Nathan Fillion Still Has Mad Love for His FIREFLY and SERENITY Fans

“Castle” is one of the most depressing shows on television right now.  It’s not because of the show itself which is just a generic cop show except Fillion is a crime fiction writer and he gets to have “Moonlighting”-type banter with his co-star Stana Katic.  It’s because “Castle” is just a bad show and Fillion is so much better than the material.

However, for 35 glorious seconds, this week’s episode of “Castle” was amazing as Captain Malcolm Reynolds re-emerged…or Fillion’s character Richard Castle dressed as a “space cowboy” for Halloween.  You’ll see that even though it breaks the fourth wall like it was tissue paper, Fillion still has a lot of love for the character and for the fans (like myself) that continue to love the character.  Hit the jump to check out the clip and keep flying.

Great moment from the show. I nearly creamed myself.

But I totally disagree with regards to Castle. It’s not a shining beacon of television, but it’s witty and tons of fun to watch.

Are you kidding with the hate Steve? Maybe if you actually watched the show instead of saying “A COP PROCEDURAL? I’m so above that!” then you might find out that the show isn’t crap. It’s witty as hell, the whodunit bits are engaging, and all of the main characters are very well realized. The two “buddy cops” could have just been cardboard cutouts that you’ve seen 20 times but they actually have interesting personalities and I grown to like them as much or more than Katic and Fillion’s characters.

The fact that the creators of the show put the wink and nods that they did in the last episode shows that they apparently share more of your sensibilities than you might expect. Not that you would ever find this out on your own, since you probably never gave it a chance beyond the “Murder He Wrote” series premiere.

It’s gotten better as the series progressed, and I’m glad it was picked up for at least a while longer by ABC because it’s a joy to watch every week. For all I know they could be re-using tropes from CSI and the like, but ignorance is bliss because frankly I don’t watch them.

I wouldn’t mind if you claimed this show was “run of the mill” even though I disagree with that too, because I could at least understand that you find the “New York police procedural” too well-trodden to be engaging. But your immediate and harsh dismissal of it as a “BAD SHOW” that Fillion is “so much better than” completely comes off as someone who never gave the program the time of day to start with, and didn’t even put it on his PVR to come back to because he was turned off by the premise alone.

Guess what? I didn’t love all the Firefly characters like they were my friends after only the first couple episodes either! That changed because I gave it time to breathe knowing that the actors would eventually mesh with each other and find a comfort zone where their comedy beats could feel organic.

I come off of this sounding like the biggest fucking Castle fanboy in the world, when really I just think it’s a snappily written, fun as hell way to spend 45 minutes a week (for reasons beyond my pre-existing man crush for Nathan Fillion). And the snap judgement you seem to have made of it is something you’ve done to other things undeservedly in the past.

I agree, the critic is a wetard. I loved firefly and yes this Nathon Fillion guy is quickly becoming one of my fav actors and yes I think he would do quite nicely in anything he does. For the time being I would watch Castle over almost anything on TV. Probably the crap you think is better right now. What you want to put Nathon in CSI Corpus Christi. Jesus, all you critics suck nuts. I think Fillion would be perfect in the Robotech movie coming out as Roy Fokker. Anyway, Garbage review dude, Garbage. Go throw your career in the trash cuz your GARBAGE… Completely agree with Spartacvs

Brilliant moment. But I have to strongly disagree with this article. Although the series is not groundbreaking in any way, Castle is alot of fun to watch. Especially for moments like this!! Nathan Fillion’s witty banter and sexual tension with costar Stana Katic is charming. At this point the show is just growing into itself and I for one have enjoyed the ride so far.

I really can’t for one second agree with your assertion that Castle is a bad show. It’s certainly no Life (over whose cancellation I still weep), but it’s a pretty well written show with a great cast.
That having been said… the brief appearance of Malcolm Reynolds on my TV screen was a shining moment of joy.

I cried with joy, but then I was hastily jerked back from the glories of outer space to a crime drama, then I was crying for a different reason.

Castle is not awful show. It’s fluff. Sure, it’s not going to win Emmys, but it’s fun.

As others have said, Castle may not be great TV but it sure is fun. It demonstrates how important casting is: terrific actors with on-screen chemistry can elevate weak source material; “Dollhouse”–even with much better writing this season–can’t rise above a cast with absolutely no chemistry; “Firefly” was great source material plus truly exceptional casting.

And as if last night’s Malcolm Reynold’s cameo wasn’t wheeze-laugh worthy enough, the “Underworld” reference that followed just about did me in. :-)

First. I agree with most that Castle isn’t “great” but it is a nice break at the end of the day. Especially when all I want is “fluff” that doesn’t force me think too much. It’s fun.

I knew as soon as I saw the boots what was happening and it was GREAT!! I especially liked when the daughter says “Didn’t you wear that like 5 years ago?” I still hold out the hope, albeit small, for something else Firefly (another movie maybe?). Nathan appears up for it.

I must agree with the commenters, Castle is a good “popcorn” show. In other words, pure entertainment value. If you are comparing it to Firefly, then no question Firefly wins … but Castle stands on its own too.

Disagree strongly with Matt Goldberg’s opinion of the “Castle” TV series. It’s a favorite show of the wife and mine.

Also, did you notice the catalyzer in the scene? It’s underneath the boat, right side of the shelf, about the :13 second mark.

While the plot of Castle can be cliche, the dialog makes the show.
