Now playing in limited release is director Peter Sollett‘s (Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist) feature adaptation of Cynthia Wade‘s 2007 Oscar-winning short Freeheld. The film tells the story of New Jersey police lieutenant Laurel Hester in her fight on two fronts: one against cancer, and one to make sure her pension benefits would be given to her same-sex domestic partner, Stacie Andree, after passing away. Freeheld stars Julianne Moore as Hester alongside Ellen Page as Andree. Michael Shannon, Steve Carell, Josh Charles and Luke Grimes also star.

At the press day for the film I sat down with Michael Shannon for a video interview. He talked about memorable moments from filming, the way he likes to work on set, trying to make the film natural and real, and if he’s seen Jeff Michols' Midnight Special, which he calls a thriller with a science fiction element. Here’s what he had to say:

-

Michael Shannon:

  • How the story felt natural and real and not “Hollywoodized”.
  • Memorable moments from filming.
  • How does he like to work on set and has it changed during his career.
  • Has he seen Midnight Special yet?
