Judging by the trailer and a new featurette for Brad Bird‘s Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) running around the outside of the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, is going to be almost as important as having a stylish hoodie.  It certainly looks like Cruise did his own stunts, which raises two questions: 1) What insurance company would cover such a risky stunt? and 2) What if he had died?  It would be a spectacular and silly death.  Yes, he would have fallen off the world’s tallest building, but at the same time, people would wonder, “Why didn’t he just use a professional—and let’s be honest—expendable stuntman?”  I guess the set piece just wouldn’t work if you had any doubt that Tom Cruise was risking his life to make an action movie.

Hit the jump to check out the featurette.  Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol opens in IMAX on December 16th and wide on December 21st.

Here’s the official synopsis for Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol:

This is not just another mission. The IMF is shut down when it’s implicated in a global terrorist bombing plot. Ghost Protocol is initiated and Ethan Hunt and his rogue new team must go undercover to clear their organization’s name. No help, no contact, off the grid. You have never seen a mission grittier and more intense than this.

  1. Tom Cruise deserves a ton of credit! This is just insane. I’ll be watching Mission for this scene. Just like i only watched transformers for the sky divers….but i actually expect a good movie from MI4 though.

  2. And if he had used a stunt-man, Matt would’ve bitched about him not being authentic. “Unlike Jackie Chan, Cruise didn’t do his own stunts because he refused to do them without his stylish hoodie.”

Look, I can make the same joke, too!

Grow up, Peter Pan. Count Chocula.

  3. I kinda think it’s not Tom. The video is not HD but I think the chin belongs to a much younger man and the legs too… and as you said which insurance company would agree to that?

    • Go youtube “Tom Cruise MI4 tallest building in the world”. You’ll find several cell-phone videos of Cruise waving at them before pushing away from the window and swinging toward the other side of the building. It’s him.

      • The featurette doesn’t mention that alot of this scene was shot on a specially reconstructed set. I’m not saying Cruise didn’t go out on the real building, I’m saying that alot of shots from the scene was shot on a set.

  4. Its to bad the third one wasnt bigger in theaters, but it had all the stigma from the god awful second one. The first is good the third is great Im very interested to see what they do with this one. Plus Bird’s first live action should be interesting forsure. Massive credit for Cruise on doing this stunt. I always gain more respect for actors when they kinda realize they are way over paid and they should man up and actually do some work on movies they are in.

  5. what a stupid synopsis. isn’t the whole point of the mission impossible concept to go undercover? so how this film is any different from the previous three? oh, i see, it’s “off the grid” now, so this time ethan hunt and his team decided to turn off their cell phones. badass.

    • The plot of the film is that Hunt is now a wanted terrorist being tracked down by most agencies of the US government. Thus why the are “off the grid.” They have no government contacts or resources.

  6. Why’s the tone so sarcastic when referring to this movie alone? I have seen countless hacky work being gushed upon with secret happenings on set and some such.

Proabably be a huge huge hit outside America.

  7. This is simply amazing. I don’t like tom cruise, but let’s face it: he is very Professional. I have more respect for actors who do themselves their stunts.

This movie will be a huge hit! Brad Bird is not Luca$, ^^
