Sidney Kimmel Entertainment has been announced as the co-financier and co-producer of the comedic melodrama Mr. Morgan’s Last Love. Written and directed by Sandra Nettlebeck (Helen), the film stars Michael Caine as a retired, lonely American widower who shares a chance encounter with a free-spirited young French woman which brightens his life. The film is based on the novel La Douceur Assassine by Françoise Dorner. The cast also includes Clémence Poésy (Harry Potter), Justin Kirk (Weeds), Jane Alexander (The Cider House Rules), Anne Alvaro (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly), and Gillian Anderson (The X-Files).
LOS ANGELES, CA, NOVEMBER 14, 2011 –Sidney Kimmel Entertainment will co-finance and co-produce “Mr. Morgan’s Last Love,” starring two time Academy Award winner Michael Caine, it was announced by SKE President Jim Tauber.
Adapted from the novel “La Douceur Assassine” by Françoise Dorner, the comedic melodrama is being directed by German writer/director Sandra Nettlebeck (“Helen,” starring Ashley Judd; “Mostly Martha,” which was remade as “No Reservations” stateside). Nettlebeck wrote the screenplay.
German production companies Bavaria Pictures, Kaminski Stiehm Film and Senator Film will co-produce with the Belgium-based Scope Pictures and Sidney Kimmel Entertainment, in association with Elzevir Films of France. Sidney Kimmel will also produce.
SKE reps domestic distribution of “Mr. Morgan’s Last Love.” Foreign pre-sales are handled by Bavaria Film International.
The film which started shooting in Paris earlier this week also stars Clémence Poésy (127 Hours, In Bruges, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire); Justin Kirk (Weeds, Life Happens); four-time Oscar nominee Jane Alexander (The Ring, The Ciderhouse Rules); César-award winner Anne Alvaro (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, The Taste of the Others); and Golden Globe winner Gillian Anderson (The X-Files).
Set in Paris, “Mr. Morgan’s Last Love” is the bittersweet story of a retired, lonely American widower (Caine) whose chance encounter with a free-spirited and vibrantly naive, beautiful young French woman brightens his life. Together they share a precious moment, which not only touches their hearts, but changes their lives.
SKE has been aggressively pursuing production and co-financing deals throughout 2011, which, including “Mr. Morgan’s Last Love,” may result in a total of five motion picture releases in 2012, including the January release of “One for the Money,” starring Katherine Heigl, produced with Lakeshore Entertainment, for release by Lions Gate Entertainment; “Gone,” with Heitor Dahlia directing and Amanda Seyfried starring, produced with Lakeshore Entertainment and Summit Entertainment will open in February; the Taylor Hackford directed “Parker,” starring Jason Statham and Jennifer Lopez, produced with Sierra/Affinity, and Incentive Filmed Entertainment to be released by FilmDistrict in the fall, and “The Place Beyond the Pines,” directed by Derek Cianfrance, starring Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper and Eva Mendes will likely have a fall release.
It was also recently announced that SKE will begin production in February on “I, Frankenstein,” starring Aaron Eckhart. The film will be produced with Lakeshore Entertainment, to be released by Lionsgate Entertainment.
