Michael Bay Responds to Fan Outrage over “Alien Race” TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES

     March 20, 2012

Yesterday, some people found a new reason to dislike Michael Bay when he revealed that the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles would be “from an alien race.”  Even though I liked TMNT as a kid, I wasn’t outraged as much as I was confused.  If they’re aliens, then where does the “mutant” part come in? (Matt Patches pointed out on Twitter that aliens could have been the ones to do the mutating as opposed to the ooze from the TV series and 90s movies)  I was also confused by Bay’s comment that because of the change from mutants to aliens, “kids are going to believe, one day, that these turtles actually do exist when we are done with this movie.”  I didn’t see the value in making kids believe the turtles are non-fictional characters.

But other fans were greatly upset over the change, and to those fans, Bay has a message: “Chill.”  Hit the jump for more.  The live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie will be directed by Jonathan Liebesman (Battle: Los Angeles) and written by Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec (Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol).  The movie is slated to open on December 25, 2013.

Here’s what Bay had to say to fans via his official website:

Fans need to take a breath, and chill. They have not read the script. Our team is working closely with one of the original creators of Ninja Turtles to help expand and give a more complex back story. Relax, we are including everything that made you become fans in the first place. We are just building a richer world.

I’m pretty sure “more complex back story” and “richer world” don’t mean anything to anyone who’s already upset over this.  And perhaps nothing could calm their anger other than “I’m sorry I didn’t stick to canon with regards to giant reptiles who know martial arts; of course they’re mutated from ooze.”  Personally, I just hope Bay’s “richer world” includes wacky stuff like the Technodrome and Krang.

  • Mr.H

I don’t even care at all about Teenage Mutant Turtles and even I’m scared about this. Judging by Bay’s past resume, I’ll assume this will be a diasaster of epic proportions.

    • LAME

Dude, why did you even comment on this in the first place? If you don’t care at all then you shouldn’t have bothered. Maybe you do care.

  • Mr.H

Oh wait, the film isn’t directed by Bay scratch that.

    • LAME

I think Bay is producing. This means he is the one who “owns” the movie. The director is the one who interprets the idea, while the producer is whom brings it all together (the concept of the movie is his). Remember movies like Street Fighter, Doom or Dragon Ball Evolution? Well, it all was because of the producer(s) lack of.. whatever they lack of.

A great producer has to find a great writer and a great director in order to make a great film.

Now, he has done good things as a producer in the past. Let’s just hope he doesn’t have a twisted idea about TMNT. It all depends on that.

  • Kyle

Oh boy. Can’t believe I’m defending Michael Bay, but there’s a lot of Turtle’s fans who don’t really know the history of the TMNT.

There was the 80s cartoon series that dealt with a talking brain from dimension X and a sequel film called “the secret of the ooze” but before all that the original origin of the Turtles involved aliens!

In the original Mirage comic book (issue #4) the Turtles discover the T.C.R.I. company. T.C.R.I. was the logo on the can of ooze that caused their mutation. The T.C.R.I. company is actually a front for peaceful aliens, stranded on Earth, who inadvertently cause the Turtles to mutate. They are also responsible for giving Daredevil his powers (no kidding!)

The aliens are developing a transport/matter device to get them home an inadvertantly send the Turtles to another “richer world”. In this ‘world’, that is heavily influenced by Star Wars, the evil Federation is fighting a galactic war against a warrior race of alien dinosaurs called Triceritons. The Turtles get caught in the middle. It’s actually a lot of fun and much more compelling than anything from the 80s cartoon.

I think they even had a 2000 cartoon that followed this plot, but not too many people watched that show.

If Michael Bay is going back to the original Mirage comics for stories then I tip my hat to him.

    • Chris Etrata

The comic only said that the ooze came from the aliens. It never said the turtles themeselves were aliens, unlike Michael Bays plan. Mutating is not the same thing as being an alien.

      Other additions in this film

Cowabunga screamed numerous times in the same way as Optimus.

April played by a Victoria’s secret model.

When Michael Bay said he is making for the fans, does he mean tmnt fans or bays fans?

Script? What script? It’s just 100 minutes explosions and 50 minutes of bodyshots.

    • LAME

LOL. That’s true, but I didn’t know Daredevil had a connection to the turtles. Thanks for the info.

