Another month passes, another heaping load of new films gets added to Netflix, filling in spots left by those that are being removed. As December rolls in, following Thanksgiving and amping up for Christmas, there are plenty of new titles being added, but this month seems stacked primarily with more recent, under-seen films and Netflix Originals than any other month in recent memory. The streaming service will debut a number of stand-up specials, including a brand new one from Mike Epps, but the bigger fish are The Ridiculous 6, the first of a line of Adam Sandler vehicles that the comedian will star in exclusively for the service, and original series like Bill Burr's F is for Family or Rob Schneider's Real Rob.
It will be interesting to see how those fare as the holidays roll in and less and less people feel the need to leave their homes, but there are at least two titles that you should make a point of seeing before the end of the year is out. The first is Sean Baker's kinetic comedy Tangerine, in which a transvestite prostitute, recently released from the clink, tears through Los Angeles in search of her two-timing pimp; the entire film was shot, miraculously, on an iPhone and looks impressive by any standards. This would Baker's follow-up to the equally wild Starlet, starring Dee Hemingway, and as a pair, the film's attest to a tremendous young talent who looks for technical innovation as much as inventive narratives.
The second, and far more important work, is Queen of Earth, the fourth and best feature thus far from Alex Ross Perry, one of the best American filmmakers currently working. Centering on a paranoid chamber drama between two friends, exceptionally inhabited by Elisabeth Moss and Katherine Waterston, Perry creates a work equal parts Cassavettes and Polanski, a ferocious drama tinged with sublime notes of panic and madness. It's one of the best films of the year, and for those who like making lists (as this writer does), it's an essential watch before the film year draws to a close.
