They say there’s “nothing certain in life except death and taxes”. It’s a pretty accurate little saying, sure, but if you ask anyone who’s battled a raging poster-buying addiction, they’ll tell you what Limited Paper learned long ago: there exists a little-known third certainty in life that’s known only to screenprint collectors. Goes like this: “One can never have too many posters based on John Carpenter’s The Thing”.
So, just to recap, that’s: death, taxes, and an insatiable need to own every print based on John Carpenter’s The Thing. It’s a curse, but today there’s good news for those afflicted with this devastating compulsion: Mondo’s dropping Randy Ortiz’ The Thing poster later this week. And if ya don’t like The Thing for some (nonsensical) reason? Well, new stuff from Gary Pullin and Rich Kelly are also en route. Find out details, see the prints, and get your fix after the jump, Thing junkies.
Lately, Limited Paper’s spoken with a few collectors who’ve predicted that Mondo would slow their roll, drop-wise, in the weeks leading up to this year’s San Diego Comic-Con (all those stacks of prints aren’t going to pack themselves, y’know). After all, simply attending SDCC is a massively stressful experience, much less working one of the busiest booths on the SDCC convention floor. As such, I don’t think anyone would be surprised if the Mondo crew took a few weeks off in the lead-up to that event.
And who knows? Maybe they will. But it ain’t happening this week. Tell us what secrets you contain, O recently-arrived Mondo press release:
Tomorrow we will be selling three prints, previously sold at this year’s Texas Frightmare Weekend: THE THING by Randy Ortiz, SON OF FRANKENSTEIN by Rich Kelly, and WHITE ZOMBIE by Ghoulish Gary Pullin. Thank you to those who came out to support us at Frightmare. TFW has afforded us the opportunity to get genre-heavy, for two years in a row now. Special thanks to the Lugosi Estate for their help in seeing our vision of WHITE ZOMBIE and SON OF FRANKENSTEIN come to life.
Please follow us on Twitter for the on sale announcement. These posters will be available online at a random time on Thursday, May 23rd.
Ah, yes: the unsold Texas Frightmare Weekend posters. For anyone who’s not familiar with Texas Frightmare Weekend: it’s an annual horror convention that takes place up in Dallas, and—as they did last year—the Mondo crew recently traveled north to sell some new prints at the event. Anything that’s leftover after the event gets dropped online, anything that sells out…is sold out for good. Here’s the prints arriving Thursday:
- The Thing by Randy Ortiz
- $45 regular edition of 325
- White Zombie by Gary Pullin
- $35 regular edition of 175
- Son of Frankenstein by Rich Kelly
- $40 regular edition of 175
- Son of Frankenstein (Variant) by Rich Kelly
- $60 variant edition of 105
Just a reminder, folks: I’m pretty sure all of these snugly fit under the umbrella of Mondo’s ongoing “Universal Monsters” line of prints. So, if you’re collecting each new print in that series as they drop, you’ve got quite a job in front of you come tomorrow morning/afternoon. Good luck on that front, and—just a friendly reminder to everyone else—you’re going to want to pay attention to the Mondo Twitter feed for updates as to when these prints have gone live on the Mondo website. Follow the link, buy your print(s), get through checkout as quickly as possible.
