Michael Jackson’s Estate Shops Biopic of the King of Pop

     November 15, 2011

In a move that surprises no one, the estate of the late Michael Jackson has begun shopping a biopic to interested parties. Now that the trial of Jackson’s former caregiver Dr. Conrad Murray is over, estate executor John Branca has talked to Ivan Reitman and Tom Pollock of the Montceito Picture Company regarding the feasibility of a memorial film for the King of Pop. Showblitz reports that the project would not be all-encompassing, but would cover certain portions of Jackson’s life. Pollock confirmed that the discussion has taken place, but there is no deal as of yet. Jackson’s estate has not provided a comment. Hit the jump for more.

michael-jackson-imageWith the death of such a globally recognizable cultural icon as Michael Jackson, a biopic was inevitable. (If Steve Jobs rightfully gets a biopic, Jackson should be equally deserving.) These stories are not always told in the best light, as was the case in the 2004 VH1 original Man in the Mirror: The Michael Jackson Story, which aired with Jackson’s child sexual abuse scandal fresh on viewers’ minds.

However, Jackson wasn’t just a voice on a recording or a dancer moonwalking through a music video; he was no stranger to films himself. With the feature The Wiz under his belt and the iconic Thriller TV short (and the less iconic Captain EO short), as well as guest roles in Men in Black II and The Simpsons, Jackson ranged across all forms of media.

It will be interesting to see what portions of his life Jackson’s estate highlights (his childhood, music and stardom, to be sure) and which they sweep under the rug (the scandals, the physical transformation, the nature of his death). Regardless of what hits the editing room floor, fans of all ages will flock to see the King of Pop one last time.

I would love to see movie about Michael Jackson. It really needs to have a great actor though. Not just someone who kind of looks like Michael because of make up but someone who can capture Michael’s spirit. I can see Johnny Depp playing Michael. I see similar qualities in their personalities already. And I trust Johnny would capture the innocence a child like personality along with the musical genious and visionary part.

“I can see Johnny Depp playing Michael.”

You must give me the name of your oculist.

I agree. A movie about Michael Jackson should be done with the utmost care to capture his genius and humanity. And, yes, the actor will need to be par excellence. I look forward to seeing such a movie one day. I don’t believe this one will be it yet, though I’ll welcome this biopic. Michael’s life was large. The truth about Michael Jackson that has been suppressed is now coming to light, thankfully. There will be a lot to learn about him for many years to come. He is history, he is legend.

    @ Marcela

I would love to NOT see a movie about Michael Jackson. It DOESN’T need a great actor, Roman Polanski will do.

Who looks like Michael Jackson? … seriously… what?… Johnny Depp? I think you need a new eye glass prescription. Further, are you saying that Johnny likes to get a little of that Pedobear action? Shame on you, he is a decent human being.

Marcela, please keep your misguided opinions to yourself.

Shopped it to Montecito Pictures? What was the last movie that came out of that company that ANYONE thought, “Hmm I enjoyed that.” Don’t bring UP IN THE AIR into consideration, that was just family ties, Ivan got lucky that he has a talented son.

At one point the Jackson estate had this thought: “Who would treat our relative with decency and respect… OH I KNOW the guys that made ROAD TRIP and HOTEL FOR DOGS.” A slap would be a good remedy to this thought.

Only one word could describe the outcome of this relationship, disaster. I take that back, travesty might be a better word.

Everyone should do themselves a favor and throw Thriller up on your iTunes and enjoy a period in which Michael was a god.

It’s true that a biopic about Michael Jackson will be difficult to pull off if they attempt to use look-alikes becuase of Jackson’s surgery and skin whitening condition (Vitiligo – look it up!). The awful tabloid-like ‘Man In The Mirror’ film tried to do this with Flex Alexander in the lead role and it was truely the worst thing I have ever seen. In fact I only watched half of it.
However, if they’re clever they could do this quite well. They just need to think. Do they need somebody to attempt to impersonate Michael Jackson at each stage of his life specifically? No, they just need an excellent character actor who can get into the role and bring out the personal struggles with fame, surgery, illness and addiction to pain meds. The person doesn’t need to look like Michael Jackson. he doesn’t need to impersonate him. A character as complex as Michael Jackson is a great opportunity for the right actor.

Don’t know why everyone’s still so upset over this. The Michael Jackson I knew and worshipped died over 25 years ago.

    • Troll Detector

Correction, I didn’t mean the Michael Jackson I knew and worshipped died over 25yrs ago, I meant that the young Michael Jackson changed, changed into a more beloved human being that only wanted to help the world become a better place. I miss the younger and older Michael Jackson, I just simply miss him terribly. I love you Michael Joseph Jackson.

      • Troll Detector

Haha, I see what you did there in your own awkward, oddly worded and none-too-bright way!

      • Troll Detector

Opps, once again sorry, I didn’t mean “none-too-bright” I meant to say “Oh-so-right” way.

I liked this movie when it was called ” The Jackson’s an American Dream, an it was like seven hours and would run over and over agin on VH1 and it told his whole story from childhood

  • Tarek

even dead, they continue to milk him…

  • mjfan

Johhny Depp? Is that a joke? Here’s an idea, since Michael was black how about they find a black actor to play him!!! Ppl are stupid, that’s ridiculous! There are plenty of talented black actors out there, I’d like to se more of them images of all these white guys that think they’re better than everyone! Get real!