    • Jesus

If he’d said the turtles were “mutated by aliens” and not just that they “are aliens” I’d be psyched because yeah, good for Bay to dig so far into the origins to show Utroms some love. But that’s not what he said, and if he meant otherwise, he had a chance to say so in his above-quoted blog entry. But he doesn’t.

  • Jk

    Fuck you

  • http://www.facebook.com/funnyhippie Droncz92

    Sounds like bs to me

  • Brett

I can’t believe I want to defend Michael Bay for once. Who really gives a damn?

  • Rosencrantz

Didn’t he say something very similar to this about “Transformers”? “A more complex back story and richer world?” Shudder to think what kind richer world he’s going to concoct this time around. He has officially replaced Joel Schumacher as the worst director to corrupt the geek world. (In my eyes anyway.)

  • Phil

“Building a richer world”. This coming from the guy who once stated in an interview that he prefers writers simply write “action scene” rather than trying to describe specifics. That is one of the reasons I loathe him. He thinks that movement, loud noises and bright colors can substitute for story and character development.

“Just razzle dazzle the morons and they’ll never realize there was no plot”.

  • Tarek

the words : complex” and “richer” in the mouth of Bay would mean anything but : Huge CGI fest.

  • terry

I will never spend another dime supporting a Michael Bay film. I hate his f****** guts.
    Rich, schmuck, do**he bag!

  • justin

Most of you people are F*&^ pathetic. Like really, you take this stuff so personal. 1, you don’t even know the guy. 2, HE’S NOT DIRECTING THE MOVIE!. For crying out loud stop being a bunch of babies! It’s just a FREAKIN MOVIE.

    • Truth Troll

No its not “just a freakin movie” it is the childhood of numerous 90s kids. Michael Bay doesn’t care that he is destroying everything some of us held dear about the 90s.

Bay is a high functioning retard that has zero humanity left in his heartless soul. He is the embodiment of everything that is wrong about the movie industry and he gets praise for it.

Although he is dragging his fat bloated ego all the way to the bank. Just goes to show you people don’t want new and original, they just want explosions.

      • Adult

If it offends your childhood so much, then you haven’t grown up. This isn’t for children of the 90s.

This is for today’s youth and I doubt they’re raging over the matter.

As an adult, you should have much more serious things to care about soo get over your tantrum and and stop being a fanbaby.

      • justin

lol wow, your childhood memory. People use that excuse countless time and its so annoying. You are sooo immature and you act like your a 7 year old kid who cries in the cereal section. And for your so called “child hood memory, if you actually new the TMNT story, they did have aliens. So do your research. Your the obviously retard.

      • Truth Troll

        You’re reading comprehension is atrocious.

I never once said “my childhood” or made any correlation to me, myself or I.

      • MUTANTS

Truth Troll you well and truly do speak the truth. Bang on correct about Bay and his disregard and exploiting of things that people care about.

These fools sticking up for him and his cinematic spawn are obviously people who accepted Transformers 2 & 3 as good films, hmm go figure.
Some people are happy to eat any old shit that is put in front of them

      • wolverqueen

When you write “he is destroying everything some of us held dear” you are making a direct correlation to yourself.

It would seem that you are a Lie Troll.

As for TMNT, being that they were shit in the first place I hope that Bay fucks it up beyond all recognition for you. I hope that Aliens are coming out of their arse and that stupid rat gets spit roasted by Optimus and Bumblebee.

      • dan

So you’re speaking on behalf of other people and their childhood memories? How stupid is that/you! Grow up and get a life! Why don’t you care about something that actually matters in life instead of a stupid Michael Bay movie and a children’s cartoon?

      Title: It’s Just A Movie!

      Int. Dark Basement.

Int. Dark Basement. Different day; more wrinkled paper towels in piles.

Justin is fapping to transsexual midget p**n.

      Fade to black.

Int. Dark Basement. Different day; yet larger piles of messy paper towels.

Justin is fapping to transsexual midget p**n. Justins mother comes down as he is climaxing.

JUSTINS MOTHER: “Justin. For crying out loud. You need to get out once in a while. Go see your friends in that cinema club of yours.”

JUSTIN: “Moo-ooom! Don’t you know how to knock?!”

