In Mr. Holmes, Ian McKellen stars as the latest iteration of the Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes character, completing a timeline of current Holmeses that includes Benedict Cumberbatch and Robert Downey, Jr. (I'm expecting a Sherlock, Jr. to be released soon to complete the set, or the bones of Basil Rathbone to be used in another sequel).

The movie, based on the novel A Slight Trick of the Mind by Mitch Cullin, finds Holmes at the age of 93, long retired, but haunted by a cold case from fifty years earlier that he was never able to solve. Without Watson at his side (R.I.P.), Holmes gets some help from Mrs. Hudson's (Laura Linney) amateur sleuth son (so ok, maybe there's our Sherlock Jr.)

In the new trailer for the film, directed by Bill Condon (Gods and Monsters), Holmes states that, "the case which was to be my last made me see that human nature was a mystery that logic alone could not illuminate." It also promises to show viewers "the man beyond the myth."

Here’s the official synopsis for Mr. Holmes:

MR. HOLMES is a new twist on the world’s most famous detective.1947, an aging Sherlock Holmes returns from a journey to Japan, where, in search of a rare plant with powerful restorative qualities, he has witnessed the devastation of nuclear warfare.  Now, in his remote seaside farmhouse, Holmes faces the end of his days tending to his bees, with only the company of his housekeeper and her young son, Roger.  Grappling with the diminishing powers of his mind, Holmes comes to rely upon the boy as he revisits the circumstances of the unsolved case that forced him into retirement, and searches for answers to the mysteries of life and love – before it’s too late.

Mr. Holmes is set to debut on British screeners this summer.
