Universal has released a new Minions trailer.  The film functions as an origin story as we see how the minions have inadvertently proven to be the downfall of history’s conquerors ranging from the T-Rex to Genghis Khan to Napoleon.  The Despicable Me spin-off follows three lovable minions—Kevin, Stuart, and Bob—as they seek to serve a new supervillain in the 1960s.

This trailer is incredibly promising since it now only introduces us to the film's human lead, supervillain Scarlet Overkill (voiced by Sandra Bullock), but also shows off the creativity that was sorely lacking from Despicable Me 2.  I love the concept of "Villain-Con", and the minions have lost none of their cuteness.

Watch the trailer below, via Illumination.  The film opens in 3D on July 10th, and also features the voices of Jon Hamm, Allison Janney, Michael Keaton, and Steve Coogan.

Here's the official synopsis for Minions:

The story of Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment’s Minions begins at the dawn of time. Starting as single-celled yellow organisms, Minions evolve through the ages, perpetually serving the most despicable of masters. After accidentally killing off so many of them—from T. rex to Napoleon—the Minions find themselves without a master to serve and fall into a deep depression. Featuring a soundtrack of hit music from the ’60s that still permeates our culture today, Minions is produced by Illumination’s Chris Meledandri and Janet Healy, and is directed by Pierre Coffin and Kyle Balda. Brian Lynch has written the screenplay for the 3D-CG comedy adventure, and Chris Renaud serves as executive producer of the film.
