Michael C. Hall Signing New Deal for More DEXTER After Season 6; How Much Longer Can the Series Go?

It’s hard to believe that a weekly series about a serial killer is entering its sixth season, but that’s where we stand with Dexter.  Hall’s contract is up after season 6, which seems like a natural stopping point for a show with a finite premise.  However, Dexter is the centerpiece of Showtime’s lineup, and the network isn’t ready to let go anytime soon.  According to Variety, Hall is in negotiations for a new deal beyond season six.  It is not clear how many more seasons Showtime wants from Hall, but they will have to pay for the privilege.  Hall became an executive producer in season four, which granted him a share in ancillary revenues like DVD sales and merchandising, so his yearly income is already very large.  To extend the contract will require a major pay raise, though of course Hall deserves every penny (at least relative to the million-dollar negotiations of television).  The drama would be nothing without Hall.  Who else could sell that ironic narration?

I believe season 6, which premieres October 2, is already in the can.  And as far as I know, it is not intended to provide any closure.  So I’m up for a seventh season which ends the saga of Dexter Morgan.  But after that?  I am cynical about the potential of seasons 8-10, in which Dexter is almost caught, but gets out of trouble somehow.  Again.  What’s your cutoff point?

  1. I agree. Dexter is a great series, but these shows can only go on for so long before they get repetitive and start to feel unnecessary. I would love for the show to have another two or three great seasons, and then the showrunners should end it on a high note.

    • It’s impossible for Dexter to end on a high note. It’s third season was horribly handled. It’s comeback fifth season sputtered out in its second half.

For example other shows like The Shield was accused dragging out in sixth season. With multiple viewings and time i picked up on subtle theme of grief which for me made season 6 just as beneficial as the other seasons.

Basically all of showtime shows adapting a standard formula has set its brand back. Good thing there still HBO and AMC.

      • I admit, season 3 wasn’t Dexter’s best work. But season 5 PICKED UP in the second half. And as much as I hate the way they handled the end, with Lumen leaving, I feel like it was necessary to set up the Dexter they’re bringing back for season 6. No more Rita to bring out his human side; no more Lumen to share his secret with; just his primal instinct.
Although I’m seriously hoping Deb finds out this season. She almost did last season, and she seems to have a small passenger of her own, so I feel like that is the logical place to go next for the Dexter writers.

      • I totally agree with James. Season 5 was needed all the way through. After Rita you had to handle the season like that.

And George, – “Basically all of showtime shows adapting a standard formula has set its brand back. Good thing there still HBO and AMC”.
Seriously, Weeds is different every year and it stays fresh if you can deal with change, most people can’t. Californication is hands down the best written show on TV right now and the acting is just as amazing. And Nurse Jackie is hilarious. It may be more of a drama IMO but when they Joke around its funnier than anything, except Always Sunny.

Please anyone who reads this give Californication a chance, you will thank me.

  2. Dexter has always been an incredible show, even in its few missteps it’s worlds better than most other television shows out there. As long as they can maintain that level of quality I’m happy to keep watching, but unfortunately things can’t go on forever.

I still think the show has a lot of life left in it, and so at least a few more seasons are welcome, however, I do want them to end it on a satisfying high note, which means not dragging it out longer than necessary. I’d like to see a really strong two or three season arc to really wrap everything up, and then let it end.

I guess my point is, as long as it remains this well done I don’t necessarily have a cut off point, I just want them to quit at the appropriate time rather than let the series degrade with sub-par storytelling. If that’s two years from now or ten years from now, I’m happy either way.

    • I have been with dexter from the start- last season wasn’t bad but it was disappointing in that it didn’t end up taking any chances-

The big event that occurred in season 4 was major but not a game changer- dexter absolutely needs a game changer this season or else it is just dragging itself on-

  3. I’ve noticed cable shows are starting to have long runs when they used to top out at around 4 or 5 seasons.6 if they’re lucky.

    Entourage – 8 seasons

Curb Your Enthusiasm – 8 going on 9 seasons

It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia – renewed for seasons 8 and 9, with the possibility of 10

Mad Men – renewed for seasons 5-6, with the possibility of 7

Weeds – is possibly getting an 8th season

    Rescue Me – 7 seasons

    The Closer – 7 seasons

  5. I think the writers can churn up something great even post-season 6.They have done well so far,and Dexter is still a one of a kind show.

  6. 7 seasons sounds good for me. Just avoid the Prison Break syndrome ( or the 24 syndrome). The show is terrific. and Dexter is a very attaching character. We need to see more Trinity killers.

I have just one request: Tell Debra to stop shouting a Fword every 2 seconds. It’s harrasing for my ears.

  7. Dexter has become the premium cable equivalent of static network show. Tune into any episode in any season, and you will see pretty much the same character engaging in pretty much the same activities. It’s House with a serial killer. It’s comforting to people to see same thing over and over again, but it’s not upper echelon television.

      • The end result is the same. There’s no focused character arc, just a different obstacle each season. Nothing changes in the grand scheme of things. It’s a glorified procedural. Even Michael C. Hall’s brilliant acting is becoming monotonous and one note.

      • Well…for my part I find that the personality of Dexter has evolved since the season 1. He became more and more “human”. Thus, putting himself into very compromising situations. His struggling with his conscience was a very interesting development in the plot.
        It is just me. ^^

  8. LOVE the show DEXTER! Its my favorite of all the shows. BUT I am worried that this will splatter out like LOST did. Just heartbreaking that was.
If theyre gonna drag out a few new series, I wanna see it go out with a fantastic Bang!
And I would like to see a story ark that spans the new series, with a proper cliffhanger after 6. Shame the Trinity killer series ended with a bang, but series 5 almost ignored that ending, I wanted to see Vengiance or something hi octane. Though the Lumen thing was interesting, kinda like a Batman & Robin scenario. Ideally if they do more, there will only be ONE big killer that spans a few series. Rather than have a killer PER series which will get old fast.

I want Dexter to have an ending worthy of its greatness.

  9. Showtime has kept Weeds going well past it’s expiration date, and the quality has clearly suffered. I just hope the Dexter writers have a bit more dexterity than the Weeds folks.

    • I agree. I quit Weeds a few seasons back. The writers for Dexter need to let Debra in on his dark passenger. At least the show is better than the series of books. They deminished after the third book.