Int. Large Room. Hazy with cigarette smoke. Filled with black, militant looking, black panther -type men in their mid twenties. A movie is projected in one wall. Justin walks in.

JUSTIN: “Hi guys. What are you watching?”

MILITANT MAN 1: “Birth of a Nation.”

JUSTIN: “Cool. Is it any good?”

MILITANT MAN 1: “No. It’s not. Actually, it’s offensive bulls**t.”

JUSTIN: “Most of you people are F*&^ pathetic. Like really, you take this stuff so personal. For crying out loud stop being a bunch of babies! It’s just a FREAKIN MOVIE.”

Twenty bald black heads turn to Justin.

      Fade to black.

      Int. Dark Basement.

Justin is watching transsexual midget p**n. His both hands are in casts, and he is looking very frustrated, as he is trying to reach for something very small but his arms won’t bend.

Camera pulls slowly back from him. It keeps pulling back, until suddenly it pulls back from a computer screen in which previously described short film has been playing! Camera turns slowly revealing Justin, who is startled and scared and looking in turns at the screen and directly to the camera.

JUSTIN: “No! NO! That’s not me. What the… That’s not me! That’s not anything like me. That’s not fair! That’s not who I am!”

As Justin keeps whining, camera turns slowly back to the computer screen (now filled with text) and zooms in until there is only one line of text visible: “It’s just a movie.”

      Fade to black.

      End Credits.

  • Jorge

Good, keep them as aliens and change more things! The more you change will just make this a different movie and not a TMNT movie in my book, so change everything that way I dont have to hear about you ruining my childhood fav toys/movies/games/show/comics

  • Jordan N.

It’s Michael Bay. When he says he’s building a richer world, don’t believe it. It’s all going to be mindless action and nonsense. Sounds like he’s going to do to TMNT what he did to Transformers.

  • Grayden

the only thing “alien” about this movie should be the lifeforms from another dimension, like Krang, should they choose to include him.

TMNT worked just fine as live-action when it stuck to the original story. the camp was suitable for the late 80s, early 90s, but I wouldn’t mind if they went darker. How the original comic series was, with all red headbands, white eyes…gritty.

  • Pragmator

It could be worse. He could have been chosen to direct “The Avengers”. Or “Man of Steel”. Or “Transform–” … Ooops!

Michael Bay isn’t the only film maker who loves to change things around for no good reason–but since he’s so high-profile and has a disdain for the properties he takes on … that’s why he’s loathed.

But yeah, instead of being at least understanding of fan apprehension, he’s dismissive. “I know better than you.” Real good work there, Michael.

  • Mrtigerthunder

This just means that the first 10 minutes of the movie will be back story to how the turtles became mutated and know martial arts. All while the next, hour and a half?, will be one giant non stop fighting scene that no one cares about.

  • Adam

these Hollywood fuc###s are ruining every childhood story and fantasy tales .. They wont hesitate to money selling their own parents too… fucking pathetic !

  • David Savage

    Talk about bastardizing a franchise…

Alien turtles that know the Earth martial art of ninjitsu who are also teenage aliens, is a massive step away from the original origins. Turtles are an Earth creature Why alienize them? Why couldn’t you expand on the universe by bringing aliens to them (& Earth) instead? What a big mistake Mr Bay and the wacky script writers are doing. I for one will NOT pay my money to see my childhood heroes be turned into aliens… Screw you all.

  • anti bay

i think some are also forgetting tat he is a crappy storyteller. transformers was a disgrace not only bc of the story change but bc the action was confusing, acting poor, new story was full of holes, and the sequel was worse.

  • Sean

I was a die hard turtle fan growing up, but I understand the desire for freshening up a franchise. It did wonders for Batman, not to mention the various tweeks made to character origins in the other great recent superhero movies. “Turtles from an alien race” may mean normal turtles mutated by aliens for all we know, and that isn’t too drastic of a departure.

The problem is the filmmakers. Bay can make something sell and Platinum Dunes can make it flashy, but in my opinion, neither has done well when it comes to quality franchise updates. They haven’t earned the trust of fanboys, hence the backlash.

  • Dustin

My goodness! When people talk about ‘trolls’ and ‘rabid fan boys’ in regards to the dark side of film franchise fandom, they will have to look no further then these discussion boards that are addressing Michael Bay and the supposed “alien turtle-gate”.

