NEIGHBORS 2 Is a Go with Seth Rogen, Zac Efron, and Rose Byrne

     February 6, 2015

Director Nicholas Stoller’s comedy Neighbors was one of the funniest films of 2014, and also marked quite possibly Stoller’s tightest film yet following the somewhat bloated The Five-Year Engagement and Get Him to the Greek. Both audiences and critics alike sparked to the R-rated pic to the tune of $268.1 million worldwide, so it should come as no surprise, then, that Universal Pictures is moving forward with a sequel. Thankfully, all those involved in putting Neighbors together are returning for Neighbors 2.

neighbors-2-seth-rogen-rose-byrneUniversal announced today that Stoller is coming back to direct the follow-up, with stars Seth Rogen, Zac Efron, and the first film’s MVP Rose Byrne also poised to reprise their roles (fingers crossed Ike Barinholtz comes back as well). Obviously no plot details are known at this time, but this must have been in the works for a bit as Universal has already staked out a May 13, 2016 release date for Neighbors 2, revealing it to be the “Untitled R-Rated Comedy” that Universal plopped down on the May date a while back. Its only direct competition on that weekend at the moment is Friday the 13th reboot, but it’ll be opening one week after Marvel’s sure-to-be-huge Captain America: Civil War, which stars both Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr.

Comedy sequels are incredibly difficult to pull off so Stoller and Co. certainly have a bit of an uphill battle ahead of them, but Rogen, Efron, and Byrne were all spectacular in the first film so they’ve got a really solid foundation of chemistry to build off of. This is the first sequel in which Rogen will have a starring role, so I imagine he didn’t make the decision lightly.

Stoller will produce Neighbors 2 alongside Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and Neighbors writers Jay Cohen and Brendan O’Brien, with Stoller, Rogen, Goldberg, Cohen, and O’Brien credited as the screenwriters of the sequel.  Here’s hoping for another fight sequence to rival the first movie’s fantastic dildo fight.
