Nathan Fillion Begins Twitter Campaign to Play Nathan Drake in UNCHARTED: DRAKE’S FORTUNE

Last week, writer-director David O. Russell left Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and came on board to write and direct and adaptation of the video game Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune.  It’s interesting to see O. Russell leave one genre project for another when you consider that his last movie was “an existential comedy”.  But who will star as protagonist Nathan Drake?  Firefly and Castle star Nathan Fillion thinks it should be him.  Fillion has begun a Twitter campaign to have his almost 650,000 followers cheer for him to get the role.  Hit the jump for why I think Fillion would be great for the part and the obstacles I see in the way of him getting it.

nathan_fillion_02If you’ve played Uncharted, it’s not hard to see Fillion in the role.  The character is charming, wise-cracking, and heroic in spirit.*  I also think that Fillion is an actor with enough charisma and dashing good-looks that it’s surprising he hasn’t already been getting leading roles in action movies.

But Fillion has two major obstacles in getting the role.  The first issue is his age.  He’s almost forty and studios want their franchise heroes to be in their mid-20s, early-30s.  Of course, Tom Cruise is almost fifty and no one is stopping him from doing action movies and Paramount is planning to build the future Mission: Impossible franchise off the 39-year-old Jeremy Renner.  I can see Sony wanting a younger actor, but Fillion isn’t so old that his age should be a deal-breaker.

The other, and more problematic issue, is scheduling.  It’s hard to fit in an action blockbuster when you’re doing a weekly TV series for a large chunk of the year.  It’s not an impossibility, but the larger the film—and Uncharted is being positioned as a blockbuster—the more time it takes to shoot.  Would Sony and O. Russell want Fillion enough that they would be willing to shoot around his schedule for Castle?

Despite these two issues, I think Fillion would be perfect for the role and hopefully Sony and O. Russell will give him a chance.

*In action, he’s a genocide machine.  I’ve only played through about three quarters of the game and I’m pretty sure I’ve killed at least a thousands people by now.  The number of minorities you murder in your quest for buried treasure eventually becomes somewhat unsettling.

    um.. make it happen?

The Single Most Overrated Actor Of All Time. Fanboys need to get over their unfounded belief that Nathan Fillion is some sort of amazing actor that should play every comic book/ video game character that ends up in a movie. Now him starting a campaign for himself is just sad, does he know the Betty White-SNL on was fan started? Please get a real actor to play one of the best video game heroes created in recent years.

    • Nathan @

      Someone’s jealous….

    • Dogg @

…and you’ll end up with The Rock. Fillion’s about the one shot of making this not suck.

      • Romsy @

Because he made a sci-fi show that got canceled(for good reason) and a spin off movie from that series(that made no money, for good reason) and is currently on a crap show that nobody watches(for good reason) how would he be the “only” actor that could “save” this movie?
Oh, and i would be equally upset if the rock was cast, but the Rundown is still better than anything Fillion has been in

      • Rashad @

Agreed; overrated shit tv actor. The Rock can act circles around this chump

      • Stephen Belanger @

I really hope you are trolling. The Rock has about as much personality as…well…a rock.

  3. mountaineerb3nr @

I really don’t like him either. Something about him really puts me off of him. I REALLY don’t want him to portray one of my favorite video game characters of all time.

I’m a fan of Nathan Fillion’s work but I do think he’s to old for the part and I don’t think that abc will let him take time off from Castle to work on Drakes Fortune for Sony. In my mind this is my top five guys to play Drake Chris Evans, Ryan Reynolds, Garrett Hedlund, Chris Pine, or Taylor Kitsch

    • G4TVCAM @

I unfortunately agree with the first part of your comment. That may happen, but as for your choices, I think those guys are the overrated ones (or at least overused). Evans is Captain America, Reynolds is Green Lantern, Hedlund is Tron, Pine is Kirk and Kitsch…actually I dont mind that one. Why not give a smaller actor a chance?

    • Michelle @

I think Ryan Reynolds is a great choice for Nathan Drake. He’s funny and hot. If they just dirtied him up a little, he’s look just like Drake.

  5. Popadopolis3000 @

I agree with Romsy and William; he’s overrated and too old…

  6. Jason Pollock @

I’ve seen age as the issue with the fan-casting of Fillion as Drake, as well – but he’d be great. Other solid alternatives would be James Roday and Jensen Ackles.

    • Bogie @

James Roday? nah can’t see that but Ackles should be in the running.

      • ichsi @

        Agreed, Ackles would be perfect.
As much as I love Fillion I think he’s too old for the part as well. Now i know that Ford and Depp were als around forty but in cotrast to them Fillion looks it and he’s a bit on the chunkier side (not that there’s something wrong with that, just isn’t that suitable for an action hero). What I really wanna see him in, is the next James Bond movie. As the villain. Imagine Daniel Craig and him facing off… *shivers*

btw: all the guys calling him overrated, have you ever seen him or are you just annoyed by his fans enthusiasm?

  7. Mel @

Hell Yeah, Perfect for the Role.

  8. Guest @

Harrison Ford was 39 when he played Indiana Jones for the first time which Drake is well crafted rip off of. I don’t see Fillion’s age as problem however I wouldn’t object to someone like Chris Pine. Not Chris Evans though, though i did enjoy him in “Sunshine” and “Scott Pilgrim”, the smart-ass character that he plays in 95% of his movies is annoying.

  9. RudinFilargo @

hey killing minorities for buried treasure is called being a good american. And citizen of earth, fyi. Plus, of course he wants to do this movie. Castle blows goats in hell. And i miss firefly so i think he should do it.

