THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF ASHES Delayed; Future of the Sequel in Question

The sequel to The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones was set to start filming in the next few months, but now Constantin Films has put the brakes on the project.  The studio announced today (via The Wrap) that production on The Mortal Instruments: City of Ashes has been “delayed,” but The Wrap notes that the future of the project is in question.  This isn’t exactly a major surprise, as City of Bones debuted to only $9.3 million in its opening weekend and its worldwide total currently stands at $37 million against a budget of $60 million.

Harald Zwart was onboard to return as director for the YA sequel City of Ashes as was the entire cast, but frankly I would have been surprised if Constantin Films moved forward with the follow-up in the wake of the first film’s box office disappointment.  Though City of Ashes has yet to be officially canceled, I wouldn’t exactly hold my breath for it to get back on track anytime soon.

Best news ever! *Speaking as a fan of the books

  • Unique Jenique

I am a fan of the books but I haven’t seen the movie yet. This does not surprise me.

Stick to the books and you’ll be fine. Don’t change so much like in COB. i loved COB however for anyone who never read the series… they still won’t have any clue what’s going on and not have enough time to absorbe what’s going on when it’s so fast paced with action and going into another scene.. js. I love and support the movie. but with movie adaptations.. you always need to stick to the book. little change is okay. A LOT of change (which in COB WAS) is never good. – Hardcore fan

Awwww, come on! Whatever happened to “We don’t need to wait to see how the movie is actually received by the fans, we’re just going to green-light the sequel right NOW!”
I mean, that worked SO well for Green Lantern!

Yess!!! I knew we could do it people, by not watching this bullshit we have prevented another potential Twilight like franchise from even getting off the ground.

    • Seannie5

except Twilight actually had millions of fans and made billions of dollars regardless of internet haters and critical mauling. Twilight wins!!

      • sense11

its also a giant piece of garbage so go ahead and pad yourself on the back for supporting garbage

      • Seannie5

        pad myself?
Millions of fans enjoyed Twilight. Just because it isn’t to your ….refined taste doesn’t mean you need to go around throwing tantrums like a 5 year old.

To the people celebrating because they off it was a twilight knockoff its not a twilight knockoff! Don’t shut inon the way you do. Even my friend who saw it who didn’t read the books knew it wasn’t. Also don’t shit on the fandom. A lot of us are worried. Ph I read twilight and saw the movies and read the ho books and saw the movie!

    • DoobieDave

Yeah. I can tell all that reading paid off. You’re so coherent.

i am actually quite articulate. i was typing this on my ipod touch (which i got as a grad prsent)and o sometimes experience issues with the keyboard. anyway, i meant to say to the people celebrating this bad news because they thought off it as a twilight knock off, they are wrong. Because it certainlity is not! Just because it features vampires? idiots! the romance is an important aspect but not the only important aspect. tmi deals with fantasy, self discveory, love, friendship, family and sexuality(besides heotrosexuality). there is more humor, and more action. i have read all the twilight books and saw all all the movies. sames goes for hp and tmi is not of these. nonreaders (not all) liked it) others fan agree with me. what do you or others think we’re all idiots? also how one types is not on an indicator on the quality of an authors writing! people neeed to stop defaming or shitting on this fandom! i’m sorry but how dare they diss us something for different tastes. i also stand by my statement

      • TeamEdwardJace

stand by my statement that cassie is not a plagiarist . perhaps during her fanfiction days, she could have cited things better but perhaps someone hacked her account. you are allowed to write fanfiction and are allowed to references others work as long as you give credit like a disclaimer. need i mention citing in fanfiction or novels does not have the same rules as as an academic paper! why are we judging her on something that happen 10 years ago. some original stories come from fanfiction! she cites things fine now. also for the bullying thing, where’s the proof. perhaps some people took it the wrong way, overexagerated or made it up or they hacked into her account!

I liked most of the movie except some of the terrible dialog that was taken directly from the book. The female lead is very weak but that’s the way she was written … not enough of the book was rewritten for the big screen. Producers should have stepped in and said no … that doesn’t make any sense. A lot of these young adult writers have no concept how the male brain works either so they assign guys a more female set of emotions. Sorry to be sexist but we think quite differently.

    • TeamEdwardJace

i’m sorry but i disagree with you. the casting was great and you are being quite sexist. not all men understand women and women don’t always understand men. that’s a a general assumption. how is she weak? she’s quite involved and gets even more so once she becomes more expereinced and a great fighter as the shadow world goes on.

      • eternalozzie

You just made the same argument I did. The opposite sex doesn’t realize how the other’s thought processes work. I didn’t say anything about the cast. The cast is what made this movie semi watchable. There is a lot of talent there. The writing was just straight up awful.

      • TeamEdwardJace

im glad you like the cast and i disagree. you’re saying that women and men don’t understand though processes at tall. i disagree. i’m say men don’t always understand women and vice versa. that doesn’t mean all! also cassie didn’t write the movie script.

    • TeamEdwardJace

and the books actually appeal to males and females. do you think that because we are women it is not good as men? if you do, then you are unfortunately quite sexist.

  • James

No surprise. Terrible books, terrible movie.

    • Kevin

I doubt you read them or saw it.

      • cb

None of us have ever seen a lynching either, but we’re pretty sure they’re terrible.

Thank you! However, i have to give credit to Huey Freeman from “The Boondocks” for that one.

Grandad: Now, the 1st Soul Plane was funny!
Huey: About as funny as a lynching.
Grandad: Shut up, boy! You haven’t even seen it!
Huey: I’ve never seen a lynching either, but i know they’re not funny.

      • Kevin

Lol, the Blackjacking. Thats a great episode. I’m sure they are bad, but I’m just pointing out that someone who has no knowledge of something can not have a valid opinion. Common sense, really.
