Michael Bay Is Directing TRANSFORMERS 4; Film Will Be a Reboot [Update: Release Scheduled for June 29, 2014]

     February 13, 2012

Well that was fast. Earlier today we reported that Paramount was eyeing a 2014 release date for Transformers 4. It wasn’t exactly shocking news, as we new the studio was keen on continuing the Transformers franchise, but there was no update on whether or not Michael Bay would be returning to direct or what the story would entail. What a difference a few hours makes, as producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura has now not only confirmed that Bay will be returning to direct, but Transformers 4 is going to be a reboot of the franchise. Hit the jump for much more.

[Update: Paramount has confirmed in a press release that Bay will return.  Additionally, they've scheduled the movie for June 29, 2014.  The press release is added to the bottom of the post after the original story.]

transformers-4-michael-bayBay previously stated that he would vacate the franchise after Dark of the Moon, but back in December rumors started swirling that Bay was in fact considering directing Transformers 4. It’s not a huge surprise, as the series is a ginormous money-maker for Bay and both he and Paramount would benefit greatly from his return. Bay responded to the rumors by saying he hadn’t solidified what movies he was directing in the future beyond Pain and Gain, and then news went quiet. Until today. Speaking with MTV’s Josh Horowitz, di Bonaventura had this to say regarding Bay’s involvement:

“Yeah Michael’s gonna direct and it’ll be releasing in the summer of 2014. We’re excited and I think the challenge there is we really are gonna do a reboot, and what that’s gonna be we don’t even know yet.”

transformers-4-movie-imageI’m heavily in favor of the reboot approach to the franchise, as I think Transformers is definitely in need of some freshness. Today’s earlier report likened the follow-up to G.I. Joe: Retaliation in that a couple characters from the original may carry over, but it’ll be a new story with new characters. Di Bonaventura clarified what kind of reboot we’re looking at:

“Well I mean again it’s hybrid. It’s not the way—I’m not involved with Spider-Man but what I perceive Spider-Man to be is a redoing of the whole thing, [Transformers 4] is not. It’s an evolution. There’s still continuity that’s going on, and yet there’ll be a lot of new cast. Whether there’s anybody from the [original] cast, we don’t even know yet. But the truth is, it’s gonna be a whole new story. The characters that would certainly come along would be Optimus and Bumblebee I’m sure.”

Horowitz asked whether or not any of the earlier casting rumors were true, including Jason Statham, which di Bonaventura flat out denied:

“No, it’s so silly. We’ve gotta get a story first. You can’t pick characters until you have a story.”

It’ll be interesting to see who’s handling script duties on the follow-up, and what characters (if any) they bring back. Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox are definitely done with the series, but I could see them using John Turturro’s character as the bridge between the first three films and the “new” Transformers. Nevertheless, we should hear more soon. Bay will next shoot his passion project Pain and Gain this April with Dwayne Johnson and Mark Wahlberg, after which one assumes he’ll dive back into Transformers full-time. You can watch Horowitz’s full interview with di Bonaventura below:

michael-bay-pain-and-gainUpdate: Here’s the press release:

HOLLYWOOD, CA (February 13, 2012) – Paramount Pictures announced today that director Michael Bay has signed a two-picture deal with the studio, which will commence this spring with the filming of “Pain and Gain,” and will be followed by the next installment in the hit “Transformers” franchise.

Based on a true story, “Pain and Gain” follows a group of bodybuilders who engaged in a campaign of kidnapping, extortion and murder in Florida. First told in an article from the Miami New Times, “Pain and Gain,” will be directed by Bay and will star Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Expected to begin production in early spring, the movie’s producers include Bay, Donald De Line and Ian Bryce.

Following “Pain and Gain,” Bay will bring audiences a new take on the “Transformers” franchise as he begins production on the fourth installment in the hit series of movies based on the best-selling Hasbro toyline. The third, and most recent installment of the franchise, “Transformers: Dark of the Moon,” is the fourth highest global grossing film of all time with 1.24 billion dollars of worldwide box office success. Directed by Bay, the movie will re-unite the filmmaking team from the hit franchise, including producers Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Don Murphy, Tom DeSanto and Ian Bryce; and executive producers Steven Spielberg, Bay, Brian Goldner and Mark Vahradian. Paramount Pictures will release the film on June 29th, 2014.

“Michael has been working on PAIN AND GAIN for a number of years but has patiently waited for the perfect casting to trigger a start,” said Adam Goodman, President of Paramount’s Film Group. “Clearly his patience has paid off as we couldn’t be more excited about this combo. His passion for this project is just awesome.”

whats wrong with a new transformers movie. Transformers is a fucking epic and incredible franchise. I really hope they make a new one.

