Rumor: Marvel Rethinking How to Introduce Ms. Marvel?

by     Posted 112 days ago

Many have been vocal about the need for more female superheroes, perhaps more so than ever, and Kevin Feige has admitted that the team at Marvel is paying attention.  There’s been talk about Ms. Marvel making a big screen appearance for quite some time now.  Remember that rumor from two years ago claiming that Emily Blunt and Ruth Wilson were top choices for the character?

In the comics, the members of the Avengers are always changing, so it’ll always be tough to pinpoint who’s in, who’s out, who will join an ensemble film and who will get their own, however, there have been reports floating around claiming that Ms. Marvel could make her way into a close-approaching Marvel film and pave the way to Phase Three in the process.  But now Marvel’s plans for introducing Ms. Marvel into the MCU may be changing.  Hit the jump for more.  Warning: There are potential Avengers: Age of Ultron spoilers in this article!

captain-marvelAccording to Badass Digest, this is what’s planned for the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron:

“Cap will assemble a team that is a mix of familiar and new faces, leading forward into Phase Three.”

There’s no word on who will be part of that team and the outlet even points out that nothing is set in stone until the scene is shot.  They suspect that hasn’t happened yet (the film has already wrapped principal photography) and might not until they schedule Age of Ultron reshoots or decide to tack it on to the Captain America 3 shooting schedule.  But either way, Badass claims to know the heroes who will be involved in this new Avengers team, however they’re only willing to reveal one – Captain Marvel.

As someone who isn’t really in-the-know when it comes to the comics, Evan’s piece on female superheros from last year is a great source for the basics and explains that Captain Marvel is Colonel Carol Danvers.  She can fly, she’s got super strength, super speed, she’s invulnerable and, on top of that, she can shoot energy blasts from her hands.

Should Joss Whedon stick to the information Badass Digest was given, Captain Marvel, who’s dubbed Ms. Marvel in the script, would be incorporated into the film by way of an end-of-movie cameo that introduces the new Avengers.  This scene doesn’t involve an action sequence, so it can be shot at any time leading up to the film’s release without needing significant lead time to finish effects.

Essentially, this scene would serve as a transition of sorts into Phase Three by teasing the important characters, and if that’s the case, it would make it more likely that Ms. Marvel would wind up with her own movie eventually.  In fact, Badass reiterates that point.

Trouble is, then the article goes on to say that Marvel is getting cold feet about the whole thing.

“Not because they’re against the character – my sources assure me she is coming and it’s very plausible she could be on the team in Avengers 3 - but because they’re not certain they want to introduce her in this way.  They basically aren’t certain they want to just drop her into the MCU fully formed in a team movie.”

Apparently Marvel isn’t into the idea of doing origin stories like Iron Man and Captain America: The First Avenger anymore and would rather veer towards films like Guardians of the Galaxy and Thor, where the characters already have their powers.  However, that doesn’t mean they want a situation where everyone in the world already knows who the heroes are.

“This is part of the reason why you won’t see Black Panther in the movie, despite the film visiting Wakanda so Ultron can get vibranium.  There’s enough time passed between the end of the action in Age of Ultron and that final scene for Carol Danvers to get powers, a costume and have a career as a hero, but the powers-that-be aren’t sure how this will play on film.  Will dropping her in just be baffling to audiences?  I think it’ll be an exciting hint in the way that many of the credit tags are exciting hints.”

And I’m inclined to agree.  Again, I don’t know much about the source material for these movies, but time and time again, I’ve caught those super brief end credit sequences and even though I don’t necessarily know the details of what they’re teasing, getting hints at what’s to come still has an inherent thrill.  By the end of Age of Ultron, I may not know who Ms. Marvel is, but if they do throw her in, I’d like to bet I’ll walk out interested in knowing more.

Unfortunately, if Badass’ report is accurate, I may have to wait longer to find out.  If Marvel does pull Ms. Marvel out of Age of Ultron, hopefully it’s in lieu of a better and more significant introduction to the MCU.  We’ll see one way or another when Age of Ultron opens in theaters on May 1, 2015.

AMY POEHLER…at first glance I thought this was a parks and Rec article. AMY all the way…BLUNT would be great too. She’s very versatile

    • Jack Dennis

If it was ten years earlier then yes Amy Poehler.I’m down for Blunt though.

      • Leo Spaceman

Blunt was supposed to be Black Widow but she couldn’t get out of that s**ty Jack Black movie.

I think she would make an incredible edition to the MCU.

      • Cris

I haven’t seen Edge of Tomorrow yet but every other movie she’s been in has been pretty bad, I know I shouldn’t judge her on every bad movie she’s been in but that’s all I have to go on. I’d rather see a more thick built girl for Captain Marvel as well.

      • Leo Spaceman

Watch Edge of Tomorrow. You will realism how great of an opportunity was missed by not casting her as Black Widow. I don’t think I’ve seen Blunt in much else than Edge of Tomorrow but to me she is exactly what I want out of Black Widow. I don’t really care for Scarlets version of Widow, she doesn’t have the same intensity that I think Blunt can have because she is too much of a pretty girl for the camera and I can’t shake the feeling that she is still acting for a camera and thinks she’s better than everyone else.

