First Trailer for Tarsem Singh’s MIRROR MIRROR Starring Julia Roberts

by Adam Chitwood    Posted:November 15th, 2011 at 3:35 pm

Fresh off the first trailer for the battle-heavy Snow White and the Huntsman, Relativity has released the first look at their take on Snow White, Mirror Mirror. Directed by Tarsem Singh, the fantasy film is described as a “comedic adventure”and centers on Snow White (Lily Collins) setting out to reclaim her birthright from the Evil Queen (Julia Roberts). Mirror Mirror couldn’t be more different from Huntsman. It’s light, fluffy, and goofy. It’s also pretty close to terrible. The film almost comes off as a farce, it’s just so incredibly goofy. It’s as if Adam Sandler‘s Happy Madison decided to make a Snow White movie. With Tarsem at the helm, we’re sure to be in for a visual treat, but I fear the tone may painfully overshadow the extravagant visuals.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer for yourself. The film also stars Armie Hammer, Nathan Lane, and Sean Bean.

Here’s the official synopsis for Tarsem Singh’s Mirror Mirror:

In Relativity’s Mirror Mirror starring Oscar®-winner Julia Roberts and breakout star Lily Collins (The Blind Side), an evil Queen (Roberts) steals control of a kingdom, and an exiled princess (Collins) enlists the help of seven resourceful rebels to win back her birthright in a spirited adventure comedy filled with jealousy, romance, and betrayal that will capture the imagination of audiences the world over.  The film also stars Armie Hammer (The Social Network) as the object of their affection, Prince Andrew Alcott, and Nathan Lane (The Birdcage) as the hapless and bungling servant to the Queen.

Yahoo trailer’s suck. They are always slow and skip all over the place, as a matter of fact it slows your (collider) whole page down. Time to get your videos elsewhere Collider.

Good gracious. What is Trasem thinking? I had such faith in you.

This looks beyond terrible. I guess I’ll be seeing SNow white and the Huntsman

  3. Sarah @

This made me cringe. Need to go watch the Snow White and the Huntsman trailer to cleanse my mind.

  4. Rukia @

Snow White and the Huntsman looks far better. Mirror Mirror has the advantage of going first I guess.

    But geez. That looked awful.

  5. Daniel @

    Good lord, that looks terrible.

    “Snow WAY!”

    Ouch.

  6. Sal @

Thanxxx it looks like great fun. Julia is awesome!!!

  7. Kody @

It definitely does not look like something adults would want to see however, I can’t see kids being that interested in it either. It looks just horrible to be honest.

  8. jymmmymack @

Visually stunning. Mentally, I’m in need of a lobotomy. Looks like I’ll be seeing no Snow White films next year…

  9. Strong Enough @

I guess we haven’t learned our lesson eh? Never trust trailers. the fact that people can sit here and say Snow white and the huntsman is going to be better than this is fooling themselves. you ppl see armor and swords and think “WOW this is amazing!” smh.

  10. Ingy @

This is going to be so FUN!!!!! I’m excited :) I can’t wait to see more!

  11. Matt @

Snow White and the Huntsman looks just interesting enough to make me want to see it and you can’t go wrong with Charlize Theron as your evil queen. I get this one is for kids but I doubt young children will find any humor in this. Armie Hammer looks like the creepy uncle instead of the love interest. I can’t believe he signed on for this sinking ship. Wow!

  12. BOFF @

Wow! I’ve seen actual shit that actually looked less like shit than this film!
Hollywood, gimme your money next time, I’ll show you how to make a good movie!

  13. Alex-- @

Damn, pretty much the only good thing was the possible musical piece at the start.

  14. Prasanna @

‘Snow white and Huntsman’ trailer was so much better. Julia Roberts is just acting like ‘Tinker Hell’. I am glad I will save some money skipping this.

  15. Lois @

Another trailer with hardly any snow white in it – why aren’t people crying ‘oh it must be because Lily Collins is crappppp’

Julia looks like the weakest link here, and it just looks clunky.

The reaction has been very poor, i bet they will be editing that trailer pretty fast lol

  16. SaadGKhan @

#MIRRORMIRROR looks terrible, #KirstenStewart wins the promo battle with 3SnowwhiteandtheHunstman Yay :)

  17. burntcopper @

    …The Disney version. Yay.