  • sense 11

So the transformers are going to look like mangled pieces of metal cr@p again,

  • james

    A reboot? Seriously?

  • james

lol “Yeah, we’re making another one. We don’t have any idea why, other than the money to be made.”

    • nkutzler

I don’t understand. They’ve proven that the movies will make boatloads even if the movies are highly offensive and critically destroyed. But why wouldn’t they take a better director, keep great action scenes but make it something that TOS generation will like as well?

  • WEV

no, no, no, god no! This is one franchise that does actually crying out for a reboot to be fair, but with the same director, really? oh god, looks like we are never going to get the good Transformers movie after all, we are stuck with that twit giving us dumb ass crud! Arghhh hasn’t this poor franchise been raped enough by Bay and ok, leave it be!

ha…”I think the challenge there is we really are gonna do a reboot, and what that’s gonna be we don’t even know yet”…yeah, thats a real good sign that its going to be a movie.
    Why don’t you….
a:Get a different director, b: wait til you have a good strong idea instead of rushing out a big turd or c:not even bother making it at all, ever!

    • WEV

excuse the poor grammar and missing words, a typical mental reaction to any M.Bay news :/

  • Justin

A reboot won’t change anything because they have the same garbage director sitting behind the wheel of the movie. He’s made three movies in the franchise, the next first than the last one and the first one was, honestly, not that great to begin with. The only honestly good thing to come out of all of this is the new animated series the franchise had

    • Justin

the franchise has brought out, like Prime and Animated.

Continued from last post due to a slip.

  • nkutzler

    1. Story didn’t seem to matter for the first 3.
    2. So, “reboot” to them is just a way of saying Shia jumped ship.

What most fans want is a director who can make a faithful story.

  • Paul

How the fuck can this be a reboot if it’s going to have the same director & (most likely) the entire same crew? It’s going to look & feel EXACTLY like the last 3.

Ugh….. does this mean Bay is going to REINTRODUCE Optimus Prime & Megatron again? Oh well, it’s not like I’ve actually paid to see one of these movies since the first one so it’s not like I’m going to lose any money over this.

  • Sean

It’s a reboot but in the same continuity with the same director. So in other words it’s not a reboot. What am I missing, how is something by the same creative team and in the same continuity a reboot? Unless we’re not getting Optimus Prime, I don’t get it.

  • Armand

WHY?! Admittedly, I enjoyed the hell out of the first one, the second one was a turd, the third one was a turd for half a movie than just turned into a good action movie, overall, meh. They don’t need Michael Bay to make the shit tonne of money the others made, simply cause it has the name TRANSFORMERS and it has the robots we know and love it will make money, but clearly, cause Michael Bay was there when it made that much money, they have to go thru with it. If this is the direction theyre taking, one could hope, they get rid of the GOD AWFUL SCREENWRITER Ehren Kruger who no seems to point the finger at cause they are too busy pointing it at Bay. They also need to redesign and focus on the Robots! One could only hope..

  • WEV

i cant let it go haha!……

“It’s an evolution. There’s still continuity that’s going on, and yet there’ll be a lot of new cast”

aahahahhahahaha erm what, when has there ever been any continuity in these films.
All their plots are incoherent and when you look at them as a trilogy and how the stories intertwine with each other, you realise that no one involved in the films had a clue what was going on or what was going to happen and each film completely disregards what happens in the previous ones. In a way, it’s like each M.Bay TF film is a reboot, each film has the same beats, something secret to do with the transformers is hidden somewhere around humans thats been here all along and will cause bad comedy and explosions!
There is no arc over the course of those films, no outcome or resolution to anything, nothing from previous films carry through to the next film, other than the crass humor and terrible characters.

    Terrible film making, absolutely shameful!

Man…this is so dumb….They should of at least waited 5 years or so…I dont think the interest is going to be that high..idk

Lose some of the comedic elements, intensify the mood, bring on outer space setting, STAR WARS only with Giant Robots. I am telling’ ya!

  • Haswell

I saw the first few minutes of DARK OF THE MOON, and suddenly I realized how much I miss STAR WARS interstellar adventure with its diverse cultures at war with each other. This is the direction TRANSFORMERS producers should take. Forget Earth, forget underage teenagers, forget the slapstick comedies. Bring on hard core science fiction action adventure. George Lucas is pushing 70, and he is not doing STAR WARS on the big screen ever again…

Wow! I guess I’ll just have to keep watching the animated 86 movie over and over again. If someone would have told me that the characters in one cartoon movie made 20 years ago would have more depth then the characters from 3 live action transformer movies I would have said impossible. Thanks Michael Bay. Give one moment from Bays atrocities that has as much emotion as when Optimus dies in the original animated movie.

