After taking some much-deserved time off following her Best Actress Oscar win for Black Swan and the birth of her child, Natalie Portman is beginning to line up a slate of upcoming projects. She’s set to star in two new Terrence Malick films and she’ll return for Thor 2, and now she’s attached herself to star in and produce a wildly interesting project called Jane Got a Gun. The film, described as a Western, was written by Brian Duffield and centers on “a woman whose outlaw husband returns home barely alive and riddled with bullet wounds. She is forced to reach out to an ex-lover and ask if he will help defend her farm when her husband’s gang eventually tracks him down to finish the job.” Hit the jump for more.
Though the involvement of Portman in a full-on Western is enticing enough, We Need to Talk About Kevin director Lynne Ramsay is attached to take the helm, making this one damn exciting project. Kevin was one of the best films of 2011 and I’ve been eager to see what Ramsay would choose as her follow-up project; the idea of her tackling a Western with Portman in the lead is almost too good to be true. Per THR, the project has rightly sparked a bidding war at Cannes, so we should hear some firm acquisition news soon.
With Thor 2 and the Malick films slated to shoot this year, I don’t expect production on Jane Got a Gun to get underway before 2013. That said, I’m sure the finished product will be more than worth the wait. If you haven’t yet seen We Need to Talk About Kevin, I highly recommend you seek the film out. Ramsay’s chilling drama about the effect of a school shooting on the perpetrator’s parents is anchored by incredible performances from Tilda Swinton and Ezra Miller.