  10. Seancarter3190 @

Here’s an idea. How about Nolan North. The guy that voices & mo caps him. People forget he is also an actor. Why does it have to be a uber famous person. At least screen test him. Who knows, we may get a new star out of it.

  11. Bogie @

Dude’s too old and kinda fat now.

  12. Ballantine3 @

“In action, he’s a genocide machine. I’ve only played through about three quarters of the game and I’m pretty sure I’ve killed at least a thousands people by now. The number of minorities you murder in your quest for buried treasure eventually becomes somewhat unsettling.”

Yes, but in videogame terms, for every 200 people Drake kills, that probably translates to one henchmen on-screen, plus in the movie I think they would make Drake knock out most goons rather than snap their necks.

P.S. Disagree with Fillion. Chris Evan’s would be a more likely candidate (if he isn’t to busy with Captain America)

  13. reese @

actors with tv contracts are never chosen.

  14. AllenRoberts @

NOOOO! Fillion is WAY too old… Besides he doesn’t even look like Nate Drake… I say Bradley Cooper for Drake and Julie Bowen for Elena Fischer…

As far as the age issue goes can I just point out that Harrison Ford and Johnny Depp were both 40 when they first starred as Indiana Jones and Jack Sparrow?!?! Yeah, remind me again how those movies turned out… Oh, and they’re BOTH making or planning on making more of those films now that they’re nearing 50 and 70 respectively. Just pick the best actor for the part and ignore the whiners going on about age.

We want Nathan Fillion to be cast as Nathan Drake!

Yes! NATHAN FILLION is the BEST choice to play Nathan Drake! He’s got action hero written all over him, with the biceps to prove it. He’s extremely bright, clever, funny, sexy, young, hot, and devilishly handsome. And he want this role as much as we want it for him!

It’s his turn to be the next powerful leading man on the big screen. He’s an up-and-coming A-list movie star with muscle and heat and he’s a-comin’ to take over feature films! I feel it! Grab him while you can for the Uncharted franchise. Because he’ll also make the best Indiana Jones when they re-boot those movies!!

In his campaign to be Nathan Drake, we Browncoats and Castillions firmly support our Captain Nathan Fillion!

    • Bogie @

He would have been great 10-15 years ago but the Drake character is 28….not 40. I know age can sometimes be pushed a few years but over a decade? it just won’t work. If they change the character to 40 just to shoe horn in some actor it will ruin the movie.

      • Kcat10 @

Nathan Fillion is only 39. He is young. He’s the same age Harrison Ford was when he started the Indiana Jones movies. It’s not about actual age, anyway. It’s about youthful vitality, sexiness, strength, smarts, and a great sense of humor, all of which Nathan has in abundance. Nathan is in excellent shape. He has big guns for biceps. He is absolutely perfect for the part of Nathan Drake.

  19. machin3man @

I think Fillion would be exceptional. He’s one of my favorite actors and one the most UNDERRATED out there. He needs a lead role in a big movie but I think he might be too old for the part. But like the guy said, look at Tom Cruise right?
Plus he would need to get in mega freaking shape cause he’s been looking a little chunky on TV lately

  20. Ozweego @

I don’t mind Fillion. Drake and Fillion’s character in Firefly parallel each other pretty closely. So he should be able to pull it off. I also liked him in “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog” which is one of the best musicals out there, for a guy at least.
For me, its between him and Ryan Reynolds. Got to represent my Canadian brother!

  21. Ozweego @

    brothers. Sorry, missed the “s”

  22. Ozweego @

  23. Fallyn @

What made Nathan Drake an amazing character wasn’t definied by his age, it was by his personality…one that Fillion has mastered in many of his roles. I think he’d be FANTASTIC in the part, because he’s GOOD at those types of characters.

  24. Estrick1 @

dude, they are not minorities in the countries where he is killing them.

  25. Mattwalega @

He is perfect for the role. Age doesn’t mean anything exceppt to producers which unfortunately make the call. But i would like nothing better then to see him in this role.

  26. Guitar Villain @

Honestly I don’t know if this is a big enough showcase for Fillion. I guess it’s a stepping stone and hopefully it will get him an opportunity (if he gets it) for bigger roles. To me the guy has every bit as much charisma, wit, and screen presence as Robert Downey Jr. Dowey has finally gotten his due, now it’s Fillion’s turn.

  27. Jac @

I’m confused about the too old comments. Since last I checked were talking about voicing a video game. And reallly??? the rock is a better actor? I was surprised with how good a actor it turned out the rock was but no way is he better then Fillion.

  28. Michelle @

nathan fillion’s too ugly to play nathan drake.

  29. Naota @

In today’s society the average 40 year old is in better shape ( and and about 10x tougher), than the average 25 year old. . .

Fillion would be perfect for the part.

  30. William @

His age isn’t his biggest problem, his biggest is scheduling will abc let him shoot do this movie and I highly doubt that.

  31. TonyaJ @

For Hire on film Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune: Nathan Fillion, Journeyman actor. Previous experience in action film and television as leading man; Firefly, Serenity as Mal Reynolds. Sheriff Bill Pardy in the film Slither. Richard Castle on Castle. In short, the fans want Nathan Fillion as Nathan Drake!!

We have to make this happen, folks!

  32. Gary @

I’d love to watch Nathan Fillion in action. I’ve not seen Firefly yet, but saw Serenity and thought it was awesome! And Castle is really good, its my one in my all-time top fav show along with Supernatural, Lost, and Fringe. If he doesn’t get the part, I probably won’t watch the movie.
So, make it happen Firefly and Nathan Fillion fans!!