Please take Mr. Bay’s advice and chill out you trollish fan boys. I know its trendy to hate on Bay, but the guy actually makes quality films on his own terms. You may hate his a.d.d. rapid-fire style, and some of the dumb humor he peppers his films with, but I think film history will show that he is matched only by a few other film makers in his ability construct a damn fine pop corn flick.

And as was previously stated in another post in this thread, he is just producing the dang movie!

Plus the original creators are involved with this movie. For all you trolls and haters who are going on and on about your child hood being raped, go back to the original comic books!

The old 90′s movies, especially the dreadful Turtle III (the stupid time travel one) could have been accused of the same sins of straying from source material.

And don’t even get me started on how much the early 90′s cartoon changed stuff to make the whole franchise more kid friendly! The original Turtles all wore red, and killed foot soldiers. The original comic was geared towards adults!

So shut up. Please, for the sake of all of us who are actually interested in the potential of a fresh take on the Turtles that involves the original creators of the comic book; please, shut up.

    Thank you.

fair point, but TMNT or rather TANT fanboyism aside, Michael Bay’s films are shit, like proper shit. So you have lost credibility in your argument against people who don’t want this fool involved in bringing childhood icons to the big screen by sticking up for a man who cant even string a basic narrative together or tell stories with characters without them being nothing more than cartoon characters, who thinks running thru a street with a camera thru explosions will distract the idiots from the lack of story ect ect and every other Bay cliche’. No its not cool to hate on Bay, its just what most fans of decent films agree on, that he is the devil of film making. If you think he is a good director then fine, great, some people are just easily pleased i guess and will eat any old shit put in front of them. Directing or Producing, Bays involvement is not going to give a fan or anyone sane confidence that he will do the goods, sorry, but a fan has the right to complain.
And if your thinking the old “get over it, its just a film” crap, then why are you on a website dedicated to film news, gossip and discussions and be surprised to see “fanboys” and “trolls” commenting on franchises that they are fans of? Seems you can’t voice your thoughts without being put in a box. You stick up for it your a fanboy, you hate on it your a troll haha, really.

I tell you what, i will “troll” about Michael Bay anytime and anywhere for the foreseeable future, because the guy deserves it!

      Thank you :)

      • Dustin

I normally don’t take the troll bait, but it is late, and I am feeling just silly enough to thwart your entire post here Mutant:

All you have done is regurgitated Michael Bay hatred.

You didn’t say a word to refute the fact that the original creator/s is/are involved in this film, which proves this is not merely a Michael Bay show boat, but an attempt to refresh a sagging franchise that really only produced ONE good film.

If you are hating on Michael Bay, but won’t even comment on the dreadful TMNT II & III, then what kind of film buff/historian/fan are you any how? A troll with a one track mind; Every Bay film has had at least a pocket of reputable critics defending it. The first Transformers was nearly fresh on the tomato meter.

Roger Ebert himself said in his review for Transformers:

“I think Michael Bay sometimes sucks (“Pearl Harbor,” “Armageddon,” “Bad Boys II”) but I find it possible to love him for a movie like “Transformers.” It’s goofy fun with a lot of stuff that blows up real good, and it has the grace not only to realize how preposterous it is, but to make that into an asset.”

Now there is the voice of the anti-troll. A reasoned, educated critic who will admit that Michael Bay can actually make credible art. James Cameron is a friend of Bay and has vocally praised the Transformer franchise. Spielberg has been the producer on all the Transformer films.

So the man has respect from reputable critics and peers.

You sir are just a parrot, repeating the same tired hatred.

And apparently you are the one who doesn’t realize that you are commenting on “a website dedicated to film news, gossip and discussions” because you didn’t even go near my meaty comments concerning the fact that the 90′s incarnations of TMNT themselves were highly altered from the original gritty, adult themed comics.

So you prove your self not only to be a trolling parrot, but one who doesn’t even have anything substantial to add to my completely legit discussion point.

        Thank You… Again

What I don’t understand is why do filmmakers feel that the only way to adapt an existing property is by changing some essential aspect or to make it “dark” or “gritty” in order to have the audience come and see it?

Don’t get me wrong, it’s completely within the filmmaker’s right to do so, but why adapt something if you’re going to make drastic changes to it?

