Here’s the official press release:
New York (September 14, 2011) — Artina Films’ announced today Nathan Lane is joining Julianne Moore and Greg Kinnear in the sharp comedy, THE ENGLISH TEACHER. The film is produced by Naomi Despres, Robert Salerno and Matthew Chausse of Artina alongside producer Ben LeClair. The Executive Producer is Ron Curtis. The film begins shooting in New York next month, and will mark the feature directorial debut of Craig Zisk (THE BIG C, NURSE JACKIE, WEEDS). The screenplay is by Dan and Stacy Chariton. International sales are being handled by Kim Fox of Inferno Entertainment, which Inferno handled Moore’s THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT.
The film is the story of beloved high school English teacher Linda Sinclair (Moore) whose repressed personal life exists in stark contrast to the passion she brings to the classroom. Linda’s carefully constructed life is upended when a former star pupil returns to her small town after failing miserably as a playwright in New York. Convincing him to mount his un-produced play at the high school, Linda finds herself in the middle of more drama than she’s ever known. Lane plays the high school drama teacher who is dragged into Linda’s production, taking on more than he bargained for.
“Nathan is a dream addition to our already dream cast,” said Artina’s Robert Salerno. “This is a classic Nathan role.”
The film marks the first Artina has assembled through its new financing apparatus designed to produce three films a year in the $5 million – $25 million range. Artina Films is currently in post-production on ARBITRAGE starring Richard Gere and Susan Sarandon, and WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN starring Tilda Swinton opening in December.
Lane recently starred in Broadway’s smash musical THE ADAMS FAMILY. He will next be seen in Tarsem-Singh directed UNTITLED SNOW WHITE film alongside Julia Roberts, Lily Collins and Armie Hammer. Film audiences will remember Lane’s triumphant performance as Albert in Mike Nichols’ THE BIRDCAGE, which helped catapult the film into a major blockbuster hit. The role earned Lane a Screen Actors Guild Award and a Golden Globe Nomination.
