Michael Keaton, Emma Stone, Zach Galifianakis, and Naomi Watts Set for Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s BIRDMAN

     March 5, 2013

Director Alejandro González Iñárritu (Babel, Amores Perros) has assembled quite the cast for his upcoming comedy Birdman.  The film centers on an actor who once played an iconic superhero, and now faces troubles with his ego and family as he prepares to mount a Broadway play in a bid to reclaim past glory.  Though Iñárritu’s previous work veers on the heavy drama side of things, he’s nabbed some top-notch comedic talent to bring this lighter film to fruition as Michael Keaton, Emma Stone, Naomi Watts, and Zach Galifianakis have been enlisted to topline the pic.  Hit the jump for more.

Alejandro-Gonzalez-Inarritu-birdmanPer Heat Vision, Keaton is set to play the lead role of the washed up comic book movie actor in Birdman, which is an absolutely brilliant piece of casting.  Keaton is a crazy-gifted comedic actor and I can’t wait to see what he does under the direction of Iñárritu with such a self-referential premise.  As for the other castmembers, Stone will play Keaton’s daughter fresh out of rehab and now working as his assistant, Watts (who starred in Iñárritu’s 21 Grams) is set as an actress in the play, and Galifianakis is poised to portray the production’s “conniving producer.”

Iñárritu still has to cast the play’s leading man and Keaton’s ex-wife, but the hope is to begin filming in early April.  Stone will obviously have to work around her schedule on the now-filming The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but this is incredibly promising lineup thus far.  It’ll be interesting to see what a “comedy’ from Iñárritu looks like, though I assume the film will have its fair share of drama as well.  Keaton recently wrapped the villain role in the Robocop remake and Galifianakis will next be seen this May in The Hangover Part III.  Watts, meanwhile, is coming off a Best Actress Oscar nomination for her work in The Impossible.
