE Production after 13 Episodes; Show Might Still Return for Second Season

Although fellow DC/WB projects Arrow, The Flash, and Gotham have found success on network television, the studio’s non-superhero television series, Constantine, has struggled to catch fire in its first season, although it’s too early to tell if it’s worth canceling.  The NBC show is based on the long-running comic series Hellblazer and follows a supernatural detective who helps fend off demons and dark magic.  I haven’t watched the series, but looking over Dave’s recaps, he seems to like it alright, so perhaps there’s a larger fanbase.  NBC needs all the help it can get on Friday nights (I have no idea how Hannibal is still on the air, but I’m grateful), so the freshman series may not be in the grave just yet.

Christian Bale Gets Romantic and Joel Edgerton Gets Angry in 2 New EXODUS: GODS AND KINGS Clips; Plus New Featurette

20th Century Fox just released a brand new Exodus: Gods and Kings featurette in which director Ridley Scott states the obvious, that his latest is epic in scale, but the studio also just unveiled two new clips that offer up a taste of some of the quieter, more intimate moments of the film.  The first gives us our first good look at Maria Valverde’s Zipporah as she runs through what makes Moses (Christian Bale) happy – while her bracelets jingle incessantly – and then the second shows what happens when you lie to Ramses (Joel Edgerton).

They’re both quality clips, but I also can’t say there’s anything particularly mind-blowing about them that’ll have you eager to see the film as soon as it comes out.  Hit the jump to check out both Exodus: Gods and Kings clips as well as that aforementioned featurette.  The film hits theaters on December 5th and also stars John Turturro, Aaron Paul, Ben Mendelsohn, Sigourney Weaver and Ben Kingsley.

James Gunn Calls the Shared Cinematic Universe a Flawed Business Model

We all know how this industry operates – if something is successful, it can’t just be a big winner on its own.  It’ll be dubbed the next big thing and many will try to ride the wave and make a profit off of the concept as well.  It’s happening with found footage horror movies, young adult book-to-film adaptations and superhero TV shows, but one of the biggest and riskiest trends of the moment is the shared cinematic universe.

Marvel’s currently dominating the box office with the MCU so, naturally, we’ve got DC and Warner Bros. showing off an enormous upcoming line-up, Sony trying to do something similar with the Spider-Man film franchise, Universal gunning to turn their classic monster movies into a new shared cinematic universe and we’ve also got Star Wars expanding laterally as well.  Perhaps there’s enough hype surrounding some of these properties for the studios to pull it off, but, as Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn points out, there’s a risk of some becoming cart-before-the-horse-type situations.  Hit the jump to check out his thoughts on the shared universe craze.

Oscar Isaac to Play Villain Apocalypse in X-MEN: APOCALYPSE

20th Century Fox has found its villain for the upcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past follow-up X-Men: Apocalypse, and the studio has nabbed one of the best actors working today to bring the character to life.  Variety reports that Inside Llewyn Davis star Oscar Isaac has signed on to play the titular antagonist, a very old mutant who was considered a god during the time of ancient Egypt.  The crux of Apocalypse takes place in the 1980s and the film has been described as a “disaster movie”, so the powerful villain presumably acts as a formidable force for the X-Men team.  More after the jump.

Christoph Waltz May Be Playing Blofeld in BOND 24

2012’s Skyfall was almost certainly one of the best entries in the James Bond franchise to date (if not the best), but it looks like returning director Sam Mendes may be upping the ante in the follow-up.  Skyfall was a successful attempt at melding the legacy of the Bond franchise with its most recent Daniel Craig-fronted iteration, as the story simultaneously addressed how a person like James Bond fits into the modern landscape while also referencing some of the series’ most notable hallmarks.  With the ending of Skyfall acting as a mild reset to the goings-on at MI 6, a new rumor now claims that Mendes might be resurrecting one of the most famous Bond villains of all with actor Christoph Waltz’s role in the upcoming Bond 24: Ernst Stavro Blofeld.  More after the jump.
