The movie musical is a sub-genre that everyone either loves or hates. There is rarely anyone who sits on the sidelines when it comes to the movie musical, and while the film has produced some classics, there have also been some spectacular bombs (looking at you, The Nutcracker).

Then there is the brilliant idea created by a producer to combine a classic film with a musical, and these can be even more hated than the original film musical. There have been some laughable bombs, but these classic movies that were adapted to musicals may surprise you in just how good they are.

Monty Python is the king of parody, and in 1975, he released Spamalot, a hilarious parody of King Author. In 2005, Spamalot got its own Broadway musical; and the zany production received 14 Tony Awards nominations, winning three of them.

Spamalot proved that you don’t have to be a serious production to be a hit musical on the world’s biggest musical stage.

'Newsies'

A film drama about newspaper delivery boys may sound boring on paper, but Newsies isn’t that; in fact, it’s far from it. Based on the Newsboys Strike of 1899, Newsies, the Disney film, bombed at the box office; but was transformed into a stage play in 2011 that was nominated for eight Tony Awards.

The newspaper boys not only delivered the news but a great musical as well.

Once is now a big-time musical, and production of the show has spread all around the world.

'The Full Monty'

Everyone is used to the women stripping in front of the camera; so it was only natural and fair for a movie to be shown about guys who decide to strip for some cash.

The Full Monty was a box office bonanza when it was released in 1997; and three years after its release, the film got a Broadway musical adaptation that was just as inventive, provocative, and great as the film.

Since then, the glamour of Old Hollywood has been a recurring theme in both movies and on the musical circuit, with one of the best being the musical adaptation of Sunset Boulevard. The next time it’s revived for a tour, make sure you go see it.

'Anastasia'

Anastasia is not the first musical to be adapted from an animated movie, but it is one of the best. In 1997, Anastasia caught the movie going public by surprise, becoming a hit and forging a lasting legacy.

It was natural for Broadway to adopt it into a musical, and in 2016, that’s exactly what happened, running to this very day. It’s a sterling musical that does an aplomb job of telling the story of the Grand Duchess of Russia; and although tragic, the musical will leave you spellbound.

'Kinky Boots'

When you mention great musicals, a production that normally comes up is Kinky Boots.

Based on the 2005 film that follows a struggling shoe factory that partners with a drag queen to save his business, Kinky Boots made the transition from the big screen to the musical stage in 2012, and it’s been a Tony Award-winning production ever since. Also, the boots are dazzling to behold.

'The Lion King'

This Disney film is one of the best-animated films ever made, shattering box office records and becoming the stuff of legend among Disney lovers (and non-Disney lovers). So it was only natural that The Lion King would become a musical, and in 1997, it opened in Minneapolis to a packed house.

When it moved to Broadway, it became a permanent fixture on both the musical circuit, consistently selling out. If you can snag tickets to see The Lion King – either on Broadway or on tour – you will be in for a musical treat.

'Beauty and the Beast'

Before The Lion King broke records, Beauty and the Beast told a beautiful love tale that continues to be a tribute to the level of influence Disney has on modern animation.

The musical adaptation of this timeless tale, which debuted on Broadway in 1994 and on tour a year later, is equally beautiful in its storytelling, using the music to push forward the emotional weight of the story. Along with The Lion King, once it is revived in America, don’t miss out on this musical treat.
