Michelle Monaghan is in negotiations to co-star alongside Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis in director Todd Phillips’ new comedy, “Due Date”. The actress will portray Downey Jr.’s pregnant wife in the film; a reunion of sorts for the pair that last shared the screen in 2005’s “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang”. Details after the jump.
Here at Collider one of our favorite films of the last five years is Shane Black’s “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang”. If you’ve never seen this movie you must stop reading, go to your Netflix queue and order it right now. I’ll wait. OK. Now, until you actually watch the movie you won’t get a sense of why I’m excited at this casting news so just play along.
It is rare for an actress to be able to hold her own with the likes of Robert Downey Jr. onscreen, comedically or otherwise. Monaghan not only held her own with “Iron Man” in “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang”, she also emerged from her role as Harmony as an actress to watch – for those of us who were watching, that is. Any film that is going to conjure memories of the magic that Monaghan and Downey made in “Kiss Kiss” is a movie that I want to see.
Of course, as a Todd Phillips fan I already had “Due Date” on my “want to see” list. The director’s first film after his monster success on “The Hangover” had me pretty much sold at the words “New Todd Phillips Comedy.” This latest piece of casting just adds to my already high expectations. Warner Brothers also has big expectations for “Due Date”. The studio has set November 10, 2010 for the film’s domestic release.
Here’s a synopsis to get us all on the same page:
Director Todd Phillips re-teams with his break-out Hangover star Zach Galifianakis for this road movie concerning a soon-to-be father (played by Robert Downey Jr.) and his cross-country trip to make it back in time for his baby’s birth — with the only roadblock being the dubious passenger (Galifianakis) who’s along for the ride.
