Most actors who sign on to Marvel movies have to sign multi-picture deal so that the studio doesn’t have to keep negotiating every time they want the actor in sequels and crossovers. The only exception is if you have prestige. Ant-Man needed a prestigious actor like Michael Douglas more than he needed them, and so he only signed on to play Hank Pym for one film. I was a little worried that this meant Pym would turn out to be villain like Robert Redford’s Alexander Pierce in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but thankfully this wasn’t the case. I’m also thankful that Douglas is open to the possibility of returning for future Marvel movies.

Speaking to Yahoo! Movies UK, Douglas said:

“I’m not signed up to anything more. I’ve learned a whole lot and would look forward to more if it comes my way but if not I’ve enjoyed the experience. Now that I understand a bit more about Hank Pym too. I think in this one I had to carry a lot of plot and exposition. In the next one I hope things get a little more bizarre… the Quantum Realm!”

I agree with Douglas that there’s a lot of places for Hank Pym to go, especially since [spoilers ahead for Ant-Man] Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) was able to return from the Quantum Realm, which means Janet Van Dyne might still be alive. Hank Pym might not want anything to do with the Avengers, but if his wife is out there and he’s willing to give his daughter the Wasp suit, then there’s definitely room for him in the story. I hope that when Ant-Man 2 finally comes along, they take advantage of Douglas to make him more than an exposition machine.

Do you want to see more Hank Pym in Ant-Man 2? Do you want to see him show up before then?  Sound off in the comments section.
