This coming Monday brings a familiar happening: the beginning of a new cycle of additions and subtractions to the Netflix library. And though I'm still a bit disappointed by Netflix's new model of pumping all money into original programming and spending very little on maintaining a catalogue of great movies, this month is not nearly as dire a situation as July was. Yes, the main attraction of the month is still an original program - Baz Luhrmann's The Get Down, about youthful African-American club culture in The Bronx circa 1980 - but there are a few big titles worth adding to your queue as soon as possible.
This would begin with No Country for Old Men, the Coen brothers' gorgeous and furious adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's exquisite Texas crime saga, in which a thieving nobody and a sheriff tangle with a killer who seems to be nothing less than evil personified. On top of that, there's Sidney Lumet's The Verdict, which features one of Paul Newman's best performances; Cornel Wilde's savage thriller The Naked Prey, about a group of white safari goers who refuse to honor an African tribe and are hunted for their insolence; and Tim Burton's wild, wonderful Sleepy Hollow, which gives a gloriously sanguine spin on the Ichabod Crane tale. For the more adventurous viewer, there's Blue is the Warmest Color, the now classic three-hour erotic romance from France, starring Spectre standout Lea Seydoux, or that movie's exact opposite: Funny or Die's uproarious, Johnny Depp-led adaptation of Donald Trump's The Art of the Deal. Check out the rest of August's additions right below.
