Mondo Mystery Movie X Revealed: RETURN OF THE KING; Mondo Announces LORD OF THE RINGS License!

     July 5, 2012

If you’re a Lord of the Rings fan or a Mondo print collector, you’re going to wish you were at the South Lamar Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, TX tonight.  That’s because Mondo just revealed that tonight’s Mystery Screening was Return of the King with a very limited print by Aaron Horkey!

But it gets better.

In addition to tonight’s awesome screening, Mondo has announced that they’ve landed the Lord of the Rings license, so you can look forward to more prints in the coming months!  Hit the jump for more.

For those not familiar with the Mondo Mystery Movie screening series, when you buy a ticket, you don’t know what movie you’re going to see.  However, every ticket comes with a print, and they’re only available at the screening.  So if you’re a print collector, the reveal of what the screening is means a lot.  And now that Mondo has announced it was Lord of the Rings, I wish I was in Austin.

Like all Mondo Mystery Screenings, they also offered an even more limited variant.  To get one of those, you had to stand outside in line all day.  As you can see below, the prints are awesome.

Finally, Scott Wampler was at the screening, so look for his write up later tonight or tomorrow.  I’m sure he’ll have a lot more to say about the prints and the difficulty in trying to get a variant.

  • Artist: Aaron Horkey
  • Size: 19.25 x 39
  • Edition: 260 (regular), 125 (variant)

That is an EXTREMELY awesome poster. I want one!

I REALLY wish these guys would stop being so worried about maintaining their status as collector’s item and just print them in large enough editions so people can buy them longer than thirty seconds after they go on sale.

  • Grayden

I hope the licensing deal means they’re going to be producing many more of these and not just 2 more in a limited number so they can sell out in 20 seconds. I really dig these posters but it seems like those who are lucky enough to sit in front a computer all day have the best shot at purchasing.

When you see such talent, it makes you feel like sh*t ^^

    Wonderful piece of work.

Aah a poster worth hanging on the wall! So much better than the cheapo looking photoshop posters of modern times.
Bring back the artists of the 70s/80s where posters were painted with skill. Not just photo’s made into a tacky collage. Mondo should be in charge of all film posters of today.

I like the idea of a variant being limited edition, but they should really start upping the quantities of the other versions. I’d probably give my left nut for the whole set once they’re release, though.