But seriously watch Edge of Tomorrow for the simple reason that it is a fantastically put together movie and is really a great and enjoyable film.

      absolutely not

    • 80sRobot

After watching Blunt in Edge of Tomorrow, I really could see her as a heroine lead in a movie (and I want to). I could see her as Capt. Marvel, or Supergirl/Kara Zor-El in the DC movie universe. Heck, when rumors broke about Sony considering doing Ghostbusters 3 with a female crew, somebody suggested Blunt for the leader, and I could imagine that too.

      • TheDarkNut

Blunt was set to be Black Widow in IM2 but had scheduling conflict. Role went to ScarJo…

      • 80sRobot

Yeah I remember reading that. I wonder, though, if the possibility of Blunt having a significant role in the DC movie-verse is now stronger, thanks to her being in the studio’s Edge of Tomorrow.

Regarding Supergirl/Kara, there really aren’t many popular and cool superheroines in the DC side, besides WW. If Warner intends to ramp things up and wants to have more prominent heroines, getting Kara into one of the movies would be a priority.

      • Cris

I very much like the idea of her being in the DC Universe that seems like a better fit than Captain Marvel for her. I just don’t see Captain Marvel when I look at her… now when I see a Black Widow comic at my local shop I instantly see Scarlet – now that is what Marvel Studios wants.

      • 80sRobot

I totally agree. Blunt seems like she’d fit in with the DC movie-verse better than with the Marvel movie-verse. I see Katee Sackhoff’s face whenever I see Captain Marvel in the recent comics now — I bet the Marvel Studio producers want Sackhoff and are pursuing her, like they envisioned Samuel Jackson for Fury back in the day.

As for Kara, she wouldn’t be “Supergirl” — she’d be Clark’s equal. Imagine Blunt wearing similar looking armor that Faora wore but in the Superman colors. That’s how I see “Supergirl” in the DC movie-verse.

      • Mekt_Ranzz

That’s really weird because I just started reading the 2014 Captain Marvel comic book series and you’re definitely right! The new Captain Marvel (Ms. Marvel) looks almost exactly like Katee Sackhoff!

I hope they pick her for the role. She’s my favorite out of all the contenders.

    • Vulcan

I don’t know about Amy Poehler, I love her, but I don’t think she would take Mr. Marvel/ Captain Marvel seriously at all. I could see Emily Blunt as her for sure, or even Jennifer Lawrence seeing how a bunch of Academy winners are flocking to Marvel, but peoples heads and the internet might explode if Lawrence takes the job.

  • NICK НΛRT

it would be cool to have her appear as a shield agent and then get her powers in a solo film, but i understand if they dont want this movie to be over-crowded. when they do decide to cast her though, i think brie larson would be a fantastic choice.

    • Kyle Chandler

Interesting pick! Hadn’t heard that one before. I think there are a ton of women that would be absolutely fantastic for the role, and I think that they can go a lot of different directions with the character.

  • Kyle Chandler

I mean, if they can drop Thanos into the end credits, they can drop just about anyone in there.

I would say that her powers tie in to the larger and more cosmic marvel universe, so even if they don’t do a traditional origin story, they’d be missing an opportunity to expand on the kree and the cosmic situation as a whole.

    • Oliver Queen

Well they are already going to expand on the Kree and the Nova Corps in Guardians 2 so i wouldn’t mind them not having an origin story for her, since they mention Dr. Strange in Cap 2 as a threat, it probably means he already has his powers so the Strange film won’t be an origin and i think it they have Strange, Ms. Marvel and Panther at the end of Avengers 2 and have their solo films with them already established would be better, i think that is the way to go.

      • Vulcan

I was kind of hoping that Mar-Vell would show up at the end of Guardians to clear everything up with the Nova Corps about Ronan, but sadly it didn’t happen.

      • Cris

I agree that seeing Mar-Vell and seeing Carol get her powers would be so awesome but I think that including Mar-vell would confuse the hell out of your average movie goer.

      • JBug

They wouldn’t do that because it would require them to cast someone as the character and they don’t know yet if they want to pursue that character for a while.

  • SorryNotSorry

    That’s Captain Marvel.

    • Oliver Queen

What? The character has always been Ms. Marvel and has only been renamed a few years ago to Captain Marvel when the original Mar-Vell / Captain Marvel died. It’s only right she is called in the movie by the name she was created with and used for most of her existence in comics.

      • Cris

It also would be weird to have a Captain America and a Captain Marvel in the movie universe, I think sticking with Ms. Marvel till people become familiar with her is the right way to go

      • Bomtronathon

Maybe Cap can change his name so he can be Ms. America.

  • Dan

My friend who interned at Marvel a couple summers ago (right after Avengers came out) said that Ms. Marvel would be part of the new team of Avengers after the first team goes missing. He also said that Mar-Vell would also be involved first as an enemy who gives Danvers her powers, and then as an ally.