    • sense 11

      You preach the truth

  • Pingback: Paramount Eyeing a 2014 Release for TRANSFORMERS 4?()

  • Michael Horne

A lifelong 20+ years Transformers fan breathes a depressed *sigh*… Can’t help agree with ScaredForMovies – the death of Optimus in the original movie was an iconic moment!

The reboot approach isn’t going to work unless they take it to Cybertron and leave Earth alone. It’s already been made clear that there are not 100s of Transformers left… And it’s not like you can just ignore the ones on Earth in the guise of a reboot.

Plus, you can’t have Transformers without Optimus Prime – it just wouldn’t work. Full stop.

What surprises me looking back is the lack of epic-ness of the first three films. The best animated episodes were always when they opened up the playing field – look at episodes like Ultimate Doom and also the original movie – threat on a global/Galaxy-wide scale. Bay and the writers need to take what they’ve established and give it the heart of the original comics and cartoons.

I have no problems with Sam – he’s a different take on Spike from the cartoon. The parents are just… pointless. The girlfriend (whoever) can be dropped. But Sam is useful.

More interplay between the machines themselves and more characterisation without the rubbish (i.e. the Twins) and you’d have a great movie.

Nothing wrong with Bay’s eye for action, but those scripts…

    • TheTruth

Eye for action? Most prepubescent teens have more sensibility than Bay. What he calls action is nothing more than a jumbled hyperactive mess of quick shots that aren’t even remotely discernible to the human eye.

    Can’t wait…

This is amazing news. Transformers 1 was simply the best big, fun pop corn movie for a long long time.

T2 was quite crap but the forest fight was worth the entire movie.

T3 was great apart from the annoying little robots and the bald one.

  • jayjay

damn, i wanted him to do Pain and Gain then Bad Boys 3, but i guess thats out. Since Michael Haneke did a remake of Funny Games in 2007, ive never heard of a director rebooting/remaking his own movie.

  • Tayto

  • Nomis1700

Well… It would be cool if they shoot it with 48fps and/or IMAX…

  • Toastman

Okay, I actually rather enjoyed Transformers 1 and 3 (and loved the forest battle in Transformers 2), so I’m not a hater, but we’ve seen Bay’s take on the franchise three times now, it would have been nice to get a fresh director for the pseudo-reboot.

  • Tarek

    We must reboot Hollywood.

    • talksalot

yeaaaaah i agree. btw, random comment: why has everybody forgoten about jigoe???????

  • Razalian

I am no big fan of Michael Bay but I wouldn’t mind him sticking with Transformers. No one else can pull of the action & explosions like him…lol.
I am only concerned that they reboot it right, which is, yes have humans but don’t keep the main focus of “humans” as the primary story. Hell, the film can be only on Cybertron & we wouldn’t have a clue because all the focus is hating on Michael Bay.
Now this is truly being optimistic. Do remember, though, that he did hear & responded to the feedback (critics/fans) of Transformers 2 & made 3 somewhat better but it hardly was possible to redeem it with that sort of story-line & “conflicts”.

  • geHuC

The he described it I don’t see it as a reboot, but more like how comics are. Where, in a sense we get the same basic main cast, but a whole lot of different stories that don’t seem to affect the universe at all. Which I don’t really mind, because admit it who doesn’t like giant robots kicking each others asses ? and this way we can still get to see that without having to totally reboot the franchise 10 years after the first movie, or get boggled down with the continuity from the previous films. As for still using Michael Bay, dude can really dish out great action scenes.

  • joe

A reboot would mean Bay not being involved again.
So how is this a reboot again?
Bay suddenly develops a passion for the narrative?

They need to bring back the original cast and continue the story off of the end of transformers 2. I didn’t watch the 3rd movie because megan fox wasn’t in it. Now Shia is leaving. They need to bring back the original cast.

  • Dil Arake Veer Sing

dats great…t4…but i didnt like the idea of eliminating iron hide in the t3…infact it would be better if all of the autobots remain, in the upcoming movie…:D

yeah i hated that Jazz and ironhide were killed off and no one knows what happen to the twins mudflap and skids, They should of been killed instead of ironhide, Michael bay if you read this bring back ironhide and not kill him off again and there will be a great turn out.

    • Anonymous

I agree If your going to reboot bring back iron hide and get more crew for the auto bots and make it make scents and I want to see like in the first and second one the oh shit factor that they are gonna rip shit up lol

      • correct

they really need to stop killing off auto bots. it seemed really retarded in all da movies because the autobots are always outnumbered and bay attempted to “recreate” the original one by killin off optomus. of course ,he changed his mind. they always killen em’ off (losers)
