After an early look about six months back we’re getting another image from Mr. Holmes in time for its premiere at the Berlin Film Festival. This new pic features Ian McKellan with his young co-star Milo Parker (Robot Overlords). It doesn’t show us an awful lot, but the premise of the film is intriguing nonetheless. McKellen plays a 93-year-old version of Arthur Conan Doyle’s legendary detective Sherlock Holmes. Previously titled A Slight Trick of the Mind, the film was directed by Bill Condon (Gods and Monsters, Kinsey) from a script by Jerry Hatcher and takes place in 1947, where Holmes is now living in retirement with his housekeeper and her amateur-sleuthing son. Holmes is haunted by a cold case from fifty years ago, and sets out to solve it once and for all without his dear Watson at his side.
I love a lot of Condon’s work, particularly Gods and Monsters, so I’m stoked to see this. The film also stars Laura Linney. Miramax, Roadside Attractions, and Filmnation Entertainment have yet to announce a release date but I’m hopeful we’ll see the movie this year. Hit the jump to get a look at the new Mr. Holmes image.
Mr. Holmes will premiere at the Berlin Film Festival, which runs from February 5th-15th.
