NBC Rumors: HEROES Cancelled? Jimmy Smits on LAW & ORDER: LA? Plus, Emmy Submission for THE OFFICE, 30 ROCK, FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS and More

by     Posted 4 years, 104 days ago

The once powerful superhero saga Heroes has fallen on hard times in the past couple seasons, whether the metric is critical praise or viewership.  No shock, then, that Vulture reports it is increasingly unlikely that Heroes will get a fifth season.  The show was very much a pop-culture sensation in its first season, reaching upwards of 16 million viewers at one point.  It now averages less than 5 million.  The series still has a shot at another season based on solid DVD sales and a strong international brand, though those factors can only sway the decision rather than make it.

There is hope for fans, though, as NBC is apparently looking into a one-off movie (two to four hours) to resolve the various dangling plotlines.  Although, I recall something similar promised upon the network’s cancellation of Las Vegas which never came to fruition.  After the jump, details on NBC’s Law & Order: LA offer to Jimmy Smits as well as the network’s Emmy submission selections.

Jimmy Smits is earning high marks in the pilot for the legal drama Garza, though the show itself isn’t quite as hot, and may not be picked up.  Deadline reports that in an effort to stay in the Smits business, NBC offered him the lead in the new Los Angeles edition of Law & Order.  A Smits-fronted LOLA (side note: awesome acronym) isn’t the likeliest events, but it’s a very logical move for the network.  NBC wants a big name to front LOLA => They like Jimmy Smits => Jimmy Smits is a big name in television => Jimmy Smits: once again playing a detective after leaving NYPD Blue over a decade ago.

Lastly, Entertainment Weekly has a list of the episodes NBC Universal shows submitted to the Emmys for awards consideration.  It’s worth a look, just to see which episodes each show thinks represents its best.

As much as Heroes sucked this year, I still want a 5th season to tie everything up.

I also extremely hate NBC for ending Las Vegas on a cliffhanger. All they needed to do was film one more episode that season. Wouldn't have been so hard. From a business standpoint I think its stupid to cancel a show like that in year 5 because DVD and syndication viewing till the end of time could be hurt. People start watching reruns then read online they'll get hit with no ending and decide not to bother. Vegas only ended two years ago. Maybe NBC could still do it.

Those are my favorite 30 Rock and Parks & Rec episodes from the year. Hopefully Emmy voters think like me.