    • Cris

ah I wish I could believe every one of these kinds of stories but ya know … the internet and all. Having said that …. I love that idea, it would be pretty awesome to see that all play out on the big screen

  • Vulcan

I would think the best way to introduce her, would be to have her as a minor part in Avengers 2 as a Air Force officer or SHIELD agent assisting the Avengers, and then in the post credits scene, she gets her powers from the Kree somehow. The Kree have already been introduced in Guardians.

  • szadkowski

They are continuing to build the Civil War storyline from The Winter Soldier for Phase 3. With Cap forming Secret Avengers team with Cap 3 then leading into Avengers 3. He’s getting Hawkeye in Cap 3 so it seems like a plausible storyline.

I can see Ms. Marvel starting off as more of an antagonist (Avengers side) for Cap. Because she’s was once a villain against the Secret Avengers before joining.

I can see the death of Cap as the catalyst for Avengers 3. (Avengers 3: The Fallen Son) just throwing that one out there. I’ve seen people theorize that Marvel will kill off Cap in Cap 3 but I don’t see them ending a story arc of Cap with his death. The Avengers need a solid catalyst to come together to end the Civil War.

A Ms. Marvel movie would be perfect to kick off Phase 4 just like how Ant-man is kicking off Phase 3. And then tie back to GotG 3.

    • Vulcan

I would love to see Civil War, but they need to tie up things with Thanos first, before they can move into Civil War.

      • szadkowski

They’ve already started it Cap 2. Thanos still hasn’t done anything major he’s still sitting back in the shadows. And it doesn’t seem like he’s going to play a larger role in Avengers 2. There needs to be some tension between Avengers 2 building up to Avengers 3.

      • cruzzercruz

It seems pretty evident that they’re pushing Thanos for Avengers 3 given the general focus on the Infinity Stones. Whether you want to see that in the series or not, it’s obviously where they’re leaning over Civil War.

    • Michael Lally

I think that if they do end up killing off Cap then I’d rather it happen in Avengers 3. More likely than not it’ll be Thanos as the villain and if they really feel the need to kill off Steve Rogers I’d like to see him die to stop Thanos. What can I say, I’m a sucker for a well done heroic sacrifice. Either way its unlikely to happen in Cap 3. They got Chris Evans for 6 movies and he’s done 4 of them including age of ultron

  • Napoleon Dynamite

I hope they get Blunt for the role.

  • Doug_101

Introduce Carol Danvers in an Avengers 2 cameo scene with an uncredited cameo from Hugh Jackman as “guy who looks a helluva lot like Wolverine.” It wouldn’t explicitly say that Wolverine is in the Avengers universe, but it would be a wink to the fans and not rile up the lawyers.

Oh, and I’m still all for Katee Sackhoff as Carol, but Emily Blunt would be good too.

  • Friday

Joss did say there wourld be 4 female inn avengers2, I only think of 3 (BlackW, Scar.Wich & M.Hill), Am I forgetting someone, ore did he slip up(when askd about the Lak of Marvel.Women), My thought was emidiently Cap/Ms.Marvel cameo (ore someone els)

    • guest

      Maybe just Pepper Pots?

      • guest

Or Thor now that I think of it.

    • Cris

I remember hearing this as well, but I wonder how big of a role that 4th female could have … what if she’s a small character not from the Marvel Universe that is just used as a plot device. Hopefully the 4th one is Ms. Marvel or another female Super Hero but Joss could be getting our hopes up with that one.

Yvonne Strahovski for Ms Marvel…or The Enchantress, whatever works.

    • SorryNotSorry

Enchantress would be a fun adversary for the next Thor movie. We need more Marvel villains with a personality.

      • Chris

Not to mention seeing her up against her old spy/nerd-husband Zachary Levi aka Chuck Bartowski aka Fandral

  • mattinacan

that sounds smart. just dropping fully formed characters into a meaningless movie is what DC is doing.

  • TheMuppetManiac

Alice Eve would’ve killed it as Sue Storm. But she would make a pretty good Ms. Marvel too. Or maybe Yvonne Strahovski.

    • SorryNotSorry

In a perfect world, Alice Eve would have killed it as Emma Frost in First Class.

  • spaceMONkeyx01

Ms marvel? Are kidding me. These things are getting too ridiculous. What about Ms disney or Ms Warner bros? Go play Video games kids. Those things are more meaningful than comic books ever will be.

Don’t be an idiot. Ms Marvel is awesome.

      • Yep

        Indeed she is.

The reasons I’d like to see Ms. Marvel on the big screen is because she is one of the more powerful heroes in the MCU and because I love how she ties in to the Kree. I don’t know if either of these reasons are enough to warrant her own movie.

    • Redjester

Yeah, but considering that even the most remote male Marvel heroes are being given their own movies nowadays, this certainly would keep the studio from looking like a bunch of sexist aholes.
