We’ve been patiently waiting for the Mondo guys to announce the first Mondo Gallery show of 2013 for…well, actually, we’ve been expecting that announcement for weeks now (to be perfectly honest, we’d been expecting an announcement regarding the next Mondo Gallery show sometime before the end of 2012). But let’s not get hung up on timeframes and incorrect expectations: In Progress—the show opening at the Mondo Gallery on January 25th—has just been made official, and we’ve got all the pertinent details for you after the jump. You’re gonna wanna meet me there, folks.
In the interest of getting this one up and published as soon as possible, we’re going to keep this short and sweet. Here’s what’s up: a few moments ago, a Mondo-branded press release, flier, and pair of images showed up in our inbox. Let’s go through ‘em in order, starting with the jaw-dropping announcement about the show itself:
Mondo, the collectible art division of Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, announces its next gallery show, "In Progess," which will run from January 25 through February 23 at the Mondo Gallery located at 4115 Guadalupe St. in Austin, TX. The Mondo "In Progress" show will feature original sketches, concepts and line art behind some of Mondo's most iconic screen prints. Poster art enthusiasts will get a fascinating glimpse into the process of creating the beautiful imagery.
The "In Progress" show will feature original artwork from many of Mondo's distinguished artists including Martin Ansin, Ken Taylor, Kevin Tong, Jay Shaw and Tom Whalen. For the first time, people will have a chance to own original art from some of Mondo's most iconic posters, including original sketches from Aaron Horkey's Pan's Labyrinth as well as Laurent Durieux's Iron Giant. The gallery opening will be held on January 25 from 7:00 - 10:00 pm with regular hours to follow for the show's duration.
So, just in case that wasn’t clear: In Progress is going to be composed of original pieces-- concept art, line drawings, and the like—that were used in the creation of some of Mondo’s most well-known posters. At least some of those pieces will be available for purchase at the show (one has to assume that there’ll be at least one or two sketches/drawings that Mondo can’t part with…after all, could you?). The artists responsible for these bits-and-pieces? Let’s look at that flier for the full lineup:
Martin Ansin. Ken Taylor. Tom Whalen. Kevin Tong. Florian Bertmer. Laurent Durieux. OK, OK, you get the point—we won’t regurgitate the whole list—but good god, man, that is a crazy lineup. Traditionally, the original (OG) pieces that sell as part of each Mondo Gallery show are priced somewhere in-between “Whoa, that’s not too bad” and “Here, Let us Remind You That Your Salary is Laughable”, so it’ll be interesting to see what sorta pricetags end up on these sketches, drawings, and…whatever else they’ve got in store for us.
If you’re wondering what, exactly, you might be able to expect from the show, Mondo sent over the following pair of images. These—like the flier up top—were created by our buddy Jock, and show off a “Before” and “After” look at Jock’s progress on the recently-released Shaun of The Dead print. The black and white photo (above) shows his initial work on the piece (a “progress shot”, said Captain Obvious), while the other, full-color image shows you the final version of the poster that Mondo dropped at last year’s New York Comic-Con.
