Fourth MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE a Reboot; Won’t Be Titled “MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE IV”

New details have emerged on Brad Bird’s Mission: Impossible IV.  For starters, it won’t be called “Mission: Impossible IV“.  It may not even have “Mission: Impossible” in the title, instead opting for a title similar to what The Dark Knight was to the Batman franchise.  Of course, “The Dark Knight” is one of Batman’s many nicknames.  You also have the bat-insignia if there’s any confusion.  I don’t know how you re-title Mission: Impossible.  Do you call it, “Objective: Unworkable“?  “Goal: Impracticable”?  Do you replace the lit fuse with an egg timer?

So what is not-Mission: Impossible about?  Details are still being kept under wraps, but Variety reports that this will be a reboot of sorts for the franchise.  As we reported yesterday, Jeremy Renner will star opposite Tom Cruise and is being set up to carry the franchise for future installments (although Cruise could also return).  Variety adds that Cruise’s character Ethan Hunt will only be working with Renner’s character.  That revelation throws into question what capacity Ving Rhames‘ Luther Stickell and potentially Simon Pegg‘s Benji Dunn will play in the film.  The next Mission: Impossible/Undertaking: Insurmountably-Difficult is slated to open on December 16, 2011.

No surprise that 4th installment of Mission Impossible is gonna be a reboot. How about exploring the origins of ET, Spielberg? /sarcasm

WOAH WOAH WOAH. Now I just went from really wanting to see this to doubting it. Call it Mission Impossible for one thing. Even if you don’t do “IV” it needs a subtitle then.

As for Cruise taking a back seat, I don’t like it. He’s pretty good in these films and nobody goes to Mission Impossible to watch him cameo opposite some new guy who will be unfamiliar to anybody who didn’t see Hurt Locker. Even some who did may not recognize Renner. My best friend though Danny Trejo in Heat was a young Mickey Rourke. Not everybody is that dumb, but some are.

Keep it where Tom is front and center and call it Mission Impossible IV.

I don’t like this… yeah a reboot makes sense, but changing its name and giving someone else the lead role doesn’t. Of all the things that Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull did wrong, at least they knew that people expect Harrison Ford to star in an Indiana Jones movie, not be a supporting character for Shia LeBeouf.

Mission: Impossible is, for better or for worse, synonymous with Tom Cruise. To try to divorce those two things would be a bad move indeed. The worst part is, this doesn’t sound like a creative decision made by Brad Bird, this sounds like your typical corporate nonsense. “Well, uh, The Dark Knight made $1 billion, so we should change the name of this movie, and, uh, reboots are popular these days, so lets do that. Oh, and Tom Cruise’s last movie didn’t do very well, forget that its script was an awful piece of crap and he’s the only thing that made the movie bearable, he’s clearly not a good actor any more so we’ll just pay him lip service in our movie and hire someone else.”

there was nothing wrong with the first MI movie, the mistake was making two more that was absolute garbage, i mean MI2 was more like an action man advertisement, and MI3 was a little more watchable than 2 but not even near to MI 1 greatness.

  5. Ryan @

The mistake with the first film was turning Jim Phelps into the bad guy when he was the hero of BOTH M:I series. MI3 was good too. Making it an ensemble was a good idea so long as you know who’s at the top

I don’t think Cruise will take a back seat to anyone in this film…..this is just the sort of stuff they talk about to get everyone thinking about the movie over a year before it comes out.

Great series of movies; Hunt is one of the few characters who gets married and can keep going at the same speed. His wife ended up being quite resilient in the last one; I hope she does not end up on the ‘team’ ala True Lies…..that would be too much of a joke for the series to survive, in my mind.

By the way, Knight and Day was not a bad movie at all, when I finally went and saw it; I can’t believe how many people put it down!

I guess Maggie Q and Jonathan Rhys Meyers aren’t coming back then? Pity…they formed a cool coherent team.:)

It will be called “Tom and Jerry”.. because Tom Cruise and Jeremy Renner, ok not funny.

    Keep Tom front and center!

If they were going to do a reboot, I wish they would make it closer in tone to the television series… more of a team effort, and less a one man army sort of thing. The first film was closer to this, the second about as far from it as could be. The third film, my favorite of the three, had a good feel, but still not the same as the old series from which this is based. Just my opinion.

A true reboot would be to get rid of Tom Cruise ,and replace him.His career is over.

THANK YOU!!!! What is the point of a “reboot” with the original lead actor? Personally, I’m sick of Cruise. Renner will be great. He’s already established himself in the Hurt Locker and not to mention 28 Weeks Later. Looking forward to seeing Renner as ‘Hawkeye’ in the upcoming Avengers flick.

so it’s not a myth when they say “whenever Cruise needs money, he makes a new Mission Impossible film”…..

calm down everyone, brad bird knows what he is doing. he wouldnt just make some stupid movie for kicks. look at his other films, the iron giant, the incredibles, ratatouille. he is gonna make it great and will be better than the preceding films

Cruise has done wonders with this franchise, especially with MI:3, the best in the bunch. Hoping to see what goodies # 4 has in store.

My wife and I also thoroughly enjoyed Knight and Day.

Good action, LOTS of laughs, everything wrapped up nicely.

Cruise did an excellent job, it was a lot of fun.

Definitely the best of the action date movies that have been released lately.

  21. Damon @

It got mid 50s, half the critics enjoyed it.

So half the critics got it right. :)

No one expected Knight and Day to do well and it did $200 million world wide.

    That’s career over for you?

MI3 was the best one, I’m confident MI4 will be good.

So, Cruise still has some faithful followers out there who don’t research movies before they see them. Perhaps they go simply on name recognition alone. Let’s not forget that Cameron Diaz was in that movie as well. She deserves some of that credit also.
Nevertheless, I would like to see this movie fall more in the vein of the TV show. I seem to remember that show focusing on a team…Refer to JJ Abrams, ‘Star Trek’.

  25. Rennik @

They really just need to stop putting Cruise in movies. I like the guy’s films, but he’s dragged his own image so deeply through the mud that an M:I 4, no matter what you call it, will be mildly successful at best in U.S. theaters. M:I 4 could still make loads of money overseas, but movies like Knight and Day, for example, would make a lot more money with someone else in the lead role. Cruise’s star began flickering out somewhere between his scientology-fueled t.v. rants and the infamous couch-jumping on Oprah.