This would’ve been cute if I hadn’t seen the very, very shiny and awesome visuals that’s Snow White and the Huntsman. I’m going for the LOTR version. as it is, I’ll pay money to see Kristen Stewart and wait for Julia Roberts on a rainy Christmas afternoon when I’ve overdosed on sugar.

  18. pills_26 @

Christ, I couldn’t even get through the whole trailer, I had to stop it half way.

Let’s hope the movie ends up less “Jack and Jill” and more “Princess Bride”. Please let it stop at just being a horrible trailer.

But for now, I think the cards are on Snow White and the Huntsmen, even if it’s just a shameless take off of LOTR/The Hobbit.

  19. Christine @

I love the fashion in this movie! Everybody is so goofy, I am so tired of over the years so many people try to make the fairy tales so dark and twisted, and I think this take can be really refreshing and cute! Love Nathan Lane to death!

  20. Emma @

Wow. What a horrible trailer. There’s no reason to compare this to the other movie because they are obviously aimed at different audiences, but this one, on its own, is awful. This thing is just all over the place with the type of movie it wants to be. Whoever put this trailer together needs to find a new job.

Tarsem’s only strength is his visuals and they don’t even look that great here. This thing looks like a hot mess.

  21. Tracey @

I liked the trailer. I’m not sure why everyone wants to be all dark and depressing. Isn’t it enough that every headline and newscast lately is dark and depressing? I for one am looking forward to something light and fun. My only concern would be that it’s that Sing director that did The Cell. Can he pull off funny? Dunno. But Julia Roberts looks pretty funny in this.

    • whatever @

It’s painfully apparent that the studio has their stooges out jamming the message boards to try and pump up this +urd. What is interesting is I think this time the studio behind the other version of this worn out fairy tale appears to be doing some jamming as well. How often do you see this many comments on a collider post? A handful of these comments look legit. It’s like a bunch of robots talking to answering machines in an empty room.

  22. MR @

    they have removed the trailer.

    • Emma @

It was probably removed because it’s so terrible. lol I just read a couple of tweets that summed this trailer up perfectly. One said it looks like an ABC Family Channel movie and the other talked about it looking like it’s from the Hallmark Channel. Perfect descriptions.

  23. MR @

    watched it on yhaoo.

    pretty crap
weak for singh such visual style.
we knew it be very comedy based tho but still looks silly

  24. jo @

looks ok. it looks like something you can take your kids to go see.

  25. Michael @

I say let’s give it a chance before we make snap judgements. It seems to have a ‘Princess Bride’ vibe and that is one of my favorite fantasy movies put to screen. Although, one minus from the trailer is that ‘Bride’ did have a warm-hearted love story. This seems to be more along the lines of ‘The Three Amigos’ trying to spoof a western (although that is a favorite of mine as well).

  26. Nick @

Looks kinda bad to me, yet a little intriguing at the same time. Hammer looks like he has some comedy chops, his delivery on “You can rub my TUMMY!” was perfect.

  27. 3rsSt @

Wow…..you’re right. This looks BAD. Oh my. I love Julia but campy broad comedy is NOT her forte. She even drops her thin English accent during the trailer! Yikes. I’ll bypass this one. Snow White and the Huntsman however looks terrific. I’d like to see more fairy tales done in a serious, darker way. People forget that BEFORE Disney arrived on the scene (which wasn’t all that long ago), fairy tales were VERY dark tales that rarely had “happy” endings. They existed as folklore to teach children lessons.

  28. Ryan @

SWATH: Has a bad British accent from Charlize Theron (even though she is EXTREMELY HOT), has Kristen Stewart, and is directed by a nobody who has no movies to base credibility. But Chris Hemsworth ooks good and it has a great cast for the Dwarves.

Mirror Mirror: Julia Roberts (enough said), looks way too ridiculous, and has way too many corny one-liners. On the other hand, it is by an established director that has at least one, maybe two good movies, has Sean Bean and Nathan Lane, and Lily Collins looks great.

So basically, they both could be crap. But, they both could be good. We don’t know just based on the trailers or the cast.

  29. Henry @

The Hunger Games will masacre this movie so bad

  30. Mags @

Wow couldn’t look more awful! Huntsmen looks like he best movie ever compared to this….

  31. Joe @

Why not just remove all the other dialogue from the trailer and keep only Julia Roberts’? It sure seems like she was the only one talking the entire time!

  32. terry @

Talking about phoning it in on Roberts’s part.
This shit looks beyond stupid. It is just a fluff piece for Julia to show how hammy she can be.
    I’ll pass.