It’s like they have a basic idea of what type of film they want to make (including what elements they want to have in it) but they need some sort of inspiration (aka an existing property) to pull their ideas together into a plot.

If Michael Bay and his company want to make a film about aliens then why not make an alien film with the main characters knowing (or learning from Earth) a form of martial arts in order to defeat a foe. Take “Chronicle” for example, which was clearly inspired by “Akira” but since they want to put their own spin on it, they just made a different movie.

Why make a feature adaptation just for the sake of brand recognition? They’re going to spend a lot of money and time behind it, so why not just make a decent adaptation that at least respects the source material?

    • Jason

“What I don’t understand is why do filmmakers feel that the only way to adapt an existing property is by changing some essential aspect or to make it “dark” or “gritty” in order to have the audience come and see it? ”

Except that the original TMNT comic book (not the 80s cartoon which was loosely based on it) was dark and gritty.

Bay does not care at all about the outrage or why people loved the Turtles back in the day. This is all about making a commercial for merchandise. I guess pollution affecting animals and giving them strange mutations is more far fetched to him than aliens. Prick

  • mike.A

Bay is really screwing up with this one. Aliens are you serious? Look its ok to have your ideas for movies just save em for the right movies. Just like Lucas could’ve saved the alien idea for another flick he decided to put em in indy 4 and it was horrible. Well same thing goes for tmnt. Leave them as mutants and save the aliens for another film. And for gods sake not a sequel to I am number 4.

  • ecto1a

First off, I never post but I can’t hold back on this.
Let me say some FACTS here, you can argue w/ them but please don’t post your ignorance, it really won’t help any argument you have if you disagree w/ the FACTS.
Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird created the TMNT in comic book form in the ‘80’s.
In the comic there is blood, cussing, drinking beer (I believe), aliens, space travel, human Foot soldiers, & there is NOT Krang, the technodrome, or robot foot soldiers
After the Sci-Fi comic book series took off there was a cartoon. This is where Fred Wolf got involved, and where most you apparently are stuck.
    Michael Bay is not directing.
End of facts and enter my opinion:
If you are complaining about Bebop, Krang, Technodrome, & other nonsense, then please go watch the cartoons. Fred Wolf took the Adult/True/Original version of the turtles and turned them into a campy kids friendly cartoon. If that’s what you want in a movie then I personally don’t consider you a true TMNT fan and don’t understand why you haven’t graduated to the original comics yet. What made those cartoons special to you wouldn’t work in a movie anyway.
If Michael Bay is really working w/ Eastman or Laird-then by all means I do tip my hat. Something I haven’t done since The Rock. If there’s Sci-Fi then awesome, there’s supposed to be! If there’s no Krang but there is a population of Utroms-even better. If there’s the Fugitiod instead of a dumb professor- he’s the man!
If you don’t know what an Utrom or Fugitiod is-THEN STOP CRYING AND STOP POSTING

How does this hack, Michael Bay keep getting work?? Oh, wait, I know how, because you people keep going to see his movies.

Stop going to see Michael Bay movies, and he will stop getting work – or at minimum, the studios will start cutting his budget.

Then again, it will be fun to hear everyone complain when Bay gets hired to direct movies like live action Thundercats and Voltron.

  • Sparky

What an ass hat. This movie is going to suck.

    You people don’t get it.

We HAVE to bitch about these little things, because if we don’t, then the people at Hollywood will get away with much worse shit than that.

For example, the new Sherlock Holmes show that is being made.
It’s going to be set in New York City in our days and Watson will be a WOMAN!!! How dare they?!

We have to do our best to make sure these modifications Bay is making don’t get out of hand. So we start complaining from the start.

  • Vinícius

*And the woman will be Lucy Liu ¬¬

  • Richard

No Kraang or Technodrome. If you’re going to bring some BS crap about Turtles being Aliens, stick to the Comics. & you working with one of the creators has to be Kevin. Peter hasn’t been apart of TMNT in over a decade. I don’t know how hard it is to keep it to the comics. Why does every Hollywood F-Head have to alter a concrete story?

Don’t ever tell a fan to “chill” if you are shifting things. You go in that direction, you might as well become M. Night Shyamalan.

I could be wrong but I am fairly certain that the Ooze that changed the turtles in the original 80s show was eventually tied to Krang an alien, though not a peaceful one obviously.
