Because The Mummy franchise has shriveled up and died, Universal has decided to bring it back from the dead again.  Variety reports that Prometheus co-writer Jon Spaihts has been tapped to pen the screenplay for a reboot.  Says Spaihts, “I see it as the sort of opportunity I had with Prometheus: to go back to a franchise’s roots in dark, scary source material, and simultaneously open it up to an epic scale we haven’t seen before.”  I can only hope Spaihts is referring not to the Brendan Fraser movies, but the 1932 Boris Karloff picture.  I’m not sure how Spaihts plans to incorporate an “epic scale” to The Mummy, but it sounds like he’s trying to find a new angle on the franchise rather than simply do another goofy adventure tale like the previous Mummy movies.

Spaihts is also writing an untitled space adventure for producer Jerry Bruckheimer, the sci-fi script Passengers starring Keanu Reeves, and an adaptation of the graphic novel World War Robot (no connection to the upcoming zombie film, World War Z).  He previously wrote the script for The Darkest Hour.

  1. I always thought they missed a trick with having Brendan Fraser’s “Rick O’Connell” being the linchpin between all of Universal’s library of monster characters ( rather than the awful Van Helsing movie ).

Do we need a Mummy reboot? I’d rather it be “The Adventures Of Rick O’Connell”, be it with Fraser or another actor donning the Indiana Jones-esque mantle.

  2. They should just do a completely new story line with new characters … there is plenty of Egyptian mythology out there to draw from … Let O’connell rest in peace. We have had are fill of dorky adventure comedies to last a long time. The Mummy is a monster so let’s have a monster movie.

    • I agree, but do you honestly think Hollywood are going to explore the rich breadth of Egyptian mythology?? I doubt it.

In ‘The Mummy Returns’ they even made out that Anubis was the Dark God, the opposite of Horus – he’s nothing of the sort!
Even a casual exploration of Egyptian myths will show that Set(h) is the arch-nemesis of Horus…

Now if they could tie this new Mummy with some aspect of the mummiform Osiris, that might be interesting…

  3. Well, I’m pleasantly surprised to see people on here giving this idea a chance! I’m all for this, especially if they go a serious horror route.

When the first trailer for the Mummy came out, it deceptively looked like a horror film, in the vein of Bram Stokers Dracula, with Gary Oldman and Mary Shelleys Frankenstein with Deniro. I thought the Mummy would almost complete the set (aside from Wolfman which had been WOLF with Jack Nicholson at the time, until the recent incarnation)

So, I hope this reboot is in the vein of the Boris karloff horror films rather than the goofy cgi heavy comedy films. Been a long time coming!

  4. The Mummy films with Brendan Fraser were both good fun. I remember having a ball in the cinema when I watched them, I must have been 15 or 16 years old. It was made to be camp and it succeeded. I also fell in love with Rachel Weisz.

Sure, it was bound to piss the purists off, but who cares! The myths will just continue to be done in a plethora of different ways, this new take on the Mummy is a prime example. Can’t wait.