  33. zootcatchy @

it’s funny how you all can judge just for one trailer.

I liked it a lot though! Julia was funny, Lily was just adorable and ARMIE OMG – PRINCE CHARMING! (puppy love!!)

I love that this is gonna be a real fairytale, not pretentious ‘serious’ crap that turns out like twilight (especially starring kstew).
this is gonna be funny and adorable (I hope like ‘Stardust’ and ‘Princess Bride’), I can’t see no ‘dark twist’ yet, but it’s only the first trailer.
Cast is awesome, everyone fit their roles, visuals are really stunning and different from anything other (thanks to Tarsem).

    TARSEM CAN DO NO WRONG.

  34. whatever @

The funny thing about this utterly $hitty movie is that ugly, old and utterly talentless Julia Roberts is wearing some kind of fake nose because, y’know, she is so naturally beautiful that no one would buy her as an ugly, old queen. Julia was attractive for around 6 months about 20 years ago before transitioning directly to the horsefaced crone hollywood has been shoving down our throats ever since. Honestly, does anyone out there, anyone at all, actually enjoy seeing Julia Roberts? She looks like an over the hill transvestite and she acts like a smug cow with a massive sense of entitlement. There are genuinely talented character actresses out there (legions of them) who are actually funny and can actually act – why do we have to keep seeing Julia Roberts? Enough.

  35. Rick @

Wow…just…wow. That looks like a complete piece of shit. Maybe it’s just the trailer, but that made me feel like I was physically ill. I kept expecting it to stop hurting me, but I guess that was asking too much.

  36. Tarek @

I told you this Tarsem Singh is the next Shyamalamanalan

  37. Michael @

I felt my stomach knot up as I was watching this. It was that bad.

  38. PowerGlove @

It does look over the top. But, IMHO, it looks over the top in a good way. Haven’t seen Huntsman trailer, so can’t compare. However, I do love Tarsem and it’s great to see Julia in a non-traditional role; so, I’ll save my judgement till I see it. There’s nothing I hate more than snap judgement. I prefer to open my mind and enjoy.

  40. LP @

Once you get past the crappy music, and the over reliance on Julia Roberts, and the obvious stab at being “cute”, and the overscored musical choices, there are some good stuff in there. They should have emphasized the live-action fantasy aspect of this movie and less of the jokey bits. And Lily Collins looks extra cute in the little cuts that they had of her. Should have focused more on that.

  41. your mom @

I never thought I’d say this, but the Tarsem Singh movie looks like shit compared to the unknown director of SW&tH.

  42. Frank @

I could not finish the trailer. Stopped watching it mid-way through. Oddly, it feels over-long for a typical trailer — I keep thinking, “my God how long is this awfulness running?”

I get that they’re going for an Ella Enchanted style, but this feels way too forced with the cute and quirk. (Hell, they should have cast Zooey Deschanel as Snow.) I like Tarsem’s work generally speaking, but man — I’ll watch the K-Stew version instead. Charlize Theron in that version is more appealing.

  43. Wladi @

This movie was great till the moment some retard casting director hired julia horse-face roberts…everything else looks perfect especially Lilly Collins as Snow White…really cute….

  44. Vigo @

When’s Terry Gilliam’s Snow White film coming out? This trailer doesn’t look all that bad it’s got it’s moments of cringing (random media references). But looks like it’s in the tradition of Princess Bride, Stardust. Has a bit of Time Bandits in it (hence why I asked when Terry Gilliam’s version is coming out). It leans onto the border of the classic Jim Henson films ( The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, MirrorMask). I’d love to see a collaboration between Prachett and either Singh or Branagh. Now that the dreaded Harry Potter series (with the exception of Prisioner Of Azkeban and Deathly Hollows Part I) is over time for true fantasy films to be made!

  45. ti @

    THEY’RE FILMING MIDGETS!

  46. Sugreev2001 @

Mirror Mirror on the wall, which is the gayest movie of them all ?

  47. Sara @

I think this movie looks hilarious, especially because Julia Roberts and Lily Collins are awesome! Can’t wait to see this when it comes out in March!!

  48. Rebecca @

My boyfriend and I are definitely gonna be seeing it in theaters! Can’t wait!

  49. Lana @

I love Julia Roberts so much! She’s an amazing actress and looks so good as the Evil Queen!
