MISS MEADOWS Trailer Positions Katie Holmes as a Prim Vigilante Serial Killer

     August 20, 2014

To me, for better and for worse, this feels like the kind of quirky dark comedy we were getting on the regular back between 1999 and 2004.  Now, not so much.  Which is to say that this trailer for Miss Meadows is simultaneously refreshing and stale.  For what it’s worth I’m definitely interested in seeing this, I’ll take a formula I haven’t seen in a while over a formula I’m exposed to every day.  And I happen to think Katie Holmes is a strong performer who took herself off the scene right before she started getting really interesting roles.   The film is written directed by Karen Leigh Hopkins, who directed the apparently abysmal Because I Said So, but I will hold out a sliver of hope regardless.

In Miss Meadows Holmes plays a sweet and proper elementary school teacher whose perfect manners and pretty floral dresses hide a dark secret: when she’s not teaching at the local elementary school or tending to her garden, she’s moonlighting as a gun-toting vigilante.  The film also stars James Badge Dale, Mary Kay Place and Jean Smart.  Hit the jump for the Miss Meadows trailer.  Entertainment One releases the film on November 14th.

    Joey! Still fine.

I feel like this could be one of those cases where you have a premise that doesn’t necessarily inspire a good STORY. So it could be one of those starts-well-and-collapses-in-the-third-act films, or…they actually craft a good story. We’ll see.

She seems more of a mentally unstable vigilante.

Films and filmakers who glorify/make jokes out of serial killers are, in my opion, naive and idiots. If you have ever lost someone to a serial killers it’s not funny, and I have been and am stil dealing with the consequences. The types of people who become serial killers don’t need films like this to encourage or justify the fantasy world they live in.

Hopefully my comments don’t apply to this film but if they do I truly hope this film ends up in the dollar bin at the Dollar Store.

The types of people who become serial killers don’t do so based on a movie encouraging them.

And based on the trailer she comes off as a vigilante but not a serial killer. Doesn’t seem like a dark comedy either, although I can see how they could have taken the material in that direction if they had wanted.

Hopefully this will give Holmes the showcase she needs/deserves to get her acting career back on track. So many haters out there seem to believe she came into being with her relationship with Tom Cruise completely ignoring the fact that she had already racked up an impressive resume of films like Go and Wonder Boys and The Gift and Pieces of April.

She was great in Go. Frankly I wish they had her back for Dark Knight, she was solid in Batman Begins and the recasting was distracting.

      • Bob

Totally agree. Unfortunately the whole Cruise fiasco began right before the release of Batman Begins and was used as the reason the films opening weekend gross was considered disappointing. It is believed by many it caused the recasting.
