The R-rated comedy Neighbors was an absolute delight of 2014, and now we have our first look at a rare comedy sequel that folks are actually anticipating in Neighbors 2. Universal Pictures has unveiled the first image from the film, and it finds stars Seth Rogen and Zac Efron in a familiar position: half-naked. They’re flanked by returning stars Ike Barinholtz, Carla Gallo, and the real star of Neighbors, Rose Byrne, who turned in an absolutely scene-stealing performance in the first film.
The sequel finds the characters taking on a sorority, headed up by Chloe Grace Moretz and Selena Gomez. Bryne tells EW, which debuted the image, that with the sorority girls, “it’s like a glimpse into their daughter’s future, and it terrifies them.” Director Nicholas Stoller, whose debut Forgetting Sarah Marshall still stands as one of the best romantic comedies of the 2000s, shed some of his lengthier tendencies with Neighbors and crafted a hilarious comedy that didn’t overstay its welcome, and I’m incredibly eager to see how he progresses the characters in his first-ever sequel.
From the EW preview we know one thing for sure: there will be more spectacular party sequences as there were in the first film, with Neighbors 2 including a Mad Max-inspired tailgate and a hall-of-mirrors rave. Yes please.
