Opening up tomorrow is “Lions for Lambs,” the first film directed by Robert Redfordsince“The Legend of Bagger Vance.”

In “Lions for Lambs,” the story begins after two determined students at a

West Coast University, Arian (Derek Luke) and Ernest (Michael Pena), follow the inspiration of their idealistic professor, Dr. Malley (Robert Redford), and attempt to do something important with their lives. But when the two make the bold decision to join the battle in Afghanistan, Malley is both moved and distraught. Now, as Arian and Ernest fight for survival in the field, they become the string that binds together two disparate stories on opposite sides of America. In California, an anguished Dr. Malley attempts to reach a privileged but disaffected student (Andrew Garfield) who is the very opposite of Arian and Ernest. Meanwhile, in Washington D.C. the charismatic Presidential hopeful, Senator Jasper Irving (Tom Cruise), is about to give a bombshell story to a probing TV journalist (Meryl Streep) that may affect Arian and Ernest’s fates. As arguments, memories and bullets fly, the three stories are woven ever more tightly together, revealing how each of these Americans has a profound impact on each other and the world.

So to help promote the film, the other day I got to interview two of the stars – Michael Pena and Andrew Garfield. When you start to watch the video, the thing to know is, as I walked in to start this interview I heard a camera person say, “if one more person asks about Robert Redford…” Basically they had been doing press interviews for hours and all people were asking about was working for Redford.

Needless to say, I was going to ask about working with Redford since he did direct the movie and it’s his first film in seven years. But after I heard the person say that I changed my questions… see if you can notice. And if you missed the movie clips from “Lions For Lambs” you can click here to watch them.

Finally, I was also provided a 4 minute clip from the movie and that’s posted below the interview. The sound wasn’t mixed right but I tried to fix it. You may have to adjust the volume for the quieter scenes.

Michael Peña and Andrew Garfield

  • Robert Redford talk

  • What was the most difficult part of making the movie?

  • What brought them to the project – was it Redford or the script or the other actors?

  • Michael talks about Pinkville (his upcoming project with Oliver Stone) and The Lucky Ones

  • Andrew talks about Boy A and he tells me that he’s doing Terry Gilliam’s new movie The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus, but he wouldn’t tell me the plot. He did say Tom Waits and Heath Ledger are in it.
