Exclusive: Producer Neal Moritz on FAST FIVE, More Sequels, and the Fight Scene Between Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson

by     Posted 3 years, 291 days ago

A few days ago I sat down with producer Neal Moritz to talk about his latest movie The Green Hornet (which is a lot of fun).  Since we covered so many of his projects during the interview, I decided to break up the conversation by movie.  The other day I posted all the Total Recall news (Colin Farrell is starring, films in Toronto, not in 3D), and then yesterday I posted updates on Bryan Singer’s Jack the Giant Killer, Ryan Reynolds R.I.P.D., and Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum’s 21 Jump Street.

For tonight’s installment, I’ve got updates on Fast Five and what’s the status of additional sequels.  And for fans of Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson, Moritz revealed what went into making their fight in Fast Five (you knew they would fight each other) special. Hit the jump for more:

For fan of The Fast and Furious franchise, Moritz says Fast Five is loaded with awesome action.  He described a sequence which was teased in the trailer:

“You know the vault that gets pulled out of the—well that’s a police station that it gets pulled out of cause the bad guys have all this stuff in there and our guys pull it out of there. That sequence of 14 minutes probably, of them pulling this vault through the city of Rio De Janeiro being chased by 50 police cars throughout the city is one of the most incredible sequences I’ve ever seen on film. The action in that is like nothing you’ve ever seen, it’s all real.”

Of course great action is to be expected.  What I really wanted to know was how is the fight between Dwayne Johnson and Vin Diesel.  Moritz told me:

“They beat the shit out of each other, we shot for probably four days of them literally beating the shit out of each other. The audience is gonna be like ‘wow’.

Not content with that answer, I pressed for more.  Specifically, how did they prepare to film the scene:

“It was something that we had to conceive, obviously, then we had to work out how we’re actually gonna do the fight, then we had to bring the stunt guys in to rehearse it, then we had to bring Vin and Dwayne in to rehearse it and then we shot it and it goes up, down, through walls, through windows, it’s one hell of a fight. And it’s probably like a 5-minute fight.”

With the success of the franchise, I wanted to know if they’d already started thinking about a sixth installment. Moritz said:

“In Vin and my mind we already know what the sixth movie is, we’ve already been talking about it.  Vin and I have had numerous conversations about what that might be. And we’re starting to get serious about it right now. We just finished the movie like 4 or 5 weeks ago and we just needed a break, and now we’re gonna start focusing on that.”

Finally, when I spoke to Dwayne Johnson earlier this year, he told me that the goal was to branch off his character into his own movie.  I asked if Moritz had already started getting a script together:

“No we have not started, but we are about to.”

So if you’re a fan of the Fast and Furious franchise, it sounds like Fast Five should be a lot of fun and it’s probably not the last installment.  Here’s the full conversation with Moritz on Fast Five and beyond.   Look for the final part of my interview with Moritz tomorrow night.

Collider: I know that Fast Five got moved up, the release date.

Moritz: Yeah, the movie’s awesome

Compared to the previous films, what can fans look forward to?

Moritz: The best action you’ve ever seen in your life. There’s a sequence—you saw the teaser?

I did.

Moritz: Okay you know the vault gets pulled out of the—well that’s a police station that it gets pulled out of cause the bad guys have all this stuff in there and our guys pull it out of there. That sequence of 14 minutes probably, of them pulling this vault through the city of Rio De Janeiro being chased by 50 police cars throughout the city is one of the most incredible sequences I’ve ever seen on film. The action in that is like nothing you’ve ever seen, it’s all real.

Dwayne told me he has a fight scene between him and Vin.

Moritz: They beat the shit out of each other, we shot for probably four days of them literally beating the shit out of each other. The audience is gonna be like “wow.”

That’s the kind of scene…as an action fan you have two huge people like that fighting each other, how much did you guys set that up for filming? Obviously that’s something that fans are really looking forward to.

Moritz: It was something that we had to conceive, obviously, then we had to work out how we’re actually gonna do the fight, then we had to bring the stunt guys in to rehearse it, then we had to bring Vin and Dwayne in to rehearse it and then we shot it and it goes up, down, through walls, through windows, it’s one hell of a fight. And it’s probably like a 5-minute fight.

When Universal told you that you were getting an earlier release date, did it make you nervous or did it make you that much more excited?

Moritz: No no, this was something that we all decided together because we wanted to have kind of our own weekend. The beginning of summer keeps getting moved up, so now it’s like the first week of May, and we’re saying well the first week of summer for us is the last week in April.

Fast Five, obviously it’s gonna be a huge hit. I’m assuming Universal is already thinking, well let’s talk about a [sequel]—

Moritz: In Vin and my mind we already know what the sixth movie is, we’ve already been talking about it.

Well Dwayne told me that one of the reasons he got excited to work with you, he was saying that his character could be spun off

Moritz: Easily.

So have you already started getting a draft together?

Moritz: No we have not started, but we are about to.

With Vin and the sixth movie, have you already started brainstorming?

Moritz: Yes, Vin and I have had numerous conversations about what that might be. And we’re starting to get serious about it right now. We just finished the movie like 4 or 5 weeks ago and we just needed a break, and now we’re gonna start focusing on that.
