Michael Cera on an ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT Movie – ‘I don’t think it will happen for awhile’

michael_cera_image.jpgI am literally at 28,000 feet as I type these words. The reason for that is I’m flying back to Los Angeles from the international junket for Sony’s upcoming comedy “Year One” and my plane has internet. How amazing is technology.

Anyway, just a few hours ago I participated in a roundtable interview with Michael Cera as a reporter for our partner website Omelete. In the coming days I’ll have video interviews with Michael Cera, Jack Black, David Cross and director Harold Ramis. But with everyone clamoring for info on the “Arrested Development” movie, I figured you’d like to hear what he said right now. Unfortunately, the news is not good.

When I asked Michael if he thought the “Arrested Development” movie would ever happen, his response was:

“I think it will. Yeah. I don’t see why it wouldn’t. I don’t think it will happen for awhile.”

I then said a lot of the cast members have said Mitch is working on the script and maybe you’d be shooting later this year.

Michael then replied, “But there is no rush. I think he should take his time. I know it means a lot to Mitch. There is no rush, really. I don’t think.”

So if you were excited the film would be going in front of the cameras sometime soon, it’s probably time to extinguish that dream. As a huge fan of the show, I’m more than happy to wait for writer/director Mitch Hurwitz to get it right. I just hope it’ll eventually happen.

If you’re excited for the “Arrested Development” movie, say it in the comments below. And come back later this week to hear what his AD co-star David Cross said about the upcoming movie.

  1. I am sooo looking forward to this movie! I discovered AD through the DVDs a year after the show had been cancelled. The show was truly brilliant, and although I do hate to wait, I am glad that they seem to be taking their time to get things right. So many people are happily anticipating this movie, and I think they'd all be happy to wait a year or two longer for a GREAT movie… perhaps even a GREAT movie that leads to sequels, hmm?

  3. I caught up on all eps. on Hulu.com and fell in love with the show. A piece of me will be incomplete if this movie is never done.

  5. We're supposed to take his word that it won't be for a while? As I recall, he was the one holding out fome being cast. "I don’t think it will happen for awhile.” he said. I wouldn't call this kid an expert on film production. And "Year One looks like this years "Love Guru" – shit on toast.

  7. Just like stephen said, i watched all the eps. on Hulu. I just love the show. It is birriliant and funny. I would love too see the movie. I wish it would come sooner, but i also dont want it to suck. if mitch needs more time to get it just right, i say go for it. i will see it no matter when it comes out. even if it comes out (God forbidd, they would all be so old) 2030. michael was funny on the show, but does anyone else feel like he doesnt want to make the film? just asking

  9. I'm looking forward to the movie. I hope Hurwitz takes his time on writing so that it's better than the end of the series. The last 6 episodes are almost unwatchable. The stink of desperation and that terrible "MR.F" story line ruined the series for me. The original season was still the best.

  11. I agree on the Mr. F stuff Cat but the series finale 4 episode run was pretty epic IMO. For you all that discovered the show on DVD or Hulu I wish you saw it when it was on FOX it may have then hung around a bit longer.

  15. I've seen the complete series 3 times now, and can't wait to start the 4th. As for Michael Cera, let's just say he's not getting any brownie points with me :p But in all seriousness, Mitch should definitely take his time and make this the best experience for fans. And I disagree that the 3rd season is the worst. Sure the Rita storyline wasn't the best thing they ever did, but it still managed to bring plenty of laughs. Also, the last 4 episodes are incredible… ah hell, the whole series is incredible!

  17. Great news… kinda — in that Mitch wants a great film just like us fans. Watched this show way back in '03, and fell in love with it instantly. If this can come out around the Hobbit films, 2011/2012 will be one hell of a year — for me at least ^_^.

As far as the Mr. F stuff, yeah, it was definitely politically incorrect, but I found it to be absolutely hilarious nonetheless, especially the part with "Tiny Town".

GOB: "It'll work if they squint — god knows they're squinters!" (referring to Japanese investors).

  19. I say let Mitch take his time and get some of the other writers that worked on the show to help with the script. Take your time Mitch, get it right and we'll all still go see it even if its a year from now.

I wouldnt believe anything Michael Cera says. It might even be misdirection. Although mice usually work best for that.

  21. I do not watch shows on Fox as a general rule, because I like people and want to save the Earth. However, I recall that I watched one episode when it was on and found it bizarre and unwatchable.
About a month ago, I started watching it from the beginning on Fancast/Hulu and have now finished through season two. I've quite become a fan. I find that running two episodes at a time (about 50 minutes) is best. Because of the quick cutting, one episode goes by too fast. If I try a third episode, my concentration begins to fade a bit.
The chemistry between the cast members and the narrator is just terrific. It is the best ensemble cast since Seinfeld.
Yes, I'm excited about the movie.

  23. Arrested Development is by far one of the best things to ever come to television. A movie just has to happen, whether it be sooner or later.

  25. i have been waiting for this for so long… and ive heard rumors that michael cera is the only cast member that is not being entirely cooperative. very upsetting. anyways, hope it happens sooner rather than later.

  27. if michael cera is a problem when it comes to shooting this movie (like ive heard rumors about also) they could just say he was sent to the milford academy and was never "seen nor heard" from again : )
